  • @deustechmachina6061
    @deustechmachina6061 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I love seeing how others setup their G9 :). A few of the settings you chose had me scratching my head, though. For example, why did you set your video to 8 bit and not 10 bit? If you're going to do color grading in post (applying a LUT and tweaks), but you're worried about the dynamic range, why not get the V-log L upgrade? While not really a "setting", when you're shooting, do you always stick to the magic 180 degree rule and control exposure either with aperture or ND filters? Why did you setup the sound level display? Do you have a mic on the camera, and if so, what do you use?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks DeusTechMachine. I mainly use 8-bit because the picture profile only needs a light grade in post, especially if I've done a good job with my exposure and white balance. I always aim to try and get an image out of the camera that looks good off-the-bat. If I was shooting V-Log and looking to apply a heavy grade, I'd definitely go with 10-bit for that extra flexibility. In terms of shutter angle, yes, I always try and stick to the 180 degree rule and use variable ND to control my exposure. I like to switch on the sound levels just so I can see if levels are peaking. They never have but I guess it's just a control thing!

    • @deustechmachina6061
      @deustechmachina6061 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CameraGeeks I appreciate the response. There's definitely something to be said for "getting it right in camera". Why spend a load of time in post trying to correct things you could have avoided altogether in the first place. Even if you're not planning on much post work, the 4:2:2 10 bit files will provide smoother color transitions and less banding; however, the tradeoff is the far larger size. Definitely easier to play with the 10 bit files in post, too. More information equals more ability to stretch and pull before it breaks :). I'm just a hobbyist, so playing is fun.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not something I've filmed myself but I would have your aperture at the highest number possible, whilst still achieving a decent exposure. This will give you a deep depth of field and better chance of keeping the birds in focus.

    So is autofocus out of the question for weddings with the G9 and GH5?? canon M shooter looking to switch.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be usable in certain conditions but it's not reliable enough for weddings in my opinion. Saying that, I don't think I'd be comfortable using any camera's autofocus on a wedding...maybe for casual shots but not for key moments like the aisle walk. Hope that helps!

    Hi WFG,
    Great video. Thanks you very much for sharing your settings and tips. I am wondering if you have tried the Cinelike-D/V in the G9 instead of Natural or even the curves ans why your final choice was the Natural style please ("just because I like" is - sadly - a valid answer of course ;-) )?
    Thanks

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Romrom. You're very welcome. I originally started shooting with the Cinelike D profile (on the GH5) and was happy with the results from that profile too. I think I switched to the Natural profile as it only required a very subtle grade and saved me some time in the editing process. To be honest, whilst choosing the best colour profile is important, I feel that nailing perfect exposure and correct white balance is much more crucial to getting nice footage. I hope that helps :)

    Wow, great video. I am considering buying this camera. Please, On the Rec Quality menu, is there a reason to choose 8bit over 10bit.I would personally prefer to use 10bit

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  ปีที่แล้ว

      At the time I was doing it for smaller file sizes and faster editing. Shooting 40 weddings a year, it saved 50% storage space and if captured well at the time of shooting, the 8-bit recording mode was fine as only a light colour grade was needed. Saying that, I now shoot on the S5ii, so 10-bit is the only option available 🤣!

    Great video, thank you so much. Been waiting for this kind of vid for my G9 for a long time. Regarding your focus setting... is that now set for 'back button focus'? I've been having trouble getting that set.
    The G9 (with November '19's firmware upgrade.) is an amazingly customisable camera, but there's a LOT of permutations and combinations to learn.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! So glad you enjoyed it! Yes, that is effectively back button focus. The great thing is you can use it while recording to re-focus if your subject has moved. Yeah, the G9 became a beast with firmware 2.0! I think it's probably a better option for a lot of people now over the GH5, especially if they have any interest in photography.

  • @vladislavihl
    @vladislavihl 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    In your next video you should explain how to grade a footage taken with the settings you proposed!... I was never able to recover authentic colors in Davinci Resolve if I had reduced saturation in my footage. For my personal taste the Standard profile provides the best/most accurate colors if I reduce to -4 the contrast. But the dynamic range of this profile really sucks!...

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vladislav! I'll make a video on that soon. I'm using FCPX myself but I normally just crush the blacks a little, bring up the highlights and add some saturation. I agree that Standard can produce some really nice colours with zero work needed in the edit! As you pointed out...it's just a shame about the dynamic range.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Pan! If you're shooting in VFR mode (Variable Frame Rate), it won't record any sound I'm afraid. You can shoot slow motion by filming in 50/60p. It will play at normal speed until you slow it down in your editing program. Just make sure you don't slow your sound down too or it will go deep like Barry White!

  • @valerio_c

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Evert. Yes, I assigned it to a soft button. I may change it in the future to the little rocker switch on the front corner of the camera, as that would be even better. In terms of how I use the IS Lock switch, I normally have it 'off' when shooting any shot involving movement, like tilts, pans and gimbal shots. However, if filming a static person or object, I keep it on as it results in a much more stable shot, as though I'd filmed it from a tripod.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Alex. I've always found 8-bit to be just fine for my needs when shooting weddings and the files a bit smaller too. I normally nail exposure and WB pretty well and with the picture profile only needing a light grade, 8-bit does the job nicely. If I was shooting V-Log and doing heavy grades, I'd definitely consider 10-bit.

