    Fun fact: Kokusho is one of very few legends that was nerfed by the changing of the legend rule. There was a janky deck that would get all 4 copies in the graveyard, then animate them all at once for the game.

    I am convinced that Shivan Dragon got into that spot due to the untold amount of lotuses and moxen used to trade for it back in the day.

    This got me wondering what the most expensive tribes are, on average. That might make a good list for a future video, since you can also talk about how the list would change if you didn't count certain outliers or tribes with less than a certain number of creatures

    Bit of an aside, but Shivan Dragon will always stand as the example of why the reserved list is a joke. Despite literally dozens of reprints, the original still holds insane value. Not because it is good. Not because it is even playable, but because people will always want originals and they could reprint literally every card on the reserved list with only minimal impact to the original card prices. They have done it. It happened. Yet, investors will swear to the opposite, in complete opposition to reality as many simply want to sit on their pile of cardboard treasure like, well, a dragon on its hoard while players have to proxy to get the cards.

    • @AidanWR
      @AidanWR ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Same with Birds of Paradise, and that's a reprint that is sought after. The reprints range anywhere from 6 dollars to 10 dollars, with a hundred dollar and 25 dollar reprint, but the original is still well over 3k dollars. There are so many cards from that time that aren't widely played that I wanted to put in a deck, but the price for them is abysmal

    • @filipkevely
      @filipkevely ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I guess it makes sense but after witnessing the growing intricacies of complex systems in all walks of life recently: I'm not 100% sure that's how it would pan out (though I lean to "yes").

    • @Greg_Ulmer

      The revised duals would definitely go down, probably significantly, if they reprinted them.

    • @jamesgasik3424
      @jamesgasik3424 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I have never understood how reprinting a card affects it's "collectibility". I mean look at comics or baseball cards; key comics and cards have been reprinted dozens of times, and this does nothing to affect the rarity or value of the original. And even if you reprint a reserved list card, some whales will still want the original for the bling factor. And many cards on the reserved list, no one really wants, so I can't see how reprinting them would matter at all; it basically comes down to a small amount of very rare, very powerful cards that have their price inflated for a reason entirely unrelated to their collectible status- their value as game pieces.

    • @wuschelbeutel
      @wuschelbeutel ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Rarity & age are only part of the equation. Playabiliy is another key driver of demand. Karakas would be way more expensive if it were on the reserved list. Also, Shivan Dragon was iconic - especially the original, which is another factor that doesn't equally apply to other cards.

    Teeka's Dragon isn't gonna be on this list, because despite being on the Reserve List, WOTC knew everyone would play it, so that's why they printed 100 quadrillion copies.

    Worth noting Zodiac Dragon has Oracle rules text specifying that it only works if put into your graveyard FROM THE BATTLEFIELD. I'm not sure if this is errata or if technically the dragon always worked that way due to the Portal Three Kingdoms rules being a little odd, but either way if it wasn't the case then the card would be super broken (essentially functioning as a one card infinite discard engine)

    The Shivan Dragon is that much because there were only 1020 of the Alpha version printed. It was thought that 1100 Alpha sets were printed but later on found out to be less. However that being said, the video creator said that he was going of NM pricing. A MP/LP Alpha Shivan dragon goes for 4500-6000 these days. As for the Dragon Whelp, $190-450.
    I thought for sure the OP was going to say the Shichifukujin Dragon for number 1 slot.

    Slight good update to the list as of this date
    Balefire dragon got a reprint in commander masters 2023 and is around 10 dollars.
    Skithirix got a reprint in March of the machine and is around 5 dollars and is officially a Phyrexian.
    You can easily find the ur dragon for under 20 dollars now since it finally got a reprint in commander masters 2023.
    With the legends Nicol bolas in his original art is expensive but he has been reprinted and not sure why but I can find the other 2 in there original for less them 20.
    Shivan dragon and dragon whelp are only expensive in there original art and have been reprinted lots of times.
    Not surprisingly a lot of these got much need reprints in commander masters and in 2023 sets in general.

    Good list, but I find it a little inconsistent in its form. YES Shivan Dragon is around 10k for alpha, but its also 49cents for the M10 version. The Elder Dragons get a special page in my binder where it is the 5 original arts of them surounding 4 Torchlings that the artist drew a dragons skull with silver sharpie in a way that u only get the full picture with all 4 copies arranged 2 by 2. N on the back side of that page is the new art Nicol along with other legendary dragons that I'm not currently using. Oh ya, btw, that is the 1st page in the binder, next r foils n then planeswalkers n then other cards all in defending rarity n then tokens at the end.

    I'm sorry, but I have a Shivan Dragon in my $10 budget EDH deck. There is no world in which anyone would say it is an expensive card. Yes, it may have had an expensive PRINTING, but that doesn't make it an expensive CARD. Either take an average of all the printings (probably best to more heavily weight more recent printings too, as these affect overall price more) or just take the cheapest or most recent printing. This system of including the most expensive printing gives a totally false representation of the real, average price of cards to a real player. At worst, at least rename this series to "Most Expensive [Type] Printings".

      @@TreeCutterDoug It doesn't mean it costs more than 10c to acquire, if you do just want "a Shivan Dragon", though. Every card has more expensive PRINTINGS, but that doesn't make them expensive CARDS. Imagine telling people basics are stupidly expensive cards because the Guru lands exist. It's just not true as an overall statement, so is misrepresentative here too to show the most expensive printings rather than a weighted average that gives more importance to recent sets that affect the market price more.
