  • SAFETY FIRST when it comes to these experiments. This is a fun experiment you can do at home with just some flammable tea bags.

    We use to do that with newspapers by twisting the four ends together to form a balloon shape. Then light the twisted ends and watch it float away. It works bests on cool nights. It's a major fire hazard but we weren't worried about that as kids.

    I've known this as a joke (a Belgian joke, for those who are familiar with the questionable French tradition of mocking the Belgians because they have a funny accent): sitting at industry booth during an international aerospace conference is an engineer guy showcasing a teabag on an upended drinking glass.
    A visitor enquires why the guy is showcasing a teabag at an aerospace conference and the guy corrects him: "it's not a teabag, it's a rocket - a Belgian rocket".
    The visitor then asks why the rocket has a label. The engineer replies that it's the price tag. The visitor replies that rockets generally don't come with a price tag. So the engineer removes the tag.
    Then the visitor asks about the thread. The engineer says it's the fuse, to ignite the engine. The visitor exclaims that rockets have built-in ignition and don't need a fuse. Thus the engineer removes the thread.
    Then the visitor asks about the staple (which previously held the thread). The engineer says it's the handlebar, to drive the rocket. The visitor scoffs, saying that rockets don't have human pilots and thus don't need a handlebar or a yoke or a sidestick. The engineer thus removes the staple.
    Then the visitor asks about the tea leaves inside the bag. The engineer says it's the gunpowder to power the rocket. The visitor says that state-of-the-art launchers don't use gunpowder anymore, but liquid propellant. Therefore the engineer empties the teabag and stands it up on its launchpad (the upside-down glass).
    The visitor mocks the whole exhibit, saying this thing can't possibly be a rocket and that it certainly can't fly.
    The engineer protests that it can indeed fly.
    The he lights the top of the bag, and the rest is Diana's video.

    • @Pyriphlegeton
      @Pyriphlegeton ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, plastic ones do. I don't think paper ones do. Also that's not really a reasonable concern when burning them. Burning paper already produces carcinogenic smoke so...I wouldn't be worried about breathing microplastics.

      @@Pyriphlegeton depends on the brand. It can be hard to tell which do and which don't. You can test the tea bag by burning the edge of the bag with a lighter, if it melts it's plastic. They can shed billions of microplastic and nanoplastic particles.
