    Sitting in front of my goldfish and koi ponds when I got notification for this video. Was just thinking I need to get a couple spawning mops....then you showed us how to make them. THANK YOU! Perfect timing 🙂

    Brilliant posting Mark, I've been scrolling the net for 18 months now trying to get advice on breeding koi/goldfish, not high brow expensive procedures just grassroots advice, you've just provided that. I love the idea of duckweed as a food source, I've been using boiled egg and mashing it up with pond water, quite successfully mind. 👍👍

    I don't have Koi but Shubunkins. For some reason they are a favorite of mine. The first small garden pond I ever seen had a group of these and I was in love ever since. I had about 15 babies survive from last season without doing anything. Great vid.

      I personally want to breed Wakin wirh Shubunkin to see what happens. Will they get double tails? Will they be blue or orange or white or spotty? What shape will the be?

    You can use a polarizing filter and in a pinch polarized sunglasses to block the glare for future video I have a filter and have used the sunglass method with great results. It like when you go fishing with polarizing lens on sun glasses you can see clearly to the bottom without the reflection. Just a photo tip.

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They leave them alone. Just make sure you put big stones around the top of pot or they'll dig them out.

    Mark is there a way I can send you a picture, of what I think is a newt of some kind, for your excellent identification skills?
    I'm not 100% sure what to do with it next. I believe it made it into my tank on some elodea from my pond.

    Professional Koi breeders cull out the largest of the koi fry to prevent them from eating the smaller better paterned koi fry. And some will grow super fast, while other wil grow at. a moderate speed and still other will grow infitesimally slow. The medium ones and slow growers are those that should have the best genetics for some reason.

    Hi Mark , I have a pond with goldfish since almost 3 years now . I still feed them flakes ( looks like they enjoy it ) but I was wondering if I have to give them sticks ? Thanks

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi flake food is fine but as they grow they'll need more food so pellet and stick food is the way to go. Give them high protein in the summer.

    Do your fish breed all summer or just in the spring like wild carp?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normally between May and June for my goldfish but the koi can go at any time in spring and summer.

    • @UncalBertExcretes

      @@MARKSAQUATICS Thanks mate that probably explains why goldfish don't really breed in the home aquarium with no real seasonal variation with the water temperature

  • @Legzakimbo2002

    Great video Mark, can't wait to see the fry. Is it true that goldfish can happily breed with koi?
    How are the padawan Gobi-Three Kenobi+ all doing?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they can interbreed. Sadly the Goby's didn't make it. But I have a new plan for the next batch.

    You did not explain why or when to add the mops. Please help with this timing issue as it has been my only fault in the past with goldfish.

    • @SteveSandersonArt
      @SteveSandersonArt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      wait for a really warm day, late Spring May/June. You often see the goldfish starting to chase, but even if not, if its been a hot day, get the mops in, in the evening and they should spawn the following morning early, so long as the temps' remain up.

    you need an umbrella to shade behind your head to cover the refletions in the tub of eggs.

    Do you have to use real wool for the spawning mop or is an artificial fibre ok?

    • @MARKSAQUATICS
      @MARKSAQUATICS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use other fibers but make sure you boil them as some have preservatives on them
