So proud of you, I am doing my own walkway as an almost 60 yr. old woman and am glad to have found your blog! I like how you mention all the tiny details...like using the small trowel, long stick the width of the walkway...pvc piping etc...Thank you so much.

I have a small enough job now but am old and do not hurry any more. A Perfectionist like You would give me tips and tell me when I am wrong. I absolutely agree. I try to answer all the questions I wondered when learning. Hans ALWAYS wants to play fetch lol.. when I'm at my desk... making... exercising... in the bath.. 😝
What a huge difference it makes for the look. Amazing job. Love seeing other women do these jobs themselves. We are totally capable. Congrats on your new walkway. A lot of work but completely worth it.
Because of the lock down due to the virus, after watching your video, I've actually gone into my garden first time ever and starting some basic gardening, it's a such a good feeling.

I can’t thank you enough for your channel! My partners not the type to do something like this himself so I said I’d give it a go. My dad at one time would have done it for me, but he’s in poor health now so it’s time for me to take care of things myself. Very inspirational.
Sorry to hear about your Dad! Sometimes knowing they're not near by to help, yet you've seen the quality of their work or determination in the past can be inspirational enough. I bet he's going to be proud of you as well :D My fiance would rather pay someone to do it, but I wouldn't have learnt anything otherwise and it was peaceful doing most of it on my own haha! Nice job. A lot of people use a 3-4-5 triangle method to square large areas. Any combination of 3 and 4 units of length on the corner legs will have a diagonal of 5 units when square. You can even do it with a 1 unit stick and no measuring tape.
I feel I need to reiterate this for the odd comment coming through. This ABSOLUTELY HAS HARDCORE SUB-BASE UNDERNEATH AND WEED CONTROL and I DO SAY THIS towards the beginning. (You can EVEN SEE IT AT THE START!!!) Why is this not part of the video? Because I didn't think a year or two before finishing it that I was going to pick up a camera and start my own TH-cam channel.
The aggregate you mention - is the grey stones / rubble you can see under where you place the patio? We've just ripped up our decking and have what looks very similar but mixed with a bit of sludge from over the years! We've dug down a few inches and there is no change so hoping we can remove a layer for damp course height, whack and then place the sand on top. You are an inspiration - we've just had a quote of £2.4k for ours!

Sorry to hear about your break up! You can absolutely do it! A nice thick slab is perfect for the sand method and it's a very forgiving method, giving you lots of time to get things right without having to worry any mortar will go off. You could probably just use a tamper by hand without having to hire the plate compactor.

Wow that looks amazing and to see a woman doing it is even better! You did an amazing job. I'm buying my first house this year and I've been researching on how to remodel my own home. So I will be saving this video for ideas. It definitely takes determination and a positive attitude to work on your own home.
Just been recommended your channel. We bought our first home last summer and spent all our money doing up the inside, so have very limited funds to do the front and back gardens. We've just done the front (old pea shingle/cat litter), put in a flower bed and covered the rest in slate, and this weekend I'm laying a red brick patio, by myself, in the back. We were quoted 2.6k for a 3mx3m area! Thank you for giving me the confidence to give it a go myself. The arrival of the bricks and sand was a bit daunting i'll admit 😅
+Joe Worden couldn't agree more! I am loving pushing my limits to see if I can. Over time, occasional friends and family have put me off. Using a router was one of them and It's such a great tool!
I’m like that, I surprise myself and others. I’ve always loved doing things myself, my husband always scared to start any project. I get fed up waiting for him then I take matters into my own hands, then he gets surprised and goes ‘I’m possessed’ 👻.
Reminds me of younger days before spine injury, loved doing large renovation jobs, proper planning was crucial, seen so many dive in blind & fail early leaving half finished jobs
it is very useful for me. I have a few projects in mind, but I am planning on starting with a walkway from the driveway to the fence gate, where the dogs have worn down the grass. thank you!!
You're very welcome :) If it's a single walkway without say a path edging, or pea gravel to stop them from moving, then you might find using mortar is better option as I later did for my front door step: th-cam.com/video/0EPWzp6BFJA/w-d-xo.html It wasn't as scary as I thought it would be, but you will definitely need to wear plenty of protection as mortar burns until it sets. Good luck :) x

Brilliant and inspiring, well done you! I'm desperate to get a porcelain tile patio laid, my garden has no seating area at all, but I've been quoted a whopping £4000 for the job! So I should do what you've done, but unlike you, I dont know anyone in the construction business to advise me, nor have I done any DIY myself. And I know porcelain tiles are much thinner than the slabs you laid, so I dont know how the process would differ. But you've got my mind ticking now.

