They had the budget. HBO spent more on TLoU per episode than Game of Thrones. Which is why it's so perplexing. They clearly had the funds for highly detailed infected and elaborate costumes, but then only gave them limited screen time. Even hired the same actors who played clickers in the game.

amen brother! its because of the subpar storytelling from hollywood that other mediums are rising up like anime and manga. we are starved for a fulfilling story that satisfies our need to be entertained at a deeper level. that goes for all genres, writers really need to step up their game or else the AI will rise up and take over🙃
I enjoyed your rewrite ideas very much. I think having some of the original writing staff and wanting to keep the game lovers happy they tried to adhere to the game plot and when they deviated, according to their pod cast episodes, they had very thoughtful reasons for doing what they do. But when one zooms out and looks at the potential quality of this as a movie instead of a series, I think I would prefer your rewrite, as a lover of the game and as someone who likes to spend time in the world they make, I too felt like something was off or missing a lot of the time. Nice work
Henry and Sam are integral to the story cause it allows Ellie and Sam to be Kids for once which shows the viewer that not only are they still children but that they may not have the luxury of being able to express it. It also puts everyone's guard down only to later be reminded after the death of Henry and Sam that they too are vulnerable and can die in a moments notice. This would have been more powerful had the show actually succeeded in making the world around them seem perilous. Pretty much agree with most of what you said. Love your channel keep up the good work.
There's something about the show that bothered me. It's that the costume department was lazy. I'll explain... So the outbreak happened in what 2003? And yet everybody in 2023 is wearing skinny jeans. However, skinny jeans didn't become popular until 2006 when Levi's released the 511 jeans. So in this fictional 2023 world no one should have skinny jeans. No one. It should be regular fit pants or bootcut for everyone.

That show is one and done for me, also, I most likely wouldn't watch the second season unless someone asked me to watch it with them.

After having had completed the game several times, and after having seen several video games remade into films and television series, the thought of watching this this series honestly brings me dread. I am convinced ahead of time that this series is nothing but empty garbage that does a disservice to the game. And, no thank you. Great to see you back.
That sounds more logical than actually watching it. I thought about putting it on mute and making up my own dialogue like when I was a kid, but the show is just so boring to look at. I had to smoke a ton of herb to get through it. The first 20 minutes set up the cringefest, and I just fastened my seat belt like a crash test dummy. 🤪

You nailed it regarding episode 3. It felt like the showrunner really just wanted to make an episode about a gay couple living a normal life, just to make a point. It didn't feel like it fit in the series, it felt like an entirely separate story. Or, sometimes when shows series spinoffs have a crossover episode with the main show that spawned it. There is also a lot of box checking in this series. But it's hard to find any new shows that don't have box checking.
i love your observations and suggestions here, especially the re-ordering. but i think some of the filler you propose is important for most audiences to develop feelings for the characters. sounds like you played the games so maybe you had more identification with them going in? also i think the decision to feature less 'zombie' action was intentional to distinguish the show from TWD. i took it as the zombies were large enough in numbers to collapse civilization but that they are not enough of a problem at this point to prevent small communities from forming, etc. FEDRA would have kept walls and barbed wire up out of default and to justify their control over people. in fact i found the zombie volcano to be the biggest abnormality in the show. i will say that if the writers' intention WAS what i took from it, it should have been explicitly stated at some point. great job as always brother.
Ok…now I need a video (series) about how LOTR is the best video game to movie adaptation that was never a game… Fellowship forms…then plays out a video game…travels from location to location hiding from or avoiding danger, making decisions, etc…then fighting a different “boss” of increasing difficulty along the way. Aragorn fights off black riders and Frodo gets stabbed…Fellowship fights hydra/kraken outside Moria…cave troll…escape to the bridge…Gandalf fights the balrog…etc. All new and more difficult levels of a video game…🤷♂️

I just don't care about the drek, but your edit is way better obviously and thankfully no forced gay relationship in your edit. The biggest flaw in the first game was Joel killing the fireflies at the end of the first game which didn't make a lot of sense and was a complete 180.

A gamer can immerse themselves in the lore, read notes, explore, collect etc. A show's world building can be subtle or blunt, either way it's spoon fed to viewers in doses the show runners control.

