    Thank you for including the year-round and close-up pics. That is immensely helpful for planning what to do with this spunky little plant. I love that dark foliage contrast.

      You're welcome! I always like to see year-round pics when I'm looking at plants online -- sometimes I end up searching and searching to find them. So that's why I like to include them for others in my videos. Hope you enjoy this little shrub -- I love your description: a spunky little plant! 🩷

    I've just commented on your site. I honestly don't know why there isn't a website which shows you what a plant looks like in the different seasons, or even in every month throughout the year. So, thank you for your informative video and website. Like I say, I'm planting Kramer's Rote on my mother's grave and aim to plant the daffodil bulbs in between so the daffodils emerge through the magenta carpet. Thanks again ❤️

      Geez, thank you, but I'm feeling like I could use more variety! But the daffodils aren't eaten by the pandemic rabbits, so I have to go with those!

    I hope this will survive winters long term in zone 6. I bought a winter heath yesterday at a grocery store and planted it. My Calluna already died, I hope that this one will live.

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you within US garden zones 6 - 8? If you're in those zones, hopefully Home Depot or Lowe's will have them. I know I've purchased mine in the past during the month of April. I'd also suggest asking your local nursery if they could order them for you. But I've had better luck with those big box stores. Fingers crossed for you Mai!

    I love your garden tours! I have had the Kramer's Red Heather on my wish list since I first found your videos. I just bought some at Lowes yesterday. I'm in northern Maryland zone 7. Do I have to wait till after last frost to plant? The lady at Lowes recommended this, but they seem like they would hold up to a frost. Thank you for all the inspiration. Can't wait to plant them.

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m so glad you found some at Lowes, Kitty! Yes, it will be best to wait a few weeks until planting. Let the ground warm up a bit. You’re right that Kramer’s Red is hardy, but the roots need some warmer soil to get established better after planting. But I can relate: I can’t wait to start planting either! Being patient is not easy. 🙂

    I miss the “pandemic bunnies “😢
    you mentioned shade .
    I just purchased some of each and was going to plant both in full sun ? Do they not like a lot of sun ?
    Also was going to plant them high and dry ( water till established) … but u have one near a sprinkler head ?
    I’m in zone 7 b N J .

    how far did you space them to get those nice clusters i want to get a cluster like your lamp post bed in my new raised bed

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi John, I spaced them a few inches apart, probably closer together than most would recommend. However, I've not had them become overcrowded yet (after 6 years so far). In my video on planting tips (for daffodils), there's a way-too-brief shot of an example of how I planted a cluster of these daffodils. Here's the video link: th-cam.com/video/9vh17vjRiSQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=NONbO5eQLLaNGutW (You'll see the example just after the 3-minute mark.) What I do is plant a cluster of an odd number like 5 or 7 bulbs together, and then if the area is larger enough I'll add one or two bulbs planted nearby. It creates a more natural look, like the extra bulb or two are going to join up with the cluster. For larger bulbs, I'll do the same thing, but I might limit it to 3 to 5 bulbs clustered together at the most, just because as those larger bulbs multiply they will run out of room underground more quickly than these smaller petite bulbs. I hope this makes sense? 😀

    My neighbor has this Winter Heath in their front yard & the flowers are just mesmerizing. I googled the plant & I’m happy to see your channel explaining further. I need to get this plant. Is this considered an evergreen? I live in NY zone 7b.

      Happy New Year Sammy! Yes, Heaths and Heathers are evergreen! I have an in-depth guide on my website for you: www.petscribbles.com/kramers-red-winter-heath/ 💕 Heath blooms Winter into Spring, and usually is sold in the Spring at garden centers and nurseries. I found mine at Lowes and Home Depot. I hope this helps! 🙂

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Graham, The best soil can be an entire topic! Not too sandy, and not too much clay - that’s the perfect soil, a nice loamy soil that is loose and filled with organic nutrients. An excellent book I have is “Grow Your Soil” by Diane Miessler. You can find it on Amazon and it explains everything clearly on how to improve your soil, including how to figure out what kind of soil you have. I hope this helps! 🌱🌿

    I was a little late planting my heath. The plant dried out, not completely, but the needles started to fall off, yesterday. I got it into the ground today. It perked up a little, but I'm worried it'll die. What can I do besides cross my fingers?

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Winnie -- as long as your Heath gets enough water -- and they love water, especially when they are first getting established in your garden -- the overall shrub should be fine. 👍 If you see a few stems that die off, that's ok. Just take your hand pruners and snip them off -- it won't harm the shrub. Now is a great time to add some fertilizer. Heaths love a neutral to acid soil, and can benefit from some acidic slow-release fertilizer like Holly-tone by Espoma. (That's what I use.) You can sprinkle it around the perimeter of the shrub and gently work it into the soil and mulch. Water it in or let Mother Nature water it in for you. This first season in the ground make sure it gets enough water, as they can dry out easily and once they get drought-stressed, it can be hard for them to recover fully. Please keep me posted on how your heath is doing! 🙂

    • @winniecash1654
      @winniecash1654 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Garden Sanity thank you for the pointers! I will not let it dry out again. If I break off a little end of a twig, it is green on the inside. So I'm hopeful.

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@winniecash1654 Green on the inside is great Winnie! These are tough plants, even if they seem to get dried out easily: their roots underground are good. I'm sure with your giving it some care it will be just fine! 💜

    Would these make a nice boarder along a walkway?

    • @GardenSanity
      @GardenSanity  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Carey - They would indeed as long as your walkway garden gets enough moisture so these don’t dry out. That’s the key with heath: they love sun but they can’t dry out, as they don’t do well or recover well at all if they do. You don’t want to drown them, but if your soil retains moisture, you’re good. If the walkway garden is more on the dry side, I’d avoid planting them there. (They don’t like to be moved once they’re planted too. I transplanted some as an experiment last season, and they don’t look so good so far…) In the video, you can see that mine are pretty close to the front of my flower beds, so yes it is a nice look as you’re walking by! I hope this helps? 🙂