You're not a professional so I feel I'm on your level, you really do make me feel if you can do it, then so can I. Keep up the great work 👍
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK Well Vickie, 3 years on (no sense in rushing things 🙄🤦♂️😊) we've finally relaid our cheapo budget shingle patio with natural stone slabs following your inspirational tutorial vid. In the process we've saved over £700 in labour fees from a builder. It did take us longer to put down than he would've taken but we enjoyed ourselves and felt a great sense of achievement. Thanks for leading the way. X
Thanks! I absolutely loved doing this project and have since done a stepping stone path if you prefer that option? th-cam.com/video/EtmmsS-SBm4/w-d-xo.html
You did an "amazing" job explaining and executing the patio. Better than most videos I've seen. I really like the large wood beams you laid down. The blending of a hardscape patio and the texture of the wood really sets the tone on your backyard. Time for a hammock!! 😀 Absolutely LOVE the #HansCam 🐶
Never cease to amaze us with your detailed project videos! Fantastically executed and the end result looks amazing ...but of course it would!! WELL DONE!
Great video - this has helped massively in my own DIY - currently half way through 80sqm of laying paving slabs!!! Saved a few grand and also burnt a few pounds (weight) so all good :) Thank you
True inspiration to others, really good job. Very impressive work, you should be very proud of yourself. I also watched the fence video, another cracking job.
Great job.. one thing i would have done differently would be to point the gaps between the slabs with a dryish mix and not the sand as i expect you are probably getting weeds growing between them and constantly pulling them up or spraying them. This method eliminates the weeds from being able to seed and grow.
Well done you. I grudge paying for things I might accomplish myself. I try it, and if I cant do it, then I pay someone to do it.............But you did it. great video!!!
Arrrggg! Where was this video when I was building my sleeper wall? Watched so many videos about how to get the wall square and not one mentioned a carpenter's square. Would have saved a lot of headaches. Laying our patio this week. Your video will be a big help. Thanks!
Very nice video. I’m planning to do myself too but still can’t my head around. Could you please list all materials & tools that need to make it for me? Many thanks
I know this is an older video but it's just what I was looking for. I don't know if I am capable by myself like you, but I will recruit some help. Thank you so much!!
Wow CD you are my new hero. What an entertaining, informative and simply brilliant video. I love watching this stuff on youtube and you are indeed one of the very best at them. keep up the brilliant work girl! They are so helpful and almost ceratinly will save a lot of people many pennies!
Brilliant I enjoyed your video. I’m the same I give everything a go in my home and found your site. It’s amazing what we women can archive if we put our mind to it. Thank you
Thanks for sharing your techniques, you just inspired me to go ahead with my project which I had been so afraid to get wrong. Just pick up, do and learn! Nice work.
Hi +Phil Mellon, I've also since used mortar on a smaller area *see my most recent video* and It's not as difficult as I thought if that helps. I did feel safer with the sand on my first go though 😊
The Carpenter's Daughter I don't no how I ended up watching your video but I'm glad I did, well done young lady you a little grafter. 47 years in the game I would have given you a job without a moment's hesitation.
Great work again - I've done all sorts to most of the properties I've owned, but I also temporarily added a table and chairs to make sure they fitted before I started laying slabs (I used 60 x 60 slabs and if you use shorter its a good tip to imagine what its going to be used in the space first) - great video again and good luck with you Blog Award
Wow congratulations excellent job!! I want to do something similar, perhaps with a wider gap and might have just inspired me to go ahead and do it. Thank you!
Tip when bedding up again the house or garage, liquid treat the walls with appropriate brand. Maybe in certain circumstances using a DPC roll cut to desired depth. When you do your garage remember to put in drainage in between the garage floor and whatever you are laying
Loved it really inspirational, I've got to break up my whole garden put down new borders and slabs but not sure where to start. I presume a sledgehammer and a pry bar to start then see.
I have several tape measures but only use the key chain one rarely. You look great. You aren't supposed to make your patio level because you want the water to run away from the foundation. A 1-5 degree angle away from the foundation works.
+T wagner don't worry, I installed them all sloping away from the house and garage. And I keep losing my tape measures, so this key ring one has been one of my best investments 😄 Shame it's only 2m long though!
Glad you done this. I'm laying patio myself. But I have been told its possible to compact the soil instead of digging it out and removing, then lay hardcore over the soil. I'm not sure if the soil will compact enough, any thoughts
I've been told the top 6 inches of soil is very weak and also, if not removed, weeds will come through. I'd personally remove it to be safe as it's a lot of work. Sorry, I don't know how effective it would be to compact the existing soil.
Hi CD, I have a patio which I have re-pointed twice, because of ground movement. The gaps are now empty, so I just remove the weeds when required. Do you know of any filler which would withstand ground movement. Many thanks
The one 'How To' series of videos that asks for any feedback or hints but doesn't get a load of pointless comments like 'that won't last'...brilliant :)
I have got my slabs, I'm quite terrified to start this but your video has empowered me, I have a few questions do I need waker machine, I'm in a new build I only have to roll up the grass as it has not yet settled and the ground is compact underneath, my slabs are 450mm thick do I need to dig down to that level ?
Oh gosh, well done! That's really impressive. I have been debating whether I can fence our garden off myself, might have to give it a go. You've inspired me! Nat.x

