Buyer advice: Check where the belt rides. If its snug to the left when you look at it from behind - you're good. If it isn't - the bike needs a new rear axle kit, which costs 750€ in Germany. Add shipping as necessary.
The alternator seems to be an issue for some, the latest version that BMW sells should be okay.
Another, very rare point of failure are the cam chain guide rails. Check yours for wear, when you check valve clearances.
The belt BMW sells you for the final drive can be had cheaper, just buy the Contitech 1158.
If you don't like the sound, that's due to the different exhaust on these. BMW fitted a reflective design instead of an absorption design. The reflective design filters mostly bass notes while absorption designs filter mostly high notes. The bike in the video seems to have an absorptive after market design.
As far as engine life goes: The engines die at 200000 miles for some, 850000 km for others. Yes, that's eight hundred and fifty thousand km. So if you find one that is well serviced with 50k km on the clock, that's still a reasonable buy in point.

      Really appreciate this!
The belt is one of the most costly maintanance items. Thank you!

Anybody have a problem with ABS light occasionally turning on while the speedometer going to 0 while riding?

@@GreatMotorcycleRoads Check where your rear ABS sensor cable is running. These do end up being toast from time to time. f800riders.org might help with troubleshooting.

When looking up Contitech 1158 there are few that come up each one different. Any other details please?

Hearing about this after I just bought a 2016 with only 14k miles on it makes me feel even better about my purchase.

I just rode mine. I bought it 2.5 years ago but never picked it up or ridden it. Finally, I got it home, new battery, service and a couple of repairs, I took it for a spin.
My impressions. Power is adequate, brakes and suspension are good for what this bike is intended.
Engine, vibrations and sound....Not bad, it is well balanced for a parallel twin, Rotax reliability. I absolutely dislike parallel twins but this one isn't so bad.
Comfort is excellent, fit and finish average, VERY easy to wash and keep clean. Overall, a good "commuter" bike.
Definitely, not a sport bike or long distance tourer, excellent for 2 hrs or longer riding non stop plenty of agility for the city and traffic congested areas, light weight and easy to squeeze through cars. Put a new exhaust can and got rid of the 20lb pipe bomb the factory has installed. Why so big? what is in there that needs to be so damn big and heavy?.
Overall, a very good bike. I like the weight balance, fuel tank low, belt drive and easy to live with. Compared to my other bikes, mostly Italian, it looks a bit more "rough and crude" but certainly a beauty queen compared to most of the Japanese bikes.
So far, very happy with it but not in love with it, yet !!!

Ive got one of these bikes, my friend has a gixxer600rr and at realistic speeds say between 50-80mph the beemer has the edge in speed. Its not untill the supersports get way above 10k rpm that they get to stretch their legs, the acceleration is more instant. And plus i get 15miles to the litre even with thrashing it.
