More Scrubs! Yet another cracking episode recommended by you! A couple of apologies: firstly not knowing what a Mike and Ike is (I even got it wrong when I looked it up! It's chewy candy rather than chewing gum), and also the contrast in the video is a bit dodgy as I under exposed the footage and had to crank it up in the edit (that's why I look like I have a mega tan). Let me know any other episodes or shows you want me to check out and I'm sure to do similar mistakes covering them too! Have a great weekend all. X
I can't watch this episode without thinking about the follow up episode that's so heartbreaking. I appreciate how real the show gets, and I'm glad to hear that it's a fairly faithful representation of actual hospital environments. (Apart from random birds stealing things.) Another great video, thank you!
Carry two pens. The nice pen that you enjoy writing with and the free pen from the drug rep that you will lose to your colleague who is constantly borrowing pens. "No, Bridgette, you cannot borrow my Uniball Signo 207 5 mm tip with a clicky top. How do you feel about Bic Stic advocating diamox?"
To give a bit a context you're missing from just watching individually recommended videos, unlike Scrub's normal guest stars this patient has been with them for something like 6+ episodes at this point. Hope that helps understand why everyone seemed to be treating this as an abnormally big deal within the show, and why this ending scene was supposed to hit the way it did.
Scrubs visualization of infection spread has stayed with me ever since I first saw it, and definitely these last years when I've had to consider even more what I do to stop things from spreading. Even if the big C spreads more through breath and air, I think I'll stick with my new routines of hand-cleanliness whenever I can!
I always remember the feeling of my heart sinking when I saw Cabbage go in for that hand shake So devastating Glad to see you reacting to scrubs again! Also really happy you kept in your full reaction to the Awful Father daydream, it was so fun
I believe that the sepsis was a result of the suppository the patient FAILED to receive when the Mike&Ike was inserted instead, not the candy itself. But I'm not a doctor. I did, however, play one on the playground.
Surely your oath to do no harm must extend to not giving patients copies of the Daily Mail? You must have access to less dangerous alternatives so you can help ween them off. :D
The Daily Mail has(or had) one feature that I really enjoyed - the size and number of the sheets - made it ideal for lining my guinea pig's hutch, so I used to buy it once a week. Other tabloids are available, sure, but it always amused me that my pets pissed on Richard Littlejohn.
10:56 When my Grandmother died, my auntie was given a box full of belongings that were completely the wrong person’s. Then when she did get the right box of possessions my Grandmother’s wedding ring was missing. Surely it’s not too difficult to have a system in place to ensure this type of thing doesn’t happen.
When my grandma died in 2016, she had planned on giving us her jewelry. A lot of it was gone. She was in a care facility not a hospital, but ppl steal a LOT. That stuff can be valuable but it's so disrespectful to just take it!
The song of yours at the end is really nice. I would have thought it was the actual track used in the show if it wasn't for your disclaimer, it fit the tone so well.
To this day still one of the saddest episodes to watch for me, especially its follow up. If you haven't seen it Doctor, I highly recommend it as it is still one of the most upsetting but amazing episodes of Scrubs.
In the hospital I work at (in the Netherlands) it's pretty common to gift patients cards or other stuff if it is a special occation like a birthday or if someone has been lying there for a while. There even is a small budget from the hospital for that. However it is no policy, it is always on someone's initiative (99% the nurses)
Both my late grandmother and aunt, who were both nurses, impressed upon us kids the importance of minimize hospital visits. By exercising preventative care, and knowing how to handle small things (Colds, minor burns and abrasions, losing a toenail - yes that actually happened, wear boots when hauling paving stones, etc) you not only take unnecessary burden off of the health care system, you also avoid going to the place where all the sick people are. Infections and reactions to medications take out way, way too many people every year. You owe it to yourself to minimize your exposure to hospitals and to pharmaceuticals. Doctors are good, medication is good. Especially demerol. God bless whoever created demerol. But too much of a good thing, yadda yadda yadda.
