  • This is my review of the Big Agnes Rapide SL Double sleeping pad. Is this the GOAT of two person backpacking sleeping pads??? In this video I go over all the specs, the pros, cons, and overall thoughts. Could this be the right pad for you? Watch and find out.

    Perfect timing - thanks! Looks like the perfect pad to make the lower bed of my Ford Nugget Plus comfy for side-sleeping, with my toddler son next to me. The tapered shape also should work great for that, since the bed is wider at the head end than at the foot end (under the kitchen). During the day, it should be easy to let about half the air out and fold it away under the kitchen. And if we ever want to sleep outdoors in the tent we take along, bingo. 😊

    Great review. Ill be getting this for me and my wife when she goes. Not too thrilled about the packdown size though lol

      Yeah that’s probably the biggest downfall for me, but worth the benefits. Just gotta split the gear up properly!

    Just got it for 240eur. It's last year's model so was cheaper and the only one actually available locally. 2024 model was 320eur from Germany so I couldn't justify the price difference for slightly more R value and few grams lighter weight. Will be a huge upgrade to our current setup.

      Managed to get it for £169 here in the UK. 👍

      @@smeghead7698 great find, I also got nemo fillo pillows and what's remaining is a warm double quilt which will probably be impossible to find for under 300eur

    Hey Justin, you got the dimensions wrong. The pad is 50"x78" and it tapers down to 40".
    I just got mine based partly on your recommendation. It's super comfy in the house. I'm looking forward to trying it this weekend with my dogs. Cheers man!

      That’s the “tent floor pad” that tapers down. The on we have is truly 40” wide throughout. It’s great sleeping on it. You’ll love it! www.backcountrygear.com/rapide-sl-insulated-pad-double-wide/?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwmMayBhDuARIsAM9HM8fVJDX0lLhZ66GRg8JO9vFpDHMYRS7dSMFfjmglCCi0GmBFfe71w9saAvH5EALw_wcB

    I have it on order! It’s a tapered pad so it’s 50inch on top and tapers to 40. That’s why it feels bigger then two 20”

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I believe that is the “floor pad”. This one in the video is actually a rectangle. 40 inches with no taper. Same pad just different shape.

    Hey man - I have a quick question about this pad (and maybe double pads in general..) Do you find that when one partner rolls or tosses then the other partner sort of "bounces" as air gets shifted around? Sort of like on a bouncy castle? We used to use a cheap double pad for car camping, and found this to be the case. It's actually because of this experience that we prefer to go with two separate pads strapped together for backpacking. I'm wondering if that was just the effect of the poorer quality Intec air mattress that we were car camping with, and maybe the better quality backpacking pads don't actually have the same effect?

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s there, but BARELY, with this pad. If we’re both on the pad I don’t notice it at all. Only time I even slightly notice it is if one person completely gets up or lays down really hard. Even then it’s not bad. Don’t notice any bounce when tossing and turning. I’ve had that experience with those big air mattresses for car camping… somehow this backpacking pad does a much better job eliminating that. That quilted baffling does its job! I much prefer this over 2 separate pads.

    From a width perspective, how does this feel compared to 2x 25" pads? even though the double is 10" smaller, does it still feel similarly spacious and not cramped when you're both lying down?

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      From my experience yes, I think it’s similar to two wide pads. You can both be more centered on the pad since neither person has an extra edge to be cautious of… if that makes any sense? However, my girlfriend and I are pretty cuddly, so maybe I’m biased. If you plan on laying side by side without contact all night, it would probably feel cramped.

    Hey Justin, just confirming that your pad is the new 2024 version? I've read that the new 2024 Big Agnes Rapide SL insulated pads suffers the same issues as its predecessor the Zoom UL with the reflective material falling to the bottom and the insulation being in fact defective and sleeps cooler than the stated 4.8 R-value, just wondering if you've had this issue or noticed it with this pad? Blessings.

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is the 2024 version. On top of prior use, we’re now over a month into the PCT with it and the insulation is doing fine. Coldest morning was 28 degrees but slept plenty warm on it. Cheers!

      @@justinhitsthetrail5225 That’s really encouraging to know that this is the pad you chose to take out on the PCT and that you’re sleeping comfortably and warm with it. It gives me hope in this pad. Will wait for a sale here in Australia and see how we go. Thank you for your reply. Have a grand time out there! Blessings, Vu

    Hi Justin ... how would you rate is noise level when moving / rolling over during sleep. Insulation noise on my Sea to Summit Etherlight Insulated is really excessive - looking for a much quieter option. Thx

    • @justinhitsthetrail5225
      @justinhitsthetrail5225  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’d say it’s moderate. The insulation is suspended so there’s no crinkly noise from that. It’s just the noise of rolling around on a synthetic fabric.
