Radioactive Ninja Stars - Making Glowing Metal Shurikens

  • In this video I will be making a set of aluminum bronze ninja stars resin art that glow in the dark. I designed the ninja stars in CAD (Fusion 360) and then 3d printed patterns to make a sand mold. I used an oil bonded sand called petrobond to make the mold and then went to work melting some aluminum bronze in my backyard foundry. After finishing the castings I created a glow in the dark inlay using epoxy resin and strontium aluminate powder.

    A disposable syringe works well for distributing epoxy. I use a 10ml syringe with a Luer slip tip. You need to make sure to keep the tip submerged when you are drawing it up to avoid air bubbles, but works great for dispensing precisely and avoiding drips.

      That works for a lot of projects but sometimes the plunger is not ideal. A simple Dixie cup(small paper cup) is great, fold a small spout and control the flow as you like.

    Little tip for next time!
    We use two part adhesives at my work all the time. We empty the mixture into a small plastic bag (about a dimebag size). Then we cut a small hole at the end. This dispenses the epoxy like frosting on a cake and gives you great control over the amount and location.

    If there is a red version of the glow powder, I could see this being an amazing accent to one of the Mayan style statues you made a while back. Imagine the eyes glowing long after the lights are out. Maybe also use different colors as highlights for certain parts. Man that would look cool.

    • @thany3
      @thany3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it exists. This glow powder is not "coloured" in any way. It's the chemistry in the isotopes that make it emit green light. A different colour would require a totally different material, and I have never heard of this existing. I think green is inherent to the nature of why it glows.
      Mind you, this is totally different chemistry from glowsticks, which of course does comes in all colours. But glowsticks emit their own light, and when depleted they cannot be recharged with UV light.

    @Nobe_Oddy ปีที่แล้ว +6

    WOW! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THOSE STARS!!!!!! They came out SOOOOO CLEAN and NEAT!!! You have your processes down pat! And the way the epoxy filled up the small area and made it shiny just looked so sweet with the polish reflecting the light..... and how you kept the edges a bit rough but all in the same direction..... just WOW! I'm not pullin your leg or anything, you just have such great attention to detail. I am SERIOUSLY impressed! :)
    And they are like the 'grown up' version of those glow-in-the-dark stars we all had as kids that we stuck on our bedroom ceiling.... these just stick to the ceiling is a different way lol
    I hope to see more epoxy projects like you mentioned.
    If I may, I had an idea one day a while ago. I was watching some wood working videos and I see the trend of people making tables out of a 'slice' of a tree, but the cut it in half and then put the two 'outside' edges (i think they say 'live edges') together with a gap and then fill that gap with epoxy to make make it look like a river running along the length of the table... (I'm not sure if you know what I mean just by this short description, but I am SURE you will find a bunch of videos of people doing this if you just search youtube for 'epoxy table top' or 'epoxy river table top' - that way you'll see just how beautiful this can be)....
    well now on to my idea.... instead of wood it could be two metal pieces..... but not huge dining table, maybe a small lamp table... you could make it the end goal of teaching yourself the techniques you would need, and you could document your process of learning the epoxy ins and outs (it's easy to do, but it's takes PRACTICE to make it AMAZING) and maybe you could imitate the wood with metal with the knowledge you've learned so far.....
    Now I'm not trying to sell you on my idea (although I would NEVER get to make this, I don't have the knowledge NOR the tools to do it) I just wanted to give you some inspiration. when you asked your audience about wanting to see more with the epoxy it dawned on me that you would be th eperfect person to actually do this metal table thing-a-ma-jig.... and so I figured it couldn't hurt to tell you (and everyone else on youtube lol) about it... maybe you'll you find some inspiration in it, maybe you have an aversion to epoxy rivers and metal tress 🤷‍♂lol
    I just love the idea of inspiring someone to create something just by telling them an idea I have. And there's no pressure... you don't have to leave a comment to this or think about this at all. But maybe I planted the seed that one day grows into your Magnum Opus and you become a world famous sculpture because of something I inspired you to create... And you don't even remember this convo... THAT WOULD BE SO AWESOME!!!
    Anyway... I really LOVE those stars!!! (I used to have a throwing star... but someone stole it from me... I hate people sometimes lol) I just cannot wait to see what you come up with next!!!
    THANK YOU for the vid! :D

    I recently saw a video of a guy using lost PLA to cast a gundam model kit in brass. There are probably some aircraft kits that would work with too, and might make a neat project. He was able to use the built in snap/friction binding mechanisms for the gundam but I imagine aircraft kits would require some brazing. those throwing stars are super cool btw, I 100% agree that the epoxy really meshes well with that color of metal