In a similar vein my parents impressed on us from a young age (and by example) the importance of seeking a medical opinion when necessary - from needing help to quit smoking, to feeling that something isn't right. That's what the doctor is there for, after all. As a result we were always comfortable seeing our family GP, and caught several potentially harmful issues before they got to be dangerous or hospital-worthy. After reading your comment, I'd theorize this is also another way to avoid hospital visits and thus lessen strain on the system? (Fortunately living in Canada I've never faced the issue of having to pay for visits, but I recognize cost is a factor for many people.) Thanks for the insight. ✌️🍍
In the US most people avoid going to the hospital to avoid the 2-5 hour ER wait times and the bills. That’s why urgent cares are everywhere now and they’re normally vastly more helpful than going to the ER where absolutely everyone gets stuffed in a CT Scan or an MRI or both and then charged $3000+ per scan.
Terrific look at one of the best episodes of SCRUBS ever. The visualization of how easily contamination can spread is one of the best and most haunting things I have ever seen. I have thought of it so many times since then.
This is the one time hearing someone buying the daily mail made them more attractive. I love that you got him something so small but so important to make his stay more comfortable.
As for the 'why we wear scrubs' thing, some years ago, my mum ruined a vascular surgeon's kashmir sweater. The poor woman had come in on the Saturday (not on call, just some patients of particular concern), and popped in to check in with her other patients. When she stopped by my mum, her AV fistula decided that was it's time to shine (and by 'shine, I mean 'rupture'), and... you can see where that story goes.
The following episode is absolutely worth reacting to. The 5 stages of grief and how people deal with it in different ways is not a widely talked about topic.
This hits close to home because my mom died of COVID that she caught while getting dialysis at a hospital. We were being so careful with quarantine but it got her in one of the places she couldn’t avoid.
9:30 I was at a CPD session recently and forgot one of the golden rules. I lent a paramedic my pen and didn't hover to ensure I got it back. Took all the stuff out of my pockets after that, put the stuff into new shirt pocket through muscle memory, turn up to my next shift with no pen (Luckily, I've taken to keeping a secret stash when I go out). Out of the discussions on effective pit stop CPR, post ROSC recovery, PPE + AGP, etc, the thing that I took away was not lending my pen. And that paramedic took away my pen.
Season 2, episode 14, "My Brother, My Keeper." I think it has a good medical message (actually a good message all over) and its one of the episodes that showcases a different side Dr Kelso.
great, insightful and funny reaction video, but the point about the lost death note though seems not to be, how patient's possessions get lost in hospitals. you can see the crow in the background of this scene, which the janitor trained to steal things - so it is insinuated, that he stole the death note.
I used to work in a cleanroom manufacturing medical equipment. The valves and clamps have to be left open when manufactured because after they are built they are irradiated for additional sterilization. If they are shut, then the irradiation can cause permanent kinks or cracks in the tubing.
9:30 Yep! Absolutely! It’s the same with the receptionists and the file clerks. I’ve had to keep my pens hidden in the filing cabinet to prevent them from getting nicked.
I must have seen this episode at least ten times. And it's only now that I understand that cabbage passed on an infection to the patient being discharged.
To throw my suggestion into the ring, another great episode you should react to is Season 8, Episode 2: My Last Words. It's one of the simplest episodes as it's mostly a couple doctors sitting in a room with a patient, simply talking. But it's up there as one of the most touching episodes of Scrubs
That sickly green glow is just so insidious, chilling, and memorable. I know a clip or two of that scene got a big uptick in views at the beginning of COVID (before we knew to focus more on respiratory spread). Episode suggestions are kinda hard because I need to change my focus to ones with especially good medical stories to make full use of your expertise :) I'm a little curious to see your take on some of the American-specific issues though. "My Jiggly Ball" - Deals with finances and bureaucracy, and a great Kelso episode "My Brother, My Keeper" - Not a huge medical story but a great guest spot by Dick Van Dyke about aging doctors "My Big Bird" - Morbidity and mortality conference with a dramatic ending
The only reason I know what a mike&ike is because we just had American candy delivered to the supermarket I work in lol (in the uk) so you're not alone!
Even working in an office supply store, I closely guard my personal favourite pens.... and sometimes, very occasionally, can't find one when I need it most. 😭 Love these episodes, Dr Hope! Please cover as many as you can! 💖🍍
I love when you do these Scrubs, House, and fight breakdown videos 👍🏻. It's funny and we get to learn, and that usually makes remembering easier.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My mom grew up in a small town where one of the doctors was a Seventh Day Adventist, who had office hours on Sundays. Kind of a neat way to divide up business between a few doctors in a small town.
