My family was blessed with a live in foreign exchange student a few years ago! My international study abroad sister was a young, muslim woman from Indonesia! She was an amazing individual, and my ignorance about Islam quickly turned into reverence and respect. It's always best not to compare ourselves to others... but since that's not going to happen, it's always best, when comparing ourselves with others, to focus on the similarities, rather than the differences!

Please consider that Ghannam may play into it as a coping mechanism as he is in a situation unfamiliar to him (boarding with strangers on a moving sailboat), and his philosophies may be the minority. This is coming from a poc who has been in similar situations. It’s causing a subconscious divide, and I’m sure nobody wants that.

I’m from a family of 10 children. Nine surviving. Unfortunately we lost one along the way. However, my best memories are the ridiculous amount of time we spent on a 62 foot trailer. We navigating the much of the Atlantic east coast in the spring and summers, with my parents. Then, later in my life, I learned to sail competitively. I won my first junior Olympics in two different classes, and repeated those wins twice. To this day, some of the best people I ever met were total strangers, who got stuck in a boat with me one random day, because I was the alt before I was formally competing with a crew. They would just put me with a skipper, and I would be critical and we would do our best. Amazingly, twice with those circumstances, and I won along with my captain /skipper.