Two things last of could of done was 1 have the show focus on what happened in between the stories or B have the show focus on other people in the last of us world like how there was different walking dead games or shows(if the shows were done right)

I didn't think it was a bad stand alone story. It should have been released separately as a movie, but it didn't fit in with the tone or plot of the show and was completely out of place and unnecessary.

The contrast ist very important and the fact that there is no danger is because there are years after the infection... The most infected people aren't able to walk. They grow with time together! I felt this same way about the show. So much filler. Also that whole episode 3 was just so misplaced. I felt like we were just starting to get to know the main characters and it was a total detour that shouldn’t have been that early in the show. Maybe if it was a mid-season episode it would’ve worked better.
I stopped watching after episode 3. Saw that as useless filler. Not needed for the story. But how you presented this, would have made me want to watch the whole series. However, it was not made that way and The Last of Us was like Walking Dead for me. Reached a point and said, "Nope, not for me, you lost me." And I moved on.

Or counterpoint, make the show a little longer. Then the filler wouldn't be such an issue and you could fix the pacing by adding more. Also 4-6 infected scenes sprinkled around would have made their threat seem 10 times greater. Like 2 where they have to hide and let the zombies go past and 2 where they have to sneak past the zombies. Even in the Bill and Frank episode you could have had a scene Early on that shows him systematically clearing the area of infected and maybe digging some kind of trap like a zombie most that would also keep raiders away. 2 thirds in we have a breach, maybe some raiders try to get through but attract the infected and killed. Then that episode would have felt like a mini movie with it's own pacing and while it still wouldn't have been directly relevant it could have helped with the world building.
Agree about the pacing, and the filler but the acting was done well. They should have done a shot for shot remake. I enjoyed the show. Being a fan of the game so I’m bias.

Amen. It's just The Road by Cormac McCarthy but nowhere near as good. I feel like when it came out people praised it but acknowledged how it was an old cliche, nowadays people treat it like it changed gaming and storytelling forever somehow despite not really doing anything different.

Doesn’t it seem like John Wick and the Wanted comics/graphic novel take place in the same universe, with (maybe) 20-30 years between JW and Wanted? JW being the prequel and Wanted being the years later side.

I didn't think it was a bad stand alone story. It should have been released separately as a movie, but it didn't fit in with the tone or plot of the show and was completely out of place and unnecessary.

The contrast ist very important and the fact that there is no danger is because there are years after the infection... The most infected people aren't able to walk. They grow with time together! That's why they aren't soo much infected people around.

I felt this same way about the show. So much filler. Also that whole episode 3 was just so misplaced. I felt like we were just starting to get to know the main characters and it was a total detour that shouldn’t have been that early in the show. Maybe if it was a mid-season episode it would’ve worked better.
I stopped watching after episode 3. Saw that as useless filler. Not needed for the story. But how you presented this, would have made me want to watch the whole series. However, it was not made that way and The Last of Us was like Walking Dead for me. Reached a point and said, "Nope, not for me, you lost me." And I moved on.

Or counterpoint, make the show a little longer. Then the filler wouldn't be such an issue and you could fix the pacing by adding more. Also 4-6 infected scenes sprinkled around would have made their threat seem 10 times greater. Like 2 where they have to hide and let the zombies go past and 2 where they have to sneak past the zombies. Even in the Bill and Frank episode you could have had a scene Early on that shows him systematically clearing the area of infected and maybe digging some kind of trap like a zombie most that would also keep raiders away. 2 thirds in we have a breach, maybe some raiders try to get through but attract the infected and killed. Then that episode would have felt like a mini movie with it's own pacing and while it still wouldn't have been directly relevant it could have helped with the world building.

Agree about the pacing, and the filler but the acting was done well. They should have done a shot for shot remake. I enjoyed the show. Being a fan of the game so I’m bias.
Indeed so much filler, almost no action and just so boring at many times. Sure some of the relationships and human moments were good but just way too much and a bit woke. Its an okay series but not really that interesting to be a IMDB top 250 list. I find it weird so many loved it. It was just okay and meh
