There's a recent article from Mark Rosewater where he explains that at a certain point when he was working on Time Spiral block he considered making Instant a supertype, so that one could have Instant Sorceries (Instants) and Instant Creatutes (creatures with Flash). At the end, it was not possible to implement such a radical change and they introduced the Flash mechanics instead .
I actually pulled a foil veil of summer years ago, had no idea it was good, and threw it in bulk. I spent hours finding it after realizing the foil is like 50 bucks, just a funny story.
@@hiddenleaf414 Well it's from Core Set 2020, and as you surely know the core sets are numbered for the upcoming year so M20 came out in July of 2019. The point still stands, it could not have been years (plural) ago.
And I'm sorry I love the card for mono blue decks. It's almost a necessity for spikey play groups. I tend to build for 7-9 so I feel that you should always be prepared to see it in that power range.

I'm sure you guys already realized this but just in case: Deflecting Swat can also be used to counter counter spells by changing the target of the counter spell to Deflecting Swat itself, and because DS resolves first when the counter spell resolves it no longer has a legal target and just fizzles.
wow, you guys really really like veil of summer. better than cylconic rift or assassin's trophy? you must have alot of counterspells flying around in your games.
Some more great ones are Rebuff the Wicked in white nonblue decks (was $5, but it’s getting reprinted in TSR!) white, Volcanic Offering hits 4 targets (and when it gets down to 1v1, it’s 4 of their things!)
I agree with Joe that Deflecting Swat "looks so bad" at first. I totally undervalued it at first, comparing it to other red "deflect" spells from my Standard-playing days (Ricochet Trap and the like). But, yeah, it's now an auto-include in more of my red decks. Also, if I Deflecting Swat your extra turn spell, you can't even get salty about it.:)
deflecting swat is one of my favorite cards even in my cedh deck, I just cast it for nothing and change a counterspell to it sow when it resolves it has no target. or my opponent is casting peer into the abyss and I just change the target to myself and win instead of him. and also in my cedh kess intuition is a one-card combo, you have kess on the battlefield you cast intuition you take Thassa's oracle, Reanimate and demonic consultation. doesn't matter what you get, you will get a Thassa's oracle etb and in response demonic consultation your deck.
