      Backlund earned the Sheik's respect by getting in the ring and being able to do the Persian Clubs unlike any other wrestler of his day.
      Even the Iron Sheik will tell you this.
      Awesome strength Sheik said of Backlund when he succeeded in using them.

      Yes. True legit skill. Backlund a 2x NCAA D2 champion. Sheik a national champion in Iran (where wrestling is huge) and international competitor. Both guys have had a lot of respect for one another for decades.
      Bob hasn't said it outright, but someone has said that while it's known he refused to turn heel to lose to Hogan, as he didn't want his kids to get ridiculed in school, Backlud also didn't want to lose to Hogan, but was willing to lose to Sheik as he respected his actual skill.

    In August of 1978, I went to The Spectrum the night Bob was in a Sicilian Stretcher match with Superstar Graham. I was walking along the corridor before the matches started and witnessed a large crowd gathering. As I got closer, I saw that it was Bob Backlund they were surrounding. He was signing autographs and chatting with the fans. I was holding a copy of Inside Wrestling with Bob on the cover. I got to meet him briefly and he signed my magazine. He could not have been nicer to all of us.

    Bob made a real good point that most fans overlook. He said that "the art" of wrestling is no longer there. Just look at Brock, he tries to peak moments from the beginning to about the middle. No one cares how he wins in the end, because it's almost assumed that he will win. Back in the day, when wrestling was wrestling, the climax of the match was at the very end. It didn't matter who won the match, it was how it ended. Much respect for Bob Backlund!

    • @pinnacleproductions6275
      @pinnacleproductions6275 ปีที่แล้ว

      So true, Bob was the real deal and wrestlers today could learn so much from watching him but it’s all about high spots nowadays. There is the art of wrestling and it’s been lost for sure.
      There is a place for guys like Brock and those kinds of matches, but when every match is like that those matches aren’t special. But if wrestlers were taught psychology, pacing, and how to really work and build a story in the ring wrestling would be so much better.

    • @HepCatJack
      @HepCatJack ปีที่แล้ว

      Back in the 1980's the WWF frequently had taped squash matches that were sold to TV stations. You always knew that Barry "O", Iron Mike Sharp, Steve Lumbardi and others were going to lose. These matches served to promote the live events to which they wanted to sell tickets to and for these it was less certain who was going to win. With the independent promotions such as International Wrestling in Quebec you had more matches where the ending was uncertain and these were more entertaining.

      Its too bad he had to have the squash match with Kevin Nash in a few seconds. The fans were cheated, Bob was cheated as he should of had a longer run, at least a couple months because he was over as a heel. And quite frankly, Nash was cheated because he just turned face and was shoved down everyones throats for a year. If they built him up as a face before putting the strap on him, then he would of had a much more successful run, thus bigger crowds and more money for everyone.

    My favorite Bob Backlund memory came in 2013; I attended a WWE card in Syracuse where he made an appearance. I went with another man and his son, who was a huge John Cena fan. When I noticed Mr Backlund, the boy was using the men's room, so I went over to talk to Mr. Baclund for a few minutes while I waited for the rest of my party before we found our seats. When they came back and saw me, I motioned to them, and over they came. I told the young boy about how I grew up looking at this man as a role model, and I remember telling the boy: "I respect Cena, but if you want a real role model to look up to other than your Dad, this is the man". Mr Backlund almost looked like he was going to cry, it seemed that comment meant that much to him, and the boy's Dad noticed that. On the way home that night, I told the young man all I could about watching Bob Backlund in the ring, and how they just don't make men, let alone wrestlers, like this any longer. To this day, nearly seven years later, that boy not only remembers that night, but his Dad has been able to tell him more and more about Mr Backlund (he does have his resources and I promised not to reveal them) and the boy says that part of it is all the good things people say about Mr. Backlund from the days before Vince Jr.

