I have yet to get to the body on the Saven, so I really would LOVE your feedback on the waist shaping details! If you have noticed the funny gaps in the graphics, I just realized that I had accidentally exported this video with one of the channels turned off. That’s where all of the project info pages are, as well as a few other details like IG handles. If you are looking for any missing info in particular, please comment and I will get back to you ASAP! Sorry about that!! Thank you! Happy Saturday, y’all! 💛
Based on pictures of your dad’s last sweater, I would vote for the boxy construction. I think it would be more comfortable for him, if he doesn't like things fitted.
@@akaNoraKnits I would personally leave out the shaping to be on the safer side. Especially if your dad isn't super athletic and just like any other normal guy, I think the boxy style would fit better. I think most men's sweaters are just straight?
I would take into account the hips versus chest circumference (since I guess your dad sweater won't be cropped ^^). Men tend to have thinner hips compared to their chest. I know that if I don't incorporate some waist shaping for my
17:45 I don’t save my yarn labels but I do save all the tails I snip off after weaving in the ends. At the end of the year I stuff all the saved yarn tails into one of those clear ornament balls and use stickers to add the year! It’s a fun way to remember the projects I did each year while decorating my tree 😊
Oooo new shadow box idea! Take one label from the project (or one of each if different was used) and write the pattern name on there and what was used and dates completed etc and put it in there with some cute fun number label stickers for each year creating time capsules of your journey
YOU NEED THE DRESS! (Spoken as the person also knitting the Grayling into a dress lol) I was at Anthropologie this week trying on knit maxi dresses and it inspired me to eagerly finish this beauty 😊 I don’t think it’s necessary to see your needles for “try it on tubing and chat.” It is evident that you put a tremendous amount of thought and care into your framing and recording. I think that comment came from a new viewer who doesn’t understand the segment yet… once they get a couple episodes watched, they will get the purpose of the segment they will understand what you’re doing IMHO
You’re so kind-thank you! I have seen the same things in Anthro and I feel like we could drop the grayling dress into the showroom and it would fit right in!! Let’s do it!
I appreciate that you want to make others happy when watching, but unless you get several comments about something I wouldn't change a whole setup for 1 person. You will never please everyone and drive yourself nuts trying. You are so thoughtful though ❣️
What I absolutely love about you Nora, is that your process is so relatable. I recently accepted that I just, love, knitting. I don't really care what I make, and the reason I relate to you is that you assess your knits as they relate to your process and your whims and your wardrobe desires. I love it, and I love your channel.
I watch Jen Geigley’s TH-cam knitting videos. She saves her yarn labels each year and uses them to make an “annual” paper chain. Also, you can stuff clear plastic Christmas tree bulbs with your colorful yarn scraps and hang them on your tree or wherever. 😊
Unless Dad has a V figure and a flat tummy, I’d do the roomier tummy fit. But you can also make your decision by looking at his waist and chest measurements for a more educated guess. It’s coming along beautifully. He’s going to love it!
I think that the idea of saving your yarn labels is so special! You could get a scrapbooking hole punch in a cute shape like a heart or star and punch a shape out of each label. Then you could put the little shape into the shadow box as an homage to all of your projects in a similar vein to what you have now! (But hopefully more sustainable over time without the bulk issue)
Your Grayling is beautiful on you! From my afar position, listening to you it feels pretty clear you want it to be a dress haha. So just popping in a reminder that, especially if that deadline is feeling stressful and the amount of knitting you want to do is daunting, you're allowed to put it on hold and work on something else! You can even make it next year's holiday dress and have a great headstart on it lol.
I think your dream knit will be beautiful as a dress! I hope you go for your original plan. I agree with other comments here that a boxier knit for your Dad's sweater will probably be a better fit for an older gentleman. I really enjoy seeing what you are knitting and the thoughts that go into your decisions for projects.
