      Impossible Germany, Handshake Drugs, Spiders - Television permeates through Wilco quite a bit.

      Especially the bending with the Jazzmaster trem bar. Nels confirmed he took that effect from the conclusion of Verlaine’s solo

    This entire set was EPIC. And then to see Television open for Wilco a few years later at Solid Sound was pretty phenomenal. RIP Tom Verlaine.

    You can tell how much they love this track by the fact that they played it perfectly exactly as the original, apart the improvised solo

    I never quite realized how much Television influenced Wilco until I heard Marquee Moon (the album). You listen to "Friction," and then you can see that it's a direct ancestor of songs like "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" and "Bull Black Nova."

      Yeah I've finally got around to listening to Marquee Moon and I think you're spot on. Not that there's anything wrong with that........

      Marquee Moon (1975) is the sound of the death rattle of rock 'n roll (2000 - 2006).

      NorthWriter Me either, just watched this video of Nells Cline talk about how this song profoundly shaped who he is as a guitarist. So I listened to it and it was so obvious I can't believe I haven't noticed. I just always think of Wilco being more Folk and Bluegrass influenced with indie rock and noise tendencies. You can hear Television in a lot of what they do.

    Absolute perfection from Wilco! Better than any version of this I have heard from Television. Makes me wonder how many times they rehearsed it.

    I did my own Top 100 songs a couple of years ago and Television's version came in at #1 (Joy Division's Day of the Lords could only manage #5, go figure), i love a good cover version and now listening to this for the first time, it's fucking brilliant.
    1 - Marquee Moon/Television, 2 - Wide Open Road/The Triffids, 3 Hotel California/The Eagles, 4 - Comfortably Numb/Pink Floyd, 5 - Day Of The Lords/Joy Division, 6 - Life On Mars/David Bowie, 7 - A Forest/The Cure, 8 - King Of Vice/Ed Kuepper, 9 - Laze It Up/Swervedriver, 10 - New Born/Muse (sorry about #10...not)

      Tom Verlaine couldn't even "honor the solo".
      Every version of every song I've heard from Tom is different.

    • @joshuasummers6109
      @joshuasummers6109 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The album version was apparently the first and only take of that recording session, so it's not like an orchestrated Pink Floyd solo, it's just what he happened to play that one time. I agree with the guy who said that even TV plays it differently on every version you'll ever find. What's more faithful, the way he happened to play it that ONE time, or amorphous way that he's played it at every gig for the last 40 years?

    • @ursafan40
      @ursafan40 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Joshua Summers There is a remastered CD out with extras. Alternate takes of Marque Moon, See No Evil and Friction from the same sessions. I don't know which version of Marque Moon I like better. The solos are quite different, and they were probably recorded the same afternoon.