What’s funny is in the title sequence of Season 5 Epsiode 23 My Eurologist, the recurring guest star Dr. Kim Briggs grabs the x-ray and says, “That’s backwards! It’s been bugging me for years!” And fixes it. Scrubs reacting to all the doctors who have pointed out over the years that the x-ray is backwards and poking a little fun back at them.
The ending for this one kills me every time, because the next episode follows up on it...sometimes I just skip the end of this one and pretend the next one never happens.
This is one of my favourite shows ever, definitely my favorite comedy, and i honestly think you could watch pretty much any or all of then and have a great time. I never remember the names of the episodes, but they're all great. Early in the show i recommend the gift shop girl arc, and anything related to JD's dad, all super funny.
An episode I'd love to see you react to is My Last Chance. I don't wanna spoil it ofc, but the ending just feels so incredibly important and something I think everyone can really connect to on some level.
I've never seen anybody do a reaction video to M*A*S*H - a classic series that still holds up today. "Life time" is considered one of the best episodes, hint hint :)
3:45 - This scene finishes with Keith trumping JD's gift to Mrs. Wilke as he invited Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who casually strolls in to wish her well. Do celebrities often make appearances during an outpatient's sendoff?
Weve made cards or sugned them for patients who have been on our unit for weeks. Granted its on a l&d unit, but we do become very fond of them and while we are happy for them to get to go home, we do miss them 😊
Thank you for all your videos Dr Hope. Please review season 4 episode 2 "my office". Hilarious opening scene. Lots of good elements to delve into on that episode
@@deadcatthinks6725 similar however Mike and Ike’s have a hard coating on the outside more comparable to jelly beans except without a licorice flavor. Licorice flavor of the same type of candy is called Good ‘n Plenty.
@@cannsmith Good n' Plenty's not really the same thing, that's licorice with a candy coating, Mike & Ike's are softer and the "shell" isn't as thick--and it's the same flavor as the candy, a bit like wax. Fruit Pastilles look kinda similar, but Mike & Ikes are tube-shaped and aren't coated with sugar. They look a bit chewier than Mike & Ike's, too. (Mike & Ikes are chewy, but not THAT chewy)
I was admitted into the hospital for an infection of the surgery wound. (Broken elbow, the part where the triceps are connected) at some point they found out it was a resistant bug. They got me out of there asap with oral antibiotics. Was hooked on an IV for days before that. Infection was probably caused because the suture they used inside was not dissolved after 4 weeks. When I pulled it out (accidently) the infection cleared up really fast.
I will say that years ago I was in Hospital on IVs and something came up where I had to spend a couple extra days in (including my 21st birthday), and the HCA's on the ward bought me a large bar of Bournville Chocolate to help me feel a bit better. But the idea of receiving parting gifts from most of the Medical staff simply for being a pleasant patient is a bit odd.
My wife broke her neck about 12 years ago and ended up acquiring e vulneris at the end of her four week hospitalization. Soon after that she ended up with Non-hodgkins lymphoma. She survived both but to this day still takes 500mg Cephalexin every day. Of course the medical providers involved swore there was no correlation between the infection and the cancer but it's always felt very suspect to us. Scrubs is one of the best shows of all time. One of the few programs the whole family has unified around. Thanks for the content!
I know I watched too much scrubs when I noticed one scene started with the proper music with cabbage leaving and the next scene was streaming music so it wasn't the right soundtrack
You should check out the korean dram Hospital Playlist its really great there are serious stuff but there are beautiful scene on the series also since youre also in a band I think you'll also liked it
My grandad buys the Daily Mail because it has large print and with his eyes its the only one he can read comfortably. I would love it if other newspapers had larger print as he doesn't really want to buy it either.
You know, having been in hospital in December, this show made me think I would see doctors a lot more than I did. XD Interesting to see a doctor's review of this sort of content.
Got MRSA from a hospital visit when I had an open would from my orthopedic device rubbed a sore into my arm. Was a huge PITA - needed to be drained and put on some insane antibiotics for it. Please everyone follow handwashing protocols.
