    Old car manuals were explaining how to do valve adjustment.
    Modern manuals advise not to drink a battery fluid.

      Exactly what I was thinking about when shooting this but saying 'don't drink battery fluid' could start some stupid trend today. Thanks for watching.

    Alec, it's all business first and foremost. Back in time manufacturers were more enthusiastic... time of pioneers. Today, no one cares but money making.

      In the 50's and 60's, there were no local dive shops so self-service was expected. That's why the parts, costs and process were included with new regs. You had to trust yourself to get it right, not a trained pro like today.

    I got certified in 2016, so I'm a relative newb, at least to the World of diving! Times change, but as you say, there are always pros and cons to old and new.

      Sadly as great brands like Dacor and Healthways have faded, so have proper parts, tools and manuals.

    For me it's just sad, because I'm a tech. I love the technics etc. I love to know how things work. Even if you can't fix it by yourself you may know how things work and which part may need to be repaired.
    So I prefer the old manual, by far.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm with you Ben but now its a much more disposable world so why learn? Just use and let someone else fix it. Divers are missing out on knowing how their gear works. Hope it changes.

    Hi Alec, could you please take a look at the scuba gear used in Luc Besson's The Big Blue, expecially the 'iconic' red frame Scubapro mask (with transparent skirt and filled with white silicone I guess) that one of the character usues? Could you make a video about it?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter

      I know of the movie but not the gear particulars. I prefer to have hands on gear so viewers can see it completely.

    This reminds me that I need to service my equipment, is there a site online where I can find such maintenance instructions?

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know of any as most modern service procedures usually have manufacturer specific tools. Other than taking a brands service course, its not something you can do safely online.

      For someone like myself who has dived for decades, I have seen the dumbing down/simplification of user manuals. Primarily due to legal concerns/liabilities from past accidents. Too bad as divers can benefit from knowing more about their gear and ho to keep it working perfectly.

    Great video, few people try to understand function, to me it's a safety standpoint. I wish the regulator companies nowadays would be more informative but I understand why. That's why vintage is so great It was a great research and development time. If you have any information on that a history lesson video would be great. I'd watch another one. 👍

    Hi Alec. Great comparison. As a former LDS owner, what are your thoughts on today’s world? I was taught to send regs back to shop for service. No ands, or, ifs. Go to LDS for service. I see this as a logical move for most divers, but it would be nice if there were more stores offering service classes for those that want to learn.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Service by a pro is still the best, safest and smart decision a diver can make. Maybe there is a recall you didn't know about, a pro will check the serial number for any issues before starting work. Few divers are truly competent with self service, even after taking courses and buying tools they use once a year. Practice makes a better service tech.

      @@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter" practice makes a better service tech ", this should be true but... it depens on what hands it falls.
      somebody that is sloppy in his work will stay sloppy even if he is " certified "as technician,
      I 've had too many bad experiences in my carrer to blindly put my life in the hands of somebody that can be sloppy so for convenience, I can have an equipment services by a LDS but be sure that I'll open and check the work before using it at depth.
      that emply that I've had to buy, build tools and study reference books before attacking an equipment.
      It is the price to pay to have the peace of mind when I use a diving equipment
