    In 1979, when I was twelve, I saw Backlund leaving the Garden as I was exiting early. He was three steps from a cab when I asked for a handshake from 100+ feet away. He stops what he' s doing, walks up to me, shakes my hand, thanks me for being a fan, and goes on. He did NOT have to do that and didn't feel bothered at all, more like he knew I was his bread-and-butter type fan, buying ringside the day the tickets went on sale back when it was WWWF and I sat fifth row ringside for $12.00! Truly amazing man and a definite role model for me right after my Dad had died.

    Mr Backlund, you do not know me, but you greatly influenced me as a young boy. I am from. Long Island , NY. I watched you hold the WWF title with honor and integrity, like a real-life superhero. One of my fav matches is when you defeated one of my other fav wrestlers at the time, Superfly Jimmy Snuka in a steel cage match at MSG. I remember you doing the Havard step test for an hr on TV and also the wheel. I went out and bought a wheel and practiced my cross-face chicken wing. I remember deciding to start kids wrestling. My first event was the PAL wrestling tournament was on Long Island, in which you were a big supporter of. You were scheduled to hand out the awards to the winners that year. I finally had a chance to meet my hero, all i had to do was win the tournament. Unfortunately, you lost the title to the Iron Shiek just before the PAL tourney. I was upset... I thought I was not going to get a chance to meet my hero. But like the true champion you are, you showed up to hand out the awards. I lost in the semi-finals, but I still got to meet you. You told me that I did really well for my first tournament and i should hold my head up. I went on to be NYS champion, Jr National champion, Jr world team member, and full scholarship to Oklahoma Sooners. I just wanted to Thank You for inspiring me and for being a great champion.

    • @Kfowlkes09
      @Kfowlkes09 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Damien Jones Wrestling was mainstream well before Hogan, and George too. Gotch, Lewis, and Londos were international stars who wrestled world wide before WWII. As were NWA champions like Lou Thesz, Dory Funk, Jack Brisco, and Harley Race later on. Bruno was an international icon for the WWE years before that.

    • @Kfowlkes09
      @Kfowlkes09 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Damien Jones The sport wasn't niche or small. It's been super popular all over the world for the last 120 years. It was the most popular sport in the country during the Gotch era, and plenty of football players were migrating to wrestling as late as the 70's because they could make more money. No one company had mainstream name value before the 80's, but there were plenty of internationally known stars who did.

    • @Kfowlkes09
      @Kfowlkes09 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidvar9209 Backlund actually went to North Dakota St in Fargo which for all intents and purposes could be considered a Minnesota school since Fargo is just on the other side of the Minnesota/North Dakota border and is in a Metro Area with Moorhead MN.

    Backlund really respected Vince Sr, by most accounts he did it the right way. Unlike his son who didn’t even wait for his Father to die to raid every territory there was despite Vince Sr begging him not to do that.

    No disrespect intended towards Mr. Backlund, but the VERY FIRST QUESTION that was asked of him was rather clear, concise, and direct, yet Backlund went on some sort of RAMBLING, SELF-PROMOTION, and...proceeded to give an (essentially) irrelevant-to-the-question-asked, "answer"!?! No doubt, Mr. Backlund had a very successful career in wrestling (both amateur & pro), but he was/is NOT a good....speaker-on-the-mic! If we're being brutally honest, Backlund's promos & drops were some of the WORST in the industry!