This is true for lab staff as well, there is only one brand of promotional pen from ONE supplier of reagents that is worth using, they are all garbage in some way and this one happens to have just one fatal flaw. The outside casing is solid metal but it screws into a hard plastic inner sleeve which then screws into the tip holder, and when you drop that pen, that inner sleeve shatters. There's only one of the pens left, it's mine and you have to pry it out of my cold, dead, hands...
I managed to lose a pair of socks in a hospital x-ray theatre once. I'd fallen pretty badly in a mosh pit at Download Festival and had to have an x-ray because a guy in the medical tent was worried I'd broken my ankle. I definitely remember taking one sock off because it hurt a lot to do but I have no memory whatsoever of how the second one got off my foot. All I know is that I was allowed to go since my ankle was just pretty badly twisted but not broken and by the time I got back to my friends I had no socks on my feet

My favorite doctor to watch. Do more Scrubs! Keep up the great work!
Your style of songwriting actually meshes quite well with this particular series. And personally, I've had my lifetime fill of "Fix You". lol
This episode stuck with me and the next one I think is the continuation, such a great show
07:52 - Radiographs have markers on the image which helps with the patient orientation/position too.
10:49 - LOL. I lost one of my earbuds in the process labor and delivery- all that room switching 😂
Nice, more Scrubs , really enjoy these videos
You're not missing much, Mike & Ike isn't a great candy 🤣
Blasphemy! Mike & Ike is a GREAT candy!
But it does have that lovely suppository shape

The next episode along would be epic. But you’ve already done My Lunch, which is arguably the best one.
You love Scrubs and hate the Daily Mail. You are a wonderful human being with impeccable taste 💛
Mike & Ike's are pill shaped licorice candies. While the Cherry ones are a translucent red color, the standard M&I is purple and white ones.
I know I watched too much scrubs when I noticed one scene started with the proper music with cabbage leaving and the next scene was streaming music so it wasn't the right soundtrack
I forgot this episode ended with Mrs.Wilke getting sick again. Now you have to watch the next one.
"Having said that, I've never had a bird take it" 🤣
... yet...
@@RobertShippey A man of supreme wisdom. 😏
Yay! My favourite Scrubs reviewer!
I remember that talk about how infection can spread. Nothing quite like a graphic example.
Hooray hooray hooray. I love watching you react to Scrubs!
He really needs to see the episode of Scrubs where Kim interrupts the intro breaking the fourth wall and fixes the X-Ray. lol
You know, having been in hospital in December, this show made me think I would see doctors a lot more than I did. XD
Interesting to see a doctor's review of this sort of content.
Got MRSA from a hospital visit when I had an open would from my orthopedic device rubbed a sore into my arm. Was a huge PITA - needed to be drained and put on some insane antibiotics for it.
Please everyone follow handwashing protocols.
I remember this episode. I really liked Mrs. Wilkes and the ending was such a gut punch.
I love that you sacrificed your ...beliefs/morals (maybe neither is the word I’m looking for).. to provide for your patient
Your music really goes well with scrubs lol good job! 👍
Man… I remember the ep that follows… it's super depressing…
Very nice song. Thanks for including it. Is your music available anywhere?
Thanks Scott, the track is here: soundcloud.com/edhope/listen-to-your-heart
This is true for lab staff as well, there is only one brand of promotional pen from ONE supplier of reagents that is worth using, they are all garbage in some way and this one happens to have just one fatal flaw. The outside casing is solid metal but it screws into a hard plastic inner sleeve which then screws into the tip holder, and when you drop that pen, that inner sleeve shatters.
There's only one of the pens left, it's mine and you have to pry it out of my cold, dead, hands...
As a hospital admin I feel like pens, post-it notes and whiteboard markers are always disappearing...
Finally a new video ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I managed to lose a pair of socks in a hospital x-ray theatre once. I'd fallen pretty badly in a mosh pit at Download Festival and had to have an x-ray because a guy in the medical tent was worried I'd broken my ankle. I definitely remember taking one sock off because it hurt a lot to do but I have no memory whatsoever of how the second one got off my foot. All I know is that I was allowed to go since my ankle was just pretty badly twisted but not broken and by the time I got back to my friends I had no socks on my feet
I loved this. Subbed because I'm going to want to continue to see a doctor's insight on my favorite doctor show. This is awesome.