Rachel Atkinson dry mix of sand and cement. If the sand is moist don’t add any water if its really dry just add a little water
Well done you. I grudge paying for things I might accomplish myself. I try it, and if I cant do it, then I pay someone to do it.............But you did it. great video!!!
Wow... Great work for a novice. I am encouraged to do my garden now.
Great :D Have fun with it. It's very rewarding!
Well done. Searched for videos to show me how to do it myself and found yours :)
Many thanks
Did you do the pointing ? No joint slabs have square edges .Film it again after the first lot of rain .
I know this is an older video but it's just what I was looking for. I don't know if I am capable by myself like you, but I will recruit some help. Thank you so much!!
Absolutely brilliant job. I’m trying to think of how to blend round shapes into a square area .
Simply amazing....and now I'm amazed
Nice work.
Is it necessary to put dpc at house wall when laying pavers/slabs?
I am about to lay a patio myself and will follow your method,, was a bit worried about using a wet mix base myself,,thanks
47 years in the game I would have given you a job without a moment's hesitation.
you did a lot of work looks vary nice whati learn some to thanks
Amazing video literally going to be doing this on my garden. Thanks 👍
Why can’t I meet a woman like this she’s awesome
Looks great! the gravel border compliments it nicely!
Thank you, excellent info. will give this a go.... when I've finished renovating house.
What an amazing job you did heavy work as well. Very impressed 🌟
I love you, thank you so much for this tutorial! It will help me with a project I'm doing
Love your video, thanks. What type of aggregate did you use please?
Wish my mrs was like this, she can’t even take the bins out!!
Lol, that used to be me 😄
rofl
Stevo19801 Hahaha! My wife is the same!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha! Just let them overflow.... and eventually you'll still have to take them out. Been there, done that.
Loved it really inspirational, I've got to break up my whole garden put down new borders and slabs but not sure where to start.
I presume a sledgehammer and a pry bar to start then see.
great comment
I have several tape measures but only use the key chain one rarely. You look great.
You aren't supposed to make your patio level because you want the water to run away from the foundation. A 1-5 degree angle away from the foundation works.
+T wagner don't worry, I installed them all sloping away from the house and garage. And I keep losing my tape measures, so this key ring one has been one of my best investments 😄 Shame it's only 2m long though!
I'm good at gardening but never layed a pattio myself .. got a project to do for my misses .. I hope all goes well lol.. great video 👍🏾
@@TheCarpentersDaughterUK no problem. You have jus confirmed what I thought. Thank you
This is a project I will attempt in the spring. Thanks
+Al S hope it goes well 😁
Well done for throwing yourself into it, hats off!
Thank you 😊
Very good I definitely learned a lot very handy to watch u thanks david Peterborough 👍
Hi CD, I have a patio which I have re-pointed twice, because of ground movement. The gaps are now empty, so I just remove the weeds when required. Do you know of any filler which would withstand ground movement. Many thanks
Very brave woman...I love it.
How long did it take you to level the soil, lay the stones, and sand etc. will be doing this in my garden concrete slabs
Great video. Well done. Would like to try laying slabs myself.
It's definitely worth trying :) I'm not wonder woman and got there in the end 😂
Oh gosh, well done! That's really impressive. I have been debating whether I can fence our garden off myself, might have to give it a go. You've inspired me!
Nat.x
Thanks :) I've heard fencing is much easier than this, too! I'll be starting mine this week and filming it, if that helps? x
Hi Vicky. Once again, excellent job. Well done. Looks great. Love the vids. All the best. 🇬🇧👍👌♥️🌹
I LIKE THAT YOU SHOW THE COST OF YOUR UPDATES/UPGRADES TO YOUR PROPERTY
+DAVID WATSON II thanks, I think it's important to give someone an idea so they can compare it to a quote if they need or want to save money 😊
Lovely job. You're very talented.
Thanks so much 😀
