Hi Courtney -- they won't get leggy, but their growth will be more natural, more "wild" with some stems sticking out farther than others. For the first several years, I didn't need to prune mine at all -- and these are slow-growing too. Pruning heath is helpful when you feel the shrub is getting a bit unwieldy. And you don't need to do it every year if you don't want to either. Because these are slow-growing, they aren't going to reach the previous size (that they were before you pruned them) in a year...it may take a couple of years or so. Trimming a stem here and there is also helpful and could be easier. 🙂
Why thank you so very much! I work hard on them, and I'm a one-woman show, so sometimes it takes awhile to put it all together. So happy to read your comment! 😊 💛
Just got a small pot of Heather from a neighbor today. Don't know how to take care of it. Searched TH-cam and saw your high quality video about heather, very useful and love your video so I subscribed. Hope to see more gardening videos from you.
What a wonderful plant to receive Irene! 💓Do you know what color it is? My Heather is white and the Winter Heath I have is a fuschia-magenta color, but there's so many pretty colors and varieties -- I wish I could plant them all! (In my latest video, I showed how my Heath is covered in tiny flower buds getting ready for its Winter show!) Thanks for subscribing! 😊
This is just the lesson I needed right now! I have a heather I pulled from a patio container that looks like the one in the video and I didn’t know what to do with it.
Laura! I subscribed 15 seconds in!!!!!!!! I love how you got RIGHT to the point. And no dumb little annoying song at the beginning that is sometimes too loud and I have to hit the volume button to turn it down. No stupid music in the background (lol I love music, I'm a musician, but I also find it distracting). I didn't mind how you did use it. Best of all, you are very direct and clear I just love that!!!!! :-) :-) :-)
Well Barbara, you just made my day! 😊 Thank you for subscribing and for your feedback! I’m a musician too (not active anymore) and totally understand the loud volume of music you mention. (It bothers me watching TV too, when someone is speaking and they put music “as background” yet it’s way too loud.) 🙄🙃 I always lower the volume when I add music and this year found myself using music less, especially if there were wonderful sounds of birds to enjoy! I try to be direct in my videos because that’s what I prefer when I watch videos, so I love that you noticed that! Thank you and I hope the rest of your holiday season is a good one! I’ll be back in the New Year with more videos!
The Kramer’s Red goes so well with the juniper. Watching your video got interrupted by a bunny making a meal of my coreopsis. 😁 The baby bunnies have no fear of me, whatsoever. They’ll move if I get within a couple feet, but they go right back to eating if I take a couple steps away. Maybe they think I’m eating plants, too.
Thanks Will - I like that combo of heath and juniper too! (And now you can see it better since pruning!) I can’t believe the darn bunnies. Coreopsis is so pretty, and is yet another group of perennials I used to grow and bunnies ignored it for years…until one day they decided to feast. 🙁 I never thought about them thinking we also eat plants. But it could explain why they aren’t afraid. 🤔🤣
So you find the Heath or Heather minimize deer pressure on your daffodils? I have just obtained my first heath ( Kramers red) but I have a really deep love for daffodils and day Lillie’s but I have LOADS OF DEER! If this is helpful I would be so happy !
I mention and list the name in the first 20 seconds: Kramer’s Red Winter Heath. 🩷 It’s a wonderful Winter-blooming shrub. Scroll up to the Description Box and you’ll see a link to a video all about this shrub! 👍
Trimming it even a little bit is better than nothing, so you weren’t doing anything wrong. 🙂👍 (And in the wild, nobody is pruning these except possibly Mother Nature or an occasional animal!) 💕
What if you don’t prune them? Do they get leggy like lavender or do they just get big?

Thanks Laura - I'm a visual learner and understand now - I can't wait for updates on the Heath's and Heathers in Fall and Winter🙂
You’re welcome Snappy! Keep me posted on how the pruning goes! 👍🙂
I love the quality of your videos!

Hi Laura. Finally got to see your Heath’s pruning vid. Appreciate the step by step tutorial. I can’t wait to do this following Spring TY❤
Really useful video. Thanks from Ireland.
You're very welcome! I imagine heath and heather grows beautiful in Ireland's climate - which I'm envious of, by the way!
This is just the lesson I needed right now! I have a heather I pulled from a patio container that looks like the one in the video and I didn’t know what to do with it.
Oh wow, this is perfect timing! 👍 I hope you get to enjoy your heather plant for years to come! 🐝

Tomorrow I will be trimming my Kramer's red winter heath. Thanks Laura
You’re welcome Carol! Please let me know how it goes! 🙂✂️
I wish those heaths were a zone 5!!!! I would have dozens LOL!!! Thank you for yet a wonderful video and for exposing things so well 🌷🌷🌷
I know - you would really love them! 💕 And thank you too - so glad you enjoyed the video! 🙂
@@GardenSanity sooner or later you should do a whole garden tour once the hydrangeas bloom!!! I would love to see everything!! 🌸🌸🌸🌸
Definitely going to happen! And maybe I’ll even have it mulched! 🤣

The hedge trimmers look amazing

What is the pink shrub called?

Apparently I need to cut my heather back way more than I did. Thanks!

@@GardenSanity you're the best
@@zachary5664 Well I'm not sure about that -- but I appreciate the sentiment! 😀😊