Definitely make it the full dress! If you just make it a sweater, you will have a bunch of yarn left over that will become yet another sweater in that same color which was already a concern for you 😊
Never stop making your epic knits! They might be impractical for daily life, but I find them so inspiring! They are works of art and I just love how your channel celebrates such creativity
I saw Jen Geigley made a paper chain with all her yarn labels from the year. I'd love to see you make the dress (there's always another event, no need to pressure yourself to finish for a specific one), but don't let us pressure you - though it does feel like you're leaning that way 😁
For your labels...a notebook/journal. One lable from the project (unless using multiple yarn then one for each yarn used) keep for stats and info. Also potentially a baggie with some of the leftover yarn for possible repairs.
I love the memory box! It means something to you so I would keep it. I think your sweater dress should be knee length. It would look adorable on you! You always have great ideas!
I would definitely go with the grayling dress. As you say you have other sweaters that colour and I think a maxi cabled dress would be super cute with boots and it can be either dressed up or down.
As far as the yarn labels go…I keep a hard copy of the pattern in a binder, as well as maintain a separate project book. I save a yarn label for each, along with a small piece of the yarn attached. I don’t know why I do both, but I do!!
I keep one label from each type of yarn I use for a project. I try to maintain a project journal, and I put the label for the yarn on the page with the corresponding project!
I’m not normally a monogamous knitter and I definitely have a decent amount of lingering wips in the “naughty corner” but I have been solely knitting on my new tessellated vest for about a week and its slow going but im loving it!!
I saw someone (Jen Geiger?) make a paper chain with all her yarn labels for the year! So fun. I’ve previously been a trashed, but may make the chain this year! ⛓️
I love the shadow box! I might have to get one myself. Maybe you could do a video reviewing the yarn you used over the last year, what projects you made with them, and if you’d use them again. Maybe even make theirs and rank them. I’m always looking for new yarn to try 😊❤
I keep a single Yarn-Label per project. I make notes about the project on it and attach a piece of yarn (I punch a hole) to it. Keeping all would take up to much space and get really messy 😂
Hi Nora, agree with previous commenters - no need to show more of your try on tubing method - editing is one of your strongest talents and the effort is obvious and truly appreciated. I laughed at your yarn labels - I did exactly the same thing in a box for the whole of 2024 thinking that I could do something cool and arty but ended up looking at the massive pile of paper and thinking what did I do that for? Saw the comment on the paper chain, like the idea of that but not sure it would look any good on display. So I’ll be watching to see if you end up doing something interesting with yours, mine left me stumped. Finally, I think you talked yourself into the dress decision during the episode - I can’t see it any other way than how you describe how you’re going to wear it and how it will make you feel. HNY and happy knitting! See you next week. X
What a lovely comment-thank you!! That really means a lot! lol I’ll keep brainstorming on ideas for the labels and maybe we’ll come up with something! I totally agree about the dress. I love having this opportunity to sit and really talk through all of my thoughts on a piece. If it weren’t for the podcast, I may have cut the grayling short! But it deserves to be a dress. It’ll get done when it does. Happy knitting!!
In terms of your yarn labels, what about just saving one label per yarn used per project? That way you have a running inventory of what wool you've used in the past without collecting all the labels used. Just a thought.
Maybe just save one ball band of each type of yarn used in each project to reduce the volume but keep a momento from each? You could eventually collage them all onto a huge canvas. That would be pretty cool.
Happy new year, Nora! Thank you for this video. I very much enjoyed my knitting time with you. I'm keeping a notebook for my knitting projects, where I glue in a foto of the finished object, the yarn lable and add any information I think is worth noting. Maybe I'll start glueing in a scrap of the yarn as well. By the way: my first finished object of 2025 is a My Jose Hood. Thank you for letting me know about this pattern. Now I know what you meant by it being more work than you thought at first ;-) Best wishes, Juliane.
Definitely go for the dress. It will be stunning! I vote for the simpler neckline rather than a turtleneck. Better for showing off your lovely neck and jewelry.
I would keep going on the long cable dress. I would wear it all the time with sneakers with my hair in a ponytail or messy bun. I have been thinking of making one since I heard about your vision.