      Hi Michael. We're all aiming for 70% exposure of the skin. I say 65% and then expose so you just start to see a few zebras on the face. The areas with zebras are a little over 65% and so effectively, very close to the 70% that we're aiming for. Other videographers might be telling you 75%/80% but advising you to wind it back a notch once you see the zebras. It's basically two different approaches to hitting that same 70% goal. Hope that clears things up!

I appreciate this may not go into as much detail as you would like but I don't delve deeply into photography setting to be honest. I can highly recommend some of the following channels to learn more about photography on the Lumix system - Micro Four Nerds, Robin Wong, David Thorpe, Peter Forsgard, Sulantoblog and James Popsys. Hey. I switched it off for video because I just didn't feel it was reliable enough, so I opted for full manual control. However, I did setup back button single AF. I used this to quickly acquire focus on a static target before recording. You can use this functionality even if the camera is in MF mode. Hope that helps!

    I'm gonna film a wedding next weekend. I primarily shoot 24p with my G9, and edit in a 24p timeline.
    Do you recommend to shoot all clips with 60p - just to have possibility to playback slow motion? Any downsides with 60p in normal speed?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Widar. I would only shoot the bits you intend to slow down in 60p. For me, that means bride prep, walk down the aisle, confetti, couple shoot and first dance. Shooting in 60p and dropping it onto a 24p at normal speed will result in a slightly less cinematic look. This is because the shutter speed needed for 60p (1/125s) will result in less motion blur. However, this will only really be noticeable to film geeks like us so it's not a massive issue :)

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I disabled auto focus because it's not reliable enough for weddings in my opinion. You may have heard about the 'focus hunting' that pretty much all micro-four-thirds cameras suffer from because of the autofocus system they use. It creates an unpleasant pulsing effect. I just choose to avoid autofocus completely and rack focus manually when needed, such as when the bride walks down the aisle towards me. It's not difficult when the subject is moving slowly and this is often the case during weddings. If things are moving more quickly, I set focus at a set distance, and move myself to maintain that distance between myself and the subject. I understand that fast, reliable video autofocus is necessary for certain real world uses and I'm afraid Lumix cameras are not the best choice if this is the case.

    This camera has a recording limit of just 30 minutes, which is very bad when I'm filming long-term event, and it also heats up a lot. The camera is excellent for photography, but for working with videos of event and long interviews, it is very bad because of the recording time limit of 30 minutes, and the camera turns off every 10 or 30 minutes.

    Why do you shoot in 8bit and not 10bit?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Wardy. To be honest, I've been more than happy with the results I get when in 8-bit. I don't apply heavy grades to my footage and just try to get the best exposure and white balance I can in camera. Also, I mainly film weddings and a typical wedding takes 300Gb! If I change to 10-bit I'll need 150Mbps and and extra 50% storage space. I may try shooting the "couple portraits" in 10-bit in the future though and playing around with that.

    Hi there, really enjoyed your video, as although I don't do weddings, I was very interested in your thoughts on best video settings. I have a G9 and mainly take videos of fairly slow moving steam trains, which cover quite a wide area, coming into view and going away. I would appreciate any advice you could give me in this situation. Until now (I'm in the UK), I have used 4k at 30 fps, as I upload to my youtube channel, but also view directly on my 4k TV. Should I be doing at 25fps. Also I have had the continuous autofocus set to on, but wonder if it would be better off. I haven't been using manual focus and set on shutter priority at 1/60 second. To be honest, my videos have come out okay, though once or twice did switch focus to another area. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Peter. I'm glad you found it helpful. I would definitely shoot in 25fps PAL if you are based in the UK. You'll need to set shutter speed to 1/50 second for PAL. In terms of the continuous autofocus...if it's working for you and you are happy with the results, maybe just leave it switched on. Because the trains are moving quite slowly, it sounds like the camera is able to cope with it better. I prefer to use manual focus because it gives me full control, which is crucial when I'm filming at a wedding.

    does G9 still have that 10 minute recording limit?

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daddy! There is a 10 minute limit when shooting 4K50/60 but otherwise, the limit is 30 minutes, which is more than enough for most requirements. At a wedding, I'd always make sure you have one camera with unlimited recording as a safety shot during the ceremony and speeches/toasts.

    First time I tried video I had Continuous AF on (Mode 2, whatever that means---Mode 1 was greyed out) and got a horrible chattering/vibrating/shuddering noise in the audio. Listened to the camera closely and verified it's coming from the camera. Turn off Continuous AF, noise goes away. Turn on Continuous AF, it's back. What a useless "feature".

    • @CameraGeeks
      @CameraGeeks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think the noise is an issue with all lenses...just some. I was more inclined to switch it off as the performance isn't 100% reliable. Occasionally, it works fine but I wouldn't trust it at weddings.
