- An almost forgotten sitcom, first broadcast as a one-off pilot, with a further three series between 1980-82. Of note for being Sir John Mills' sole sitcom role, and for an early appearance by David Neilson, later to find fame as Corrie's Roy Cropper.
John Mills stars as Albert, a pottery worker forced into retirement after 50 years in the same job. With no hobbies or outside interests, his saintlike wife Ethel (Megs Jenkin) has to put up with him constantly underfoot.
This episode: I Do Like to Be Beside the Seaside - Albert and Ethel take a day trip to out-of-season Blackpool.
Community spirit is rare these days. So unfortunate that future generations may never experience the beauty and freedom of living in a world where trust abides. Such a precious thing to loose.
Sir John Mills was a fabulous actor. Turned his talent to many different roles. X
Not to mention Megs Jenkins, a long time favourite of mine.
Well I would never 4:39 bad guessed with out you stateing the Obvious
@@lordeden2732 oooh. Salty comment. I might have stated the obvious but.... i will state it again. Wonderful actor who kicked every role he played out the park.🤣
@susieb7140 ... Yes, indeed he was.
I'm so glad that TH-cam recommended this delightful gem....warm, funny, uplifting to the soul. 😊💐
How wonderful . Oh for that time again . The world was sane and predictable. Thank you for posting
We are living in the least violent time in History.
Never to be repeated: the old community spirit, all gone😢
... Not with the Incoming
... And Northern Accents... Yorkshire Maybe 🤔🏴 11:04
You rather had to have “ community spirit” if your front door was a foot away from the neighbors.
@kibbylol we lived in a high trust society then, so we're condfident of safety. Now that communities have been destroyed the political classes and replaced by izl@ms and gimme gr@nts , we are so much better better off , we are told
Can't we have a comments thread on any programmes without someone shoe-horning their soap box about migrants into it? Whatever the subject someone will sound off and blame it all on migrants 🥱
Never heard of this comedy show before i watched one episode and I'm hooked.
Proper lovely tv oh how I miss the tv shows like this x

Aw, thankyou so much for sharing this with us, I really enjoyed watching it ❤
Why caint people be like that nowadays warm and friendly and appreciating😊
It's TV not real life!😂😊
@@michelejohnson6459 it captures the ecence of people when they were normal
And it was the height of bad manners to bang on about politics and religion in mixed company. People were taught to be polite and considerate, consider other people's feelings. Instead of making irrelevant proclamations either assuming that everyone thinks you're right or that you sound so belligerent that no-one wants a confrontation. Conversation was once considered an art, showing an interest in the other person, encouraging others, taking the trouble to remember what they liked. A different way to live indeed.
Even frivolous, throwaway sitcoms had excellent actors in them back in the day
brilliant, warm and hearty
I love these old movies, good clean humour, 👍👏👏
cant remember this at all...but was very enjoyable
I love john mills such a wonderful man ❤
thanks for sharing
I remember freezing at Holyhead waiting for the ferry as a kid. Have never been back! Thanks for sharing.
lovely warm and sweet.
Oh my, how I'd love to be in Blackpool 1981 eating my fish and chips from out of a newspaper walking along the Golden Mile. Such a nostalgia fest.
@juliepeters3716 ... Yes, indeed, the only thing that hasn't changed is that the seagulls still pinch your chips.
Wish I could find more than one episode
I remember this lovely gentle series, it was one of the last comedies produced by ATV

What a huge comedown for Sir John Mills. A wonderful movie career, then this tripe
Not at all. I would rather watch this with Sir John than anything modern. Megs Jenkin was in Tiger bay with him & Hayley.
Thanks for posting.
Meter readers coming to your house those were the days.
In 1981, a pint of lager cost 51 pence, while in February 2024, the average price of a pint of lager was £4.70.
Wonderful
Does anyone remember Megs Jenkins doing a TV commercial for either Tetley or PG Tips tea? Must of been 50 plus years ago but can't find details on the net.
@@annmozdzer1258 Nice try but she gave up acting long before that degenerate offering appeared on the box.
@@annmozdzer1258 ... No definitely not, her last TV appearance was in 1985 in the TV film "A women of substance". She passed away in October 1998 long before Little Britain was made.
The monkeys paw film

Yes as it's been such a popular one, another to follow this weekend...
Meg Jenkins played Selwyn's Mum in Oh No, It's Selwyn Froggitt.
I think john mills acted with megs jenkins in the history of mr polly
Yes, indeed he did. They were also both in Tiger Bay.

The same premise for this sitcom as "One Foot in the Grave". - See how two different writers ( Vince Powell and David Renwick ) handle the same basic situation.
Yes. One foot in the Grave was funny. Not like this rubbish
Carol Leader used to be on "Playschool also.
is there no more episodes injoyed
Those poor donkeys ...
What’s the name of this video
Was Carol Leader on Play School?
She was indeed

They got the accent wrong! Half of my family are from the potteries and they do not speak like that!
The political classes turned a beautiful country into a living hell.
80p for two drinks! Wouldn’t event get you the head on a pint now!
This was below John Mills. Sad really
Agree!! What was he thinking, doing this rubbish after such an esteemed career
Copying sayings from love of Ada!
