I had one of these from 2011 until 2014, and this had to be one of the most rock solid, and enjoyable computers I’ve ever used. Ran Windows 7 without a single issue.
The D620 is second best laptop I've owned. I got a Core Solo model in 2012, with 1gb of ram and a 40gb hard drive. It's been upgraded to 4gb of ram, a 500gb hard drive, T7200 and swapped on a 1440x900 screen. All that gone wrong was an intermittent issue with it refusing to even Post. I was lucky enough to buy a beaten one for £10 at a sale, which donated its motherboard. My thinkpad t22 is the best laptop I've owned. Never gone wrong in the 15 years it's been with us. Yeah, I've got a much more powerful gaming laptop now, but it really isn't the same, and I doubt it'll last as long.
I actually still have an old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that I bought from the flea market a few years ago for like $2. It's even older than your laptop, according to its BIOS date, it shows January 11th, 2005. It has a 1.5ghz single core Pentium M cpu with 1.5 gb of ram and 100 gb hard drive. I still have it in Windows XP. I think the guy at the flea market was gonna throw it out so he sold it for parts. I'm thinking in terms of performance, it might be equivalent to a high performance laptop from 2002 or 2003.
The Latitude D620 was, arguably, one of the very first laptops that I saw and used. Our family didn't get our first laptop until 2011 (a 13" MacBook Pro), and a family friend owned one of these, and in all honesty, may still own it. Whenever we went on trips and they were with us, I would always ask to use it (you know, watch TH-cam, play Flash games, whatever 7 year old me wanted to do), and it was probably one of my first experiences using a portable computer ever. I'd love to own one some day, partially because it would make a pretty lit XP machine, since you can actually get a floppy drive for these (goes into the optical drive bay) pretty cheap.
They're all over eBay for under $100. I have fond memories of the D620 in a school environment...every middle school I went to, the teacher had one. One of the best machines Dell has made to date imo

Unfortunately, living in Canada and all that, shipping sometimes costs more than the machine itself, and sellers that refuse to ship here from the US really slim the selection down. Oddly, none of the schools I went to used Dell products (only now my University uses exclusively Dell), it was all Acer. I do agree though, this design is absolutely timeless, a testament to just how well-built these machines are, even though it might look a little dated with all the switches and flickering lights (which I actually like); function over form.
When I went to the E-Waste bin with the robotics club at my school, I found a Dell Latitude D610 but I didn’t take it since it was going to recycle center & everyone in the robotics club at the school was told not to break any of the technology in the E-Waste bin even if that technology is basically worthless because that technology is not our technology but if we broke that technology, we would have to pay for it even though that technology is worthless
I still have one. Worked pretty well until last year for office work and used it as a terminal for my phone using scrcpy. Screen is pretty worn out so it's sitting in a box until I get a new one.
i've got the unofficial xp service pack 4 installed on mine, with an upgraded processor and its turned into a great travel laptop for me cause my others are a bit clunky in comparison
I'm planning to get one of these after my exams have finished and I have decided to install Windows XP on this laptop after i bought it, if it doesn't come with XP pre-installed. I will install the Mypal and Supermium browsers as Windows XP and Vista no longer have mainstream browser support. Also I'll install Panda Dome Antivirus, 7-Zip, VLC media player 3, IrfanView, EaseUS Partition Master, Total Commander and I'll also install XP-era games on a USB flash drive so that I'll plug it in my laptop and play those games.
I have one of those! Found it in our basement.. it still works! And I found a computer game and it plays it without any problems, im gonna get a copy of doom and play it on this laptop! 😂
At 6:25 you may not be able to but with my d630 running makululinux its performing way better than win10 that am running on a next laptop. so it's a daily driver for me without any issues.
I had one of those laptops before. Although generation-wise, I prefer the Lenovo ThinkPad T60. D620s when it comes to dedicated video cards had one of the defective G84/86-based NVIDIA Quadro chips, in one of which is the NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M chip that was included on those laptops as a dedicated video card option.
This was my first computer got it for free when my school was throwing them away used it till 2018 when it was disposed of my parents without telling me, real shake was a good machine
My dell D630, he runs, okay, I guess, was well cared for before I took him essentially off of a garbage pile back in 2017, but seemingly nothing modern will perform very well; even tried latest Ubuntu, and even that lagged. I would rather not put XP back on him due to security issues. Watching this video reminded me of that little project. Suggestions?

There is. You can add a Bluetooth module to the inside of this laptop. It's even got a fancy blue light to show off to other people that you chose the Bluetooth upgrade.
I current have one of these but something's wrong. The power comes on, but two of the lock symbols in the upper left-hand corner (A and ⬇) flash for about a minute then it just shuts off. And it's not heating up at all. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this problem? I have important files and family pics on it, that can't be replaced.

Slap an SSD on that, 4GB of RAM, and perhaps a Core 2 Duo. Then you'll have a computer that's usable for Windows 10. Perfect for a kid's first computer. It's better than what you'll find in an el cheapo laptop at Walmart, in every way. But personally, if I'm gonna get an XP machine, I'd fetch one of these. Since you can easily find parts for it. Especially that SATA drive.
Can it instal Linux?? Mine is an old work laptop w/ windows 7 professional passed down by my pops. I want to bypass the administrator & install Linux making it my personal for hooligan stuff.

Then restart. (I THINK IT'S F10 to get into the boot selection) you can then, try the image or install. It's much more simple now than it was 14 years ago.

This is kinda making me regret sending my old D620 to the recycler. It had a few issues though, so it isn't too big of a deal.

Mine runs 7 pretty well; it's a little sluggish here and there but not unusable. I'm considering throwing a cheap SSD in it, that ought to help

Already has 4GB RAM lol. I'll probably pick up another one of those $20 Kingston SSDs for it at some point in the future
I personally prefer Linux on machines with 4GB of RAM. Windows 10 on 4GB of RAM won't deliver the best performance, but it should work nonetheless.

I ran Ubuntu flawlessly on it in 2007 with compiz fusion.
