    Tofugu asks Japan about honne and tatemae, that is true feelings vs. outward feelings. What are ways to find out Japan's true feelings and innermost secrets? Is this trait unique to Japanese people? (The answer to both is no, btw)

    I worked with Japanese & Koreans and learned while you never know how you stood with the Japanese (tatemate), you knew straight up how you stood with the Koreans. They are direct & to the point, no caring for how it sounds or effects you!!

      There's nothing wrong with not knowing something, nor is it wrong to ask, but in an interview setting, on tv (which i was referring to) it's best to do some research before you ask questions! That way you are getting the most out of an interview. :)

    If foreigners had even the slightest spirit of diversity, they would consider why honne and tatemae are so ingrained in Japanese society, but unfortunately many of them are more concerned with criticizing Japan for the purpose of gaining a sense of superiority.

I think it's something that comes out naturally when politeness and strategies for avoiding offence are valued in a culture. Great answers "Japanさん".

    It reminds me of what the Portuguese missionary João Rodrigues "Tzuçu" said about them, when Europeans first met them:
    "They are so crafty in their hearts that nobody can understand them. Whence it is said that they have three hearts: a false one in their mouths for all the world to see, another within their breasts only for their friends, and the third in the depths of their hearts, reserved for themselves alone and never manifested to anybody. As a result all other decays here for everyone acts merely according to the present moment and speaks according to the circumstances and occasion. But they do not use this double dealing to cheat people in business matters, as do the Chinese in their transactions and thieving, for in this respect the Japanese are more exact; but they reserve their treachery for affairs of diplomacy and war in order not to be deceived themselves. And in particular when they wish to kill a person by treachery (a stratagem often employed to avoid many deaths), they put on a great pretence by entertaining him with every sign of love and joy - and then in the middle of it all, off comes his head".
    João Rodrigues

    I think the best English equivalent to Tatemae would be Tact. At least, that's my understanding of the concept where you're just being polite to the other person because you think your actual opinion is rude or hurtful.

    Guy: Welcome back again Japan
    Girl (Japan): Are you crazy? (When she said that, I started laughing {though it's scripted, but still funny}, especially from their first interview)
    Then Ironically they jump in and cover the difference between Honne and Tatemae :)

    Perhaps that is one of the reasons why there are fewer Christians in Japan than in South Korea, the Philippines, and Singapore despite the efforts that missionaries have made in Japan for hundreds of years. In Japan I imagine that the Christians there must have a more difficult life than normal because of the concept of honne and tatemae. In the Bible we see that God and the Lord Jesus used the honne concept 100%. There is no example of Them using tatemae on anyone. They never hid their ways of thinking nor their intentions regardless of whether someone was offended or confused or not. Jesus was crucified because His way of thinking was 100% honne. Biblical teachings promote honne and not tatemae. Also related to this, it promotes individualism more than collectivism or the group. The Japanese see these biblical philosophies very foreign to their way of thinking.

    Honne Tatemae is a good thing. Being rude and saying the cookies are bad is the wrong thing to do as it is inconsiderate of the other persons feelings. In order to be a kinder person one must always consider the feelings of others before themselves. This is the core believe of Japan as a nation and what makes them so beautiful and yes there are many many times where they are telling the truth both good and bad. However because their culture is about always considering the needs of others before themselves they are almost always good because it is so deeply ingrained into the culture and it molds them to be kinder and gentler human beings.

    • @illegalalien6542
      @illegalalien6542 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wrong.The very concept of Tatemae is outdated and incompatible with the modern world. A remnant of bygone medieval Japan. A cruel truth is always better than a genuine lie

  • @ZarlanTheGreen
    @ZarlanTheGreen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The usual answer to "do I look fat in this?", is an example of tatemae. (mine'd be pure honne. If you don't want my opinion, don't ask for it)
    I don't know that I have a lot of tatemae, if any.
    I may not always show all everything of myself, all the sides of my personality (not that you can, really) and I may keep some things unsaid or even, though rarely, secret
    ...but I don't lie. Ever.
    I might lie if, say, I'm at gunpoint or something ...but the things that are usually referred to as "white lies", are not white at all, IMO.
    If you give me a present I don't like, I'll truthfully say I appreciate it, as I appreciate the gesture and the thought/intent behind it. I won't say I like it, though.
    Depending on the situation/person, I might also mention that I actually don't like it.

    Somehow, I hate Tatemae.
    Because when I made a delicious cake for a girl, if she did want to eat or that cake is マズイ. She does need to say “it is delicious”. She can say “it is fine”, “it is OK”.
    If she said “delicious “. I would think so and next time, next time and forever, I will make that cake again. But that girl will avoid to meet me. At that time, I don’t know what happened, what I did wrong. Maybe, I did “Sex Harassment”, that’s why she doesn’t want to meet me again. While the true reason is my まずい cake.
    This is a simple example. The hurt example is: You love a girl, and she told you, you are the best person in this world, (but she never want to talk and see you again).
    That is Tatemae of Japan culture.