Save one lable on your project page. Or make a paper chain for your craft room. Sleeves are one-third of a project, so in 2 weeks you have gotten 1/3 done That's very close so you should totally meet you deadline.
Listening to you talk about the man’s sweater makes me think I should be knitting men’s patterns 😂. I have broad shoulders and narrow hips and I hate dropped shoulders and massive amounts of ease in sweaters. I also have a large bust though 🤔 Hmmmm.
That made me laugh - keeping ALL the labels! I keep one from each for my project journal - a little book with all my notes. I haven’t taken to recording my knits on Ravelry. I do keep all my small yarn balls in large Kilner jars and they really look super and make me smile. Please keep going and knit a dress…❤
I photograph my yarn labels front and back and post them on the Stash page and also on the Project page for each corresponding project. Then I throw them out. If you want to get creative with your label bands, how about fold the decorative lyrics and make a decorative chain? And/or do origami. Have fun!
I remember watching a video a while back about someone who had used a lamp that had a vase like base and filled it with little toys and things of her childs that she had found in their pockets before doing laundry. Maybe something like this? I love that knitting can be so much more than just making things ❤😊
I generally only keep my yarn labels for a year so at the end of the year I can reflect visually on how much I knit. I track balls of yarn and yardage and weight as well but its fun to see that representation of how many balls of yarn I knit through in the past year. Then I start over.
Idea: Hmmm what about paper quilling with the paper labels and make a design /art with it? But I do just recycle the paper labels personally at this time
The grayling looks like an amazing fit on you! I don’t think you can go wrong with following your vision to make it into a dress. I’m so incredibly impressed with the cables on that saven sweater! I’ve been doing some cables for a blanket and totally messed them up at one point and it’s just a small strip 😂 I’ve been doing a lot of cables lately (and I’ve knit a lot of cable projects in the past) but I still can get turned around and mess up so easily 😵💫🫠 I’ve been focusing on finishing my Cinema sweater. It’s a long story behind that sweater, but I was inspired by how much you knit in a year and decided to try and focus my energy on finishing at least something for me. I usually have looots of WIPs and take ages to finish anything.
Getting rid of sleeve island first is a great idea. There’s a book you can pick up so cheaply online called knitting and tea that has a great cable in it. I looked at the book on ravelry which was helpful. I was thinking can you take your cue from the sweater you have already made for your dad or ask him what he would prefer.
Thank you again for your podcast! I got so excited when I remembered I could make teas and watch it! You asked so many questions I have thoughts on!; I say take extensive notes and put your dress on hold until next year when fall starts and then you have its full vision in full excitement you can wear it for thanksgiving and Christmas Ect. I know people have big feelings about putting things on hold but I highly recommend it- I was working on a Moby for my 5 year old and summer was coming up and when I finished the body and I was dreading finishing the project so I put it on hold until fall began to dawn and it was incredibly satisfying to have the instant gratification of just knitting the arms and having a finished garment! I hugely enjoyed then entire process of making it and unlike other people who have hated the slog of the Moby I cannot wait to make another! 2)what to do with your yarn labels- I have a couple ideas that go in tandem with your shadow box- use one of those light bulb safety pins to attach one of the labels from each project to the swatch or the extra ball from the project(too small for another project) and when the shadow box gets full of swatches transfer it to a binder with those clear sheet protectors with the project name or the gauge you got with the needle size you used especially for stockinette projects (I use paper patterns so I put mine in there with all that info) that way you have 2024 binder and you can find the yarn you used for x project if you want to use it for another and you can canibalize your swatch if you need to make repairs or mend something years later and the shadow box will look so cute with the swatches or balls of extra yarn in it. 3) I wouldn’t do the waist shaping for your dad sweater I feel like it will make it feel like he can only wear it with certain pants but if its a bit boxier he could dress it up or just throw it on
I would stick with the dress for your grayling sweater, but not worry at all about a deadline. I would focus all your time on your dad's sweater and I think it's wonderful that the sleeves are almost done. I do think the front and back will go by quickly. I would probably just stick with the pattern as written as long as you think there is enough positive ease for your father's shape. I'm sure he's used to a standard men's fit and I know his previous sweater looked great on him. I hope you have lots of time for knitting this week! ❤🧶
I store the yarn labels and than paste them to a notebook with a piece of the yarn I used for the project. It's good to have samples of the yarn in case we want something like that again. It's our own catalogue. I also save yarn bits to fill plushies
I have a notebook where I note down things that I cannot put into my Ravelry notes (paid pattern details etc.) and I also glue the labels there. If I ever need to repair or remake anything, I want to know the brand, yarn, color, dye lots, etc.
