Thank you for immortalizing the Kabus! I worked as a driver for Koiviston Auto, in the same depot you filmed in. I actually drove that red long distance version a lot (number 297). I enjoyed both the long distance- and city versions of Kabus. They had comfortable seats for passengers and were very simple, rugged and economical. The heating was also great. Many drivers have their complaints about Kabus, but I'm not one of them. The citybus version was very quick on busy routes, because it allows you to open and close the doors while in motion, saving time, (and looking cool 😉). The long distance version had excellent space for cargo/luggage, a nice spacious cabin and great heating in winter. In a Kabus you really feel like a proper bus driver. Hearing the raw sound of the engine and the automatic transmission, or shifting the gears on the coach version, made me happy in a way that modern buses don't. Luckily a handfull of Kabuses have survived as museum pieces but I'm still sad to see them go. I really miss driving a Kabus...

KABUS stands for Koiviston Auto BUS. Originally the name was going to be AKRO (AutoKori Rakenne Oy), but that was allready in use by another coach builder.

These buses seem to be becoming less and less frequent, but it is in Lahti that I have still been able to travel occasionally on this brand of bus this year. Thank you very much for this video!

In Helsinki and capital region, electric buses are taking over. One of the bigger operators here is owned by Koiviston Auto, but I don't think Kabus equipment was operated much in these parts on the local routes. Kabus stopped production before Koiviston Auto bought the privatized operator previously owned by the city of Helsinki. They may not produce buses any more, but the legacy is very much alive. Even Kabus the company is still around even though they concentrate on maintenance. (Kabus comes from Koiviston Auto Bus, where the proper name Koivisto comes from an area lost to Soviet Union in the WW2.)
Some of the OSL Kabuses are in a quite sad state, guess the decomissioning is near and the servicing has started to be driven down. Great buses, warm and comfortable even when it's -30 C outside. Sadly same can't be said about the newer electric buses, which are like freezers inside. Even the radiators are lukewarm at the best.
