  • The fast and accurate AF system in the G9 is highly customizable. But this in it self can be confusing if you don't know what the different sliders do. So lets talk about it.
    Exciting upcomming event later today:

Thanks for the info. Very useful. It would be nice to link to the PDF in your video description as you mentioned at about the 29 minute mark. Will you be updating your pdf for the 2.4 Firmware update? Also would be great to have your Table of Contents so that we can jump back to the info we need in your video as it's long.

This was terrifically helpful. I love my G9, but this AF knowledge just made it even better.

In my opinion the G9 successor really needs phase detection and market leading at that. Autofocus is SO important nowadays as cameras are all so good. I'm considering moving to the OM-1 for this reason alone which is a shame as the G9 is in many ways the perfect camera bit it's not reliable and infallible for fast moving birds and Wildlife. I don't want to change 5 autofocus settings everytime the shot or subject changes and even then only getting 10-20% in perfect sharp focus.

Very nice, that help me, that's exactly what I needed. thank you ! the G9 in 2020 is again at the top, I do movies in 4k with it and I shoot mainly the wildlife, awesome camera.

What settings do you use to have a steady focus för video?

@@Luddd78 He won't answer you because there is no good answer, i love the G9 for PHOTOS but the autofocus breathing IN VIDEO drives me mad and theres no decent work around. You'll be filming your kids doing something and then it'll either just lose you completely or start breathing so stuff in the background starts to annoy you. They didnt include VIDEO custom autofocus in the G9 so dont bother. I wish i could love the G9 but i hate the video autofocus too much!

This video along with the AF Guide should be compulsory viewing and reading for any Panasonic G9 owner.
I purchased my G9 recently and found this video very useful.

You started to talk about the AF Custom Setting (Photo) sets 1 - 4. Then you said something about talking wildlife and how you can set your camera up for that but you went into the using the fn buttons for near and far. Can you set the AF custom settings for wildlife? I find focusing with this camera very difficult. Have had my camera for a couple of years but Nikon seems to have better focusing. Sorry hate to say that but getting a little fed up. Thanks for the video

Thank you very much for the videos. A lot of great content!
The way you are doing it while setting up a situation and showing us "live" what we are facing in term of interfaces and what we have to do is so helpful! Thanks again and keep doing it please 🙂

I am a new G9 user trying to learn how to use the all the AF modes. I was aware of some of these features, but the user's manuals are frustrating because they are so brief they do not do not paint a full picture of what these features are designed to do. So thanks for this deep dive! After reviewing the Lumix AF guidebook, I still have a rather basic question. I have seen some value in customizing the camera to "back button focus", i.e. separating the auto focus away from the shutter button. Although it seems nice in some respects, I want to know if that modification actually disables any or all of the sophisticated AF functions. Could you comment on which functions require the AF to be connected to the shutter button and what steps, if any, would allow all of the AF functions to work as intended with back button focus?

That was a very good AF presentation, thanks. I really enjoy my G9, but I also kept my old GH2. The GH2 had one really BIG annoying problem. When you turn on power it takes “forever” to accept the video record button (>5 sec).
Was this a recognized bug or something that could be fixed? Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks

Any Custom Autofocus for Video for the G9? They had a big Firmware update for video specs but did they include the ability to customize the autofocus too?
They have that in the GH5, the GH5S and the GH6 but what about the G9?

Does changing this settings in Picture Mode (on the G9) also apply to shooting Video in AFC? I do notice a difference in AF behavior, but there’s no where I can find to confirm this, help

At 9:34, you mention the presets for AF. I cannot find them in my G9 menu. I've looked under Focus/Release Shutter, and other parts of the menu. Can you point me to these presets? Thanks!

It's in [Rec] --> [AF Custom Setting(Photo)]. You must be in AF-C mode to set this setting

    a question:
Do you know if panasonic intends to include in other firmware upgrade the modes: live composite, life time and live bulb similar to olympus in g9?
    thanks

I usually take not very dynamic video scenes using AFS an I must say the pulsing is an issue (for example, look at the window in the background here beginning from 01:49: th-cam.com/video/zuoxAKnamOU/w-d-xo.html) ! Which better settings would you recommend for my G9 to avoid pulsing in such non-dynamic scenes?

You can't adjust the AF settings in video on the G9 like you can in stills sadly. You can with the GH5 though.
For your scene manual focus would have been fine.

The problem is that you're *not* using AFS, you're using AFC. When shooting video, if the main AF switch is pointing to AFS, it will be overridden by the setting Menu > Video > Continuous AF - if that's set to "On" (or "Mode1" or "Mode2" in firmware >=2.0), then video will use AFC.
So to get one-shot AFS for video you must either set this to "Off", or put the switch to MF. In MF you can still use one-shot AF by pressing the back button or touchscreen.

Even now in mid-2022 there are no Video AF custom settings for the G9. So for the considerable variety of Sports we just have to choose one of the preset AF settings for either AF of manual. I know that some of them can be modified in shape but that is not the detailed settings shown in this Video AF Guidebook.
    www.panasonic.com/content/dam/Panasonic/Global/Learn-More/lumix-af-guidebook/LUMIX_Video_AF_Guidebook_211201.pdf
Go to pg 18 for instance and the top centre screen shot. It is NOT on the G9 but it shows the G9 at the top of the page indicating it IS for the G9.
Panasonic gave the G9 a big firmware upgrade in Video Specs but held back on the Video AF Custom Settings.
If you want them you will have to pay twice the price for a GH6 or perhaps a cheaper GH5 & GH5S.