Jen geigley makes a paper chain with her yarn bands lol I keep mine in a bag currently and not sure what I'm going to do with them. I do keep yarn bits in a reused large!! Glass vase. It's actually really pretty. I have another one with lil ball scraps in it.
The Saven definitely looks very impressive! I think for your dad I would not do the waist shaping. I am working on a few projects. One of them is a chocolate brown Yoga Winter Sweater that I am absolutely in love with so far. It is 100% inspired by you. I would never have considered this knit if it wasn't for you 😊
I keep one or two labels from each project with a bit of yarn attached to it. I then place it in an old photo album with see through sleeves. And Voila! I can easily see what I've used.
Nora, your dad is excited about the sweater because the first one was so fabulous. Men his age don't spend money on upmarket clothing. I am sure he feels the same way about your sweater as you or I would feel about a Chanel jacket.
Happy new knitting year, everybody. Congratulations, Nora, for keeping up the passion and the energy to share it with the knitter world. Best regards from a Finnish knitter.
Definitely no tapering on the sweater, it will look weird. Don’t feel bad about throwing labels in your project bag, I have a bunch in mine too plus random stray yarn ends lol.
Hi! As I was trying to get to sleep last night I thought oh it’s Saturday tomorrow… and yay Nora will have a new video 😂 of course then I was excited and couldn’t sleep 😅 lol I have been knitting/crocheting for 5 years as of about a week or so ago and I have kept ALL my ball bands! I have them in a couple shoe boxes, I kept them so I could go back and see what yarn I used and what the content was and how to care for them. Also to kind of see what I’ve used. Your Grayling is looking great ❤ at first I thought, make it a sweater, but after you tried it on I thought no make it a dress 😊. Your dad’s sweater is going to be amazing! I might have to make one for my husband.
Hi Nora, Here's a thought about your lovely brown not-for-Christmas dress. How about making it into a street length dress. Worn with tights or leggings and ankle boots it could be a very cute cold weather dress. I enjoy your podcast, and Ossi is adroable!
What you could do, save one of the labels per project, write how many balls each and which project it is. Put them in a folder labeled with the year. You could do that every time you finish a project and you won't have to do so much at the end of the year.
On the dress, I would suggest above the knee with tights and boots...the dark color along with the balloon sleeves and cables might be overwhelming knit longer. On your dad's sweater, did you taper his other sweater? Go by the measurements for that sweater to get a good fit. Gorgeous work on both projects!
On your dad’s sweater I would probably do the boxy fit. But comparing dimensions on the two which are hopefully on the pattern may help. As for yarn tags I only keep them until I know I’ve written it down in ravelry or wherever I’m keeping track of my project lol I think the idea of a scrap jar, or shadow box is cute.
Dress. Definitely keep going on the dress. You might be disappointed if you don’t bring your dream to fruition. You can make more cardigans. You’re an amazingly prolific knitter. As far as the shadowbox: keep one band of each type or color instead of every single band. Also, maybe write on the band which project it is associated with. Love your videos!
I've been knitting in my Artemisia... Influenced by this lovely TH-camr 😂 but I took my inspo to next level with dollar store yarn 😂 broke girl hack lol
The label collection is a cool way to see how much yarn you used in a year if you don't weigh and track in Ravelry or elsewhere. Maybe take a photo of it to remember the year and empty to start your 2025 box again. I track my yarn stash and use on Ravelry so I throw out the labels once the project is complete.