    Bob Backlund! The most "important" person in wrestling history! When he broke down the fact that he made other wrestlers "blow up" just by having matches with him, that said a lot. He was absolutely correct. Back in the day, the WWWF was Mid Atlantic (DC) all the way into Canada. (Toronto, Windsor, Novo Scotia etc) All those large and loyal television markets is how Bruno Sammartino gained his fame. By being a "face" that had morals, huge heart, guts, hard working, no nonsense and mentally and spiritually pleasing, the kids adored him and by the time Superstar Billy Graham took the belt in 1977, those kids who lived and died Bruno were grown or on their way to College, Military, or out into the regular life. So their kids needed a new hero! Enter Bob Backlund. Backlund wasn't ready for the belt in '78, and that's part of the reason why Superstar Graham wanted to hold the belt. Plus, Graham was on the verge of turning "face" which at that time would've got the WWWF over BIG TIME! Then, Backlund and Graham could've engaged in a cross promotion and have a classic face vs face that is capable of turning heel again if it meant protecting that belt is how they could've played it, and even include Bruno in the mix. It would've been the most EPIC, storyline ever, and I bet it would've blown up crazy if they (Vince Sr.) would've really sat down and really looked at what they had. McMahon Sr. would've! had the whole East Coast basically choosing the next Champion by TV ratings on the syndicated front, and revenue from the house shows. If they had done that in 1978, things would've been much different. Backlund then would probably. would've handled himself flawlessly.
    With that said, Backlund still was the most important. His reign put the Big Money makers in Backlunds undercard. Backlund lost the belt to Iron Shiek to accentuate a new narrative...Network Television and Big Time pay per view. It was wrestling that showed boxing how to make people fork over their beer money, or new Jordan's money so the kids and hard core wrestling fans watch those Pay Per View.
    Backlund was one of the best draws on pay per view because half the fans loved Bob and held him up there with Bruno... Then the other half forked over because they wanted to say I saw the belt taken. Backlunds personality made it easy for Hulk Hogan (a complete knock off to Superstar Graham) to wiggle his way in, push his gimmick to the kids and the rest is history.
    Without Bob Backlund, no way WWE is what it is today.

      @DixiePokerAce 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Backlund was from a different era. Granted, he was a great in ring guy and a genuinely decent person but he was champion far too long. Hogan was nowhere near the wrestler or the person Bob Backlund was but Hogan was money. Vince Jr. could clearly see that. By 1982 Backlund should have dropped the belt.

    I agree with Backlund about the undercard getting becoming better while he was champion. Bob wasn’t the most charasmatic champion in the world, and he got bashed for that by Bruno and others. But that shift to making the undercard better was good for business in the long run, and you had a cast of characters that could draw you money and work multiple towns on their own. And Vince Jr really took advantage of that during National expansion. Backlund might be a little self-effusive, but he’s 100% right there, and deserves credit( like Bret Hart) for making the guys he worked with better.

    Bob is so right it's about making your opponent better so he can have a better career. The art of wrestling is gone because it's about getting pops and not building up the match.

      There's a short documentary I saw on the Sheik. He's a pretty solid family man these days. I understand he was a pretty heavy partier in the day , but he's married a long time to the same lady for decades and he has lovely daughters who say he is a great Dad.

      Okay, two things I have heard: 1. Back in the day, it was rumored Backlund was to dye his hair black, turn heel and lose to Hogan. Iit was the heel part with young children of his own that he did not like doing. Later, Backlund obviosly did the heel turn when they grew up. 2 . According to wrestling wiki, Ivan Koloff, not Shelkie Baby, was scheduled to win the belt from Backlund. A knee injury forced a change to Sheik...

    • @christopherchipps5878
      @christopherchipps5878 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Buckyrhino Since Backlund had to lose the belt, I'm glad it was to the Iron Sheik instead of Ivan Koloff, because Koloff had already had ended Bruno Sammartino's first reign as champion way back in 1971 and was past his prime by 1983, and Sheik was a little younger and a better wrestler, a former Olympic wrestler.

    Why is there not any footage of Vince Sr anywhere? Not one interview, not even a voice interview, nothing. It's not like he died in the 1800's. He did business with Hogan in the early 80's. Why were there no recordings of him? Was he even real??

    • @scribe570
      @scribe570 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The old style promoters were not in any way performers. They were businessmen, like producers of movies and Broadway. The public never saw them in the spotlight. In many cases, they would have been awkward and shy around a camera or the spotlight. I'm from St. Louis and grew up watching wrestling promoted by legendary Sam Muchnik, who presided over the entire NWA for years. He never did a "promo" other than maybe tell the lineup for a future card on the radio.

      I know your comment was from 4 years ago, but I had to respond: There is a little bit of interview footage of Vince Sr. It was shot for a piece some TV crew did on Bruno. Plus he appeared as himself in the 1973 Verne Gagne-produced movie The Wrestler; there's a scene where some promoters are sitting near a swimming pool: Vince Sr., Eddie Graham, Paul Boesch and a couple of others. Vince Sr. has some lines in that footage.

    This is awesome (especially the end, was classic Backlund there in the best way), but I have to ask....if you didn't know this was from 2016, how many woulda thought Roddy Piper was there at the table with Shiek and Bob? I did for a while not realizing till just now when this was, before I saw the guy ask Bob a question near the end.

    Had Backlund went heel in Jan of 84, he would have probably never left the WWF. He could have gotten a helluva run with Hogan. Maybe even main evented WM 1 with Hogan. Backlund was a great babyface champion but was an even better heel. Likability about a 5 or 6...Hateability 8 or 9 which equates to a better heel than babyface.
