This might sound weird but when you want to deep fry fries at 180C you heat the oil to 200C because when the cold fries hit the oil its temperature drops. You take the drop into account.
It would seem to me also that you should measure the temperature of the board you are trying to solder instead of the hot surface.
    Maybe I'm talking nonsense..

You're not talking nonsense. That's exactly one of the advantages of using this type of sensor on this type of device.

Makes sense. It should be best pointing the sensor to the pcb.

Silly question: how many heat / cool cycles can the copper track resistance withstand before the PCB needs to be replaced?

Good question. More cycles with leaded solder than lead free... I think this project is a fun experiment, but maybe not a durable solution..

@@bwack maybe you could modify the PCB so that the heating pad can be attached to the logic part with screw terminsls and a couple of wires.

@@bufordmaddogtannen Thats a better solution. There are someone who did that.

@@donnied8127 yes, but it would probably cost the same as this project. Also if I recall correctly these plates are mains powered. They are pretty much like a soldering iron, with a rectangular heating element.

@@donnied8127 yes, but oven, toasters and steam irons all use that rotary thermostat that opens a contact once it reaches a certain temperature.
So you would still need a temperature sensor and a micro controller to drive a ceramic heated plate decently.

Nice concept. Irritating with the "Isbilen" coming by and messing things up :)

Hehe I have to think of what this means for a moment.

@@tommyovesen There was a video long time ago that I made, where gadgetuk I think replied that it sounded like the movie The Thing. There was a haunting sound of th ewind blowing through the crack of the door. I didn't notice it until I listened to the video later.. I found it, it was TheHighlander that talked about the howling th-cam.com/video/9yg6Xw6Gdoc/w-d-xo.html Very often there is a kid screaming or insulting each other in creative ways :D or the random motorcycle buzzing by, but I'm getting new windows and it will be a lot quieter.