Happy New Year from Canada! Beautiful knits, I love the sweater dress WIP and can’t wait to see the finished piece. I’m going to think a bit about what I’d do with all the yarn labels, I always keep one or two from a project and put them in my project book along with bits of the yarn but that’s not very creative, ha! Happy knitting from Rhonda @knitsbykeyknits
I think you'll wear the Grayling more if it's a dress. You already have sweaters in that colour so it might get lost with your other knits, and you have the yarn so you'll just have to find something else to do with it otherwise.
great video! I'd like to gently push back on the gendered associations with fit and construction; just because style elements are more typically designed for a certain type of body doesn't mean they're not for everyone!
I have a journal for each year which I attach the labels and write what I knit/crochet, what thoughts I have about the item. There's lots of doodling going on in there too. 😉
Mindful consumer and producer is where my mind went. I however just like to make and buy it all lol. Just before you talked about your ball bands I was thinking of my collection. What to do with them? I don’t know I’m leaning to tossing them all. I do have a basket of yarn ends. I do make occasional amigurumi and they work great for stuffing and adding weight to those projects. Can’t wait to see your continued progress.
Just a thought on your cable sweater/dress - because it’s a blown yarn wi alpaca which has no memory, I would be afraid you would get a lot of bagging in the rear if made into a dress. Personally it drives me nuts when anything “moulds” around my rear end. Either way I can’t stop shaking my head as I’ve been following you since day one and am amazed at how intuitive and gutsy you are with your knitting. Do what makes you happy!!! Diane from Boston
I have yet to get to the body on the Saven, so I really would LOVE your feedback on the waist shaping details!

You knit so many sweaters (and will continue to do so). Knit the dress- you obviously want it! And it will be stunning!

I saw Jen Geigley made a paper chain with all her yarn labels from the year.

Not the Nora Noro Ghost 😭 I cackled hahahaha
😂😂😂 hahaha I love that you noticed!
I keep one label from each type of yarn I use for a project. I try to maintain a project journal, and I put the label for the yarn on the page with the corresponding project!
That looks super cute and flattering on you!
I vote to keep your dad's sweater on the more boxy side. I feel that is a more comfortable style for a man who is at a more "mature" age.😉
I’m not normally a monogamous knitter and I definitely have a decent amount of lingering wips in the “naughty corner” but I have been solely knitting on my new tessellated vest for about a week and its slow going but im loving it!!
The ghost of the Sand Cardigan!!😂
Hahahaa I crack myself up !
I saw someone (Jen Geiger?) make a paper chain with all her yarn labels for the year! So fun. I’ve previously been a trashed, but may make the chain this year! ⛓️
Ms Nora overthinking it-never!! 😂😂😂

Nora I think your Grayling is looking amazing. Fits great!
I'm working on an Indigo Frost Poncho from Isabella Kraemer. It's gorgeous.
Thank you! That sounds amazing! I hope you’re enjoying it!
I love the sweater (dress) as it is. It’s beautiful. I say save yourself some time and make a sweater because it’s really pretty.

All your projects are stunning!
Look at one of your dad’s favorite fits….. sweatshirt vibe or clean classic fit!
I would keep going on the long cable dress. I would wear it all the time with sneakers with my hair in a ponytail or messy bun. I have been thinking of making one since I heard about your vision.
Doesn’t it sound so comfy and fresh? Thank you for pushing me!!
Save one lable on your project page. Or make a paper chain for your craft room.
Sleeves are one-third of a project, so in 2 weeks you have gotten 1/3 done That's very close so you should totally meet you deadline.
My fellow Iowan, Jen Geigley, makes a paper chain each year with her yarn labels. I’ve thought about doing that too!
For the Saven sweater for your dad, I would not do any waist shaping, for reasons you already mentioned.
