only gamers knowledgeable about the industry can appreciate how well Ryan did this interview. great questions, articulated clearly, and well planned. probably the best interview I have ever seen in all of media, not just gaming, and I am not exaggerating that. great job ryan!
I remember reading his articles in OXM and watching the Inside Xbox show he did on XBL. One of the few really good gaming journalists out there, what helps is comes across like a gamer first and isn't busy using his position to push an agenda like a lot of media people these days, particularly in gaming media. Ryan keeps it about the games, which is appreciated.

Sony did not invent 1080p tech it's been in trials since 1936 from a British company it was Philips and other to push HD broadcasting not Sony... like I always say Sony replicates. Nintendo revolutionized the the industry of gaming

NextGenNate No they didn't Blu-ray was created founded by (Blu-ray Disc Association) not Sony... Sony was a member as others majors companies to use the Blu-Ray Technology.

this interviewer should ask more hard on questions like more on psx startup, ps2 hardware complications, ps2 backwards compatibility for ps3 missing to sell of ps2 stock, otheros that lead to hackers getting pissed to hack ps3, and so on! Still decent interview.
Ryan McCaffrey is a really good interviewer. I'm actually surprised at his interviews. Hearing Jack's voice makes me sad he isn't president anymore. Something about his personality makes me want to listen to what he has to say.

Man. This guy was PlayStation's Phil Spencer. I wish Jack continued as head of PlayStation. Would've been awesome to see him in charge of the next generation.
From the sound of things, he'd had his fill of the Sony corporate culture. Imagine after a while, you just want to move on to something else.

i think he was being a little political with the PS Vita though. If the market wasn't good for it then why was 3DS selling?
The reason PS Vita failed so much was because of the the Sony only expensive memory cards etc. Over-expensive unnecessary proprietary things the stubborn Japanese hardware Sony guys made but he didn't want to throw blame on them.
These are such quality segments, it is so above IGN's usually output. I feel like they need to advertise this show more, I always forget about it and Im a daily IGN user.
Don't they have any PlayStation experts to interview Jack. It's just weird that McCaffery does this interview and goes to the PlayStation Meeting even though he has long been in charge of the Xbox division. IGN needs Playstation experts like they used to have with Colin and Greg.
at IGN, there is no such thing as "PlayStation experts" or "Xbox experts", Ryan always a reporter first . both on Unlocked and Beyond they have specified that people who work at IGN have to be malleable and just love games in general over a piece of plastic. I understand your point, but I believe Ryan is one of the best interviewers at IGN, I was really impressed by his impression of PS4 pro at the event.

I missed this interview when it came out four years ago, a lot has happened since then so it´s a great video to go back to.
This guy speaks like a robot, no personality. Nothing like Phil Spencer or Peter Moore.
For me, the PS3 was where Sony became the lynchpin of console gaming in true critical acclaim terms. I saw PS2's sales as very disproportionate to what Xbox and Gamecube often did better. It's as if the PS2 benefited from a perfect storm of being first console with a DVD player, PS1 owners upgrading (some of whom were casual, later Wii, buyers), the Japanese being stubbornly loyal to PlayStation and its RPGs at that time. PS3 had a concentration on cinematic games and, having tough sales competition from the Xbox 360 and Wii, it was, in the end, Sony who 'worked harder'. The PS4 has some great games due to launch but the main groundwork in games philosophy was set by the PS3 as PS4's main evolution was in simplifying and using the saved money to spend more on the raw tech. But it was the complication of the PS3 era that was so interesting, to see the very many things it tried out including Sixaxis, free online, cell, bluray, niche games, ironed out in to the profitable format of the PS4. I like how Jack Tretton sounds like fun is the most important thing to him about gaming.
He is like a classy gentleman what makes him so likeable.

I get what you were trying to say, Ryan, with the quality vs quantity question, but I think you could have framed it better by asking: "What was Sony's take on continuing a franchise with several sequels (Microsoft's position with the 360) vs having more one-off exclusives (Sony's stance)?"
Regardless, another great episode! Can't say thank you enough for bringing this type of content to IGN. There's a nice level of diversity on your site now, so much content to love lol. Keep it up :]
So why did Jack Tretton leave Sony Computer Entertainment? I remember seeing him in so many advertisements for games and the PlayStation 3

I like this guy. he's well seasoned and his lived a little It shows in his comments:
1- he doesn't play ps anymore because if you've work for years at an ice cream parlor that only sold vanilla ice cream the last thing you want is vanilla ice cream.
2- becoming ceo of sony america right before playstation 3 launch was like becoming captain of the titanic right before it hit the iceberg.
Every IGN video makes you sit through advertising! no problem once every few videos you watch but seems all the time for me every video!!!😤.
I'm surprised he wasn't made to sign an Sony NDA (or something similar) keeping him from speaking about things he's talking about in this interview.
We need this guy back. Ever since he has been gone, PlayStation exclusive games turned from a once or twice a month kind of deal into a once or twice a year one. I don't know if it was Jack himself who secured so many PS3 exclusives back in the day, but I do remember him saying in interviews that he personally felt like he had to provide all of these exclusives in order to keep the fans happy - and now that he's gone, Sony barely ever releases any damn games. I mean, there have been years in this generation where Sony has released around 2 exclusives, this is a far cry from how Sony operated in the PS3 era and not only that, but when it's just 2 games, there's a high chance that you're not going to like both of them, or maybe you won't like either of them. What I'm getting at is that, we're not exactly spoiled for choice, are we? And the thing is, in the PS3 era, I feel like we were spoiled for choice and now with the PS4, the standards have dropped significantly not only in terms of quantity but also quality, for the most part.
We need you back, Jack!!

first game i saw on the ps2 was Ridge racer 5 and the bouncer man was i blown away :)
and at the time i had a Dream cast and PS1

He's a business man. Money is his motto.
His main job was to market the games and products. Without him ps4 wouldn't have been the top selling console for as long as it was.
I was always an Xbox guy but Jack Tretton was always my favorite CEO in the Sony vs Microsoft race. However Phil Spencer is better than the current Sony CEO, it would have been a GREAT time in gaming history if Jack and Phil were competitors since they are both respectful charismatic leaders.
Great interview. I found it funny how he had no answer at all regarding rumble patents and the sixaxis. Even when Ryan pressed again, he just repeats that controllers change over time.
Jack seems like such a cool dude. Especially for a businessman. He made a great point about video games being made into movies too. that is an interesting reversal

You can already buy 4k player dirt cheap for a while.
And most people will get their first experience of some kind of 4k gaming with ps4 pro. You are right tho, but i dont think 4k blu ray is going to hit as hard as sony did when they originally dropped blu ray and dvd back on ps2 and ps3. Especially when were in the transition to digital media. Most people are gonna get there 4k content from online.

Overall good interview however he really wanted to avoid or didn't understand the question about the rumble feature in the PS3 controller because he was asked multiple times about that decision and his answer didn't match the question. The last time he answered he started talking about the PS1 controller vs the launch PS3 controller he was asked about.

The Boomerang controller was at E3 2005. I know because I was there and took pics of it contained in a glass box.
Jack is responsible for the success of the ps4,since he's gone PlayStation has been going downhill.