I have a knitting journal and I put a scrap of yarn and the yarn band on the page for each project.
Idea: Hmmm what about paper quilling with the paper labels and make a design /art with it? But I do just recycle the paper labels personally at this time
Definitely do the Grayling dress! It looks sooo good!❤
The grayling looks like an amazing fit on you! I don’t think you can go wrong with following your vision to make it into a dress. I’m so incredibly impressed with the cables on that saven sweater! I’ve been doing some cables for a blanket and totally messed them up at one point and it’s just a small strip 😂 I’ve been doing a lot of cables lately (and I’ve knit a lot of cable projects in the past) but I still can get turned around and mess up so easily 😵💫🫠
I’ve been focusing on finishing my Cinema sweater.
I vote for it being a dress. 🤎
The ghostly cameo of the sand cardigan cracked me up! Oh girl your video editing is always on point! 😂
Hahahaa thank you!!
Thank you again for your podcast! I got so excited when I remembered I could make teas and watch it! You asked so many questions I have thoughts on!;
I say take extensive notes and put your dress on hold until next year when fall starts and then you have its full vision in full excitement you can wear it for thanksgiving and Christmas Ect.
3) I wouldn’t do the waist shaping for your dad sweater I feel like it will make it feel like he can only wear it with certain pants but if its a bit boxier he could dress it up or just throw it on
You could even put pictures of the finish project with the swatch and yarn label in the sheet protector and it’s like a knitting year book each year
I would stick with the dress for your grayling sweater, but not worry at all about a deadline.
I admire your ambition and enjoy all the information you shared. Thank you !
Jen geigley makes a paper chain with her yarn bands lol I keep mine in a bag currently and not sure what I'm going to do with them. I do keep yarn bits in a reused large!! Glass vase. It's actually really pretty. I have another one with lil ball scraps in it.
You can do it! No waist shaping!
The Saven definitely looks very impressive! I think for your dad I would not do the waist shaping.
I am working on a few projects. One of them is a chocolate brown Yoga Winter Sweater that I am absolutely in love with so far. It is 100% inspired by you. I would never have considered this knit if it wasn't for you 😊
Thank you!!! I hope you love the yoga winter as much as I do! I think I need another in my wardrobe!
Nora thanks again for another great podcast I look forward to Saturday’s and your podcast. You do beautiful work.
I love the blue heather color for your dad’s sweater. I’ve been working on a Woolly Thistle Vanilla sweater using Rauma Finull garn.
Thank you so so much 💛 much love from this Finnish knitter!
Oh yea! Make the dress!!!!! Hehe
I love your sweater dress. You are a very ambitious knitter.
Thank you for a great video
What you could do, save one of the labels per project, write how many balls each and which project it is. Put them in a folder labeled with the year. You could do that every time you finish a project and you won't have to do so much at the end of the year.
On the dress, I would suggest above the knee with tights and boots...the dark color along with the balloon sleeves and cables might be overwhelming knit longer. On your dad's sweater, did you taper his other sweater? Go by the measurements for that sweater to get a good fit. Gorgeous work on both projects!
I tape down at least one yarn label for each yarn used in a project into my written knitting journal.
Omg you must let us know how it works up! I’m always so intrigued 😂 I hope you love the artemisia as much as I do!!
If the first sweater for your dad fits perfect, match it to that one.
Happy Saturday! So how many favorite sweater patterns is too many? Dive right in!
I have a knitting journal my sister gave me and I tie a strand of the yarn to the label and staple it in my journal with my notes on each project. ❤
Yarn labels… for gifts, I always include a yarn label or 2 with the gift. For my knits, I may keep 1. I may not
I think you'll wear the Grayling more if it's a dress. You already have sweaters in that colour so it might get lost with your other knits, and you have the yarn so you'll just have to find something else to do with it otherwise.
i keep one label from each project and tape it into my makers notebook
Ooh that’s so smart!
Not the Sand Cardigan! 😭😂
great video!
