I had 4 more ideas that I didn't add because this video was taking way too long to make already. 2 of them were about Mills, Somerset and John Doe being a religious trinity and Somerset and JD were an angel and Devil on Mills shoulder. Another was that this was like the movie Cell (2000) and they were inside of JD's mind trying to find out where he left victims in real life. The last one was comparing the movie to a Chess game because of the chess opening codes hidden in the intro credits (D35 and C24). Too much technical stuff in all of those.
I loved this video so much. Although one correction: The victim from the LUST crime is not a punishment for the prostitute but for the guy who hired her while being married
You could add that most of the murders fit in with The Riddler theory when you remember that for every sin (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride) there is a corresponding virtue (Chasity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, and Humility) . The first victim was Gluttony, John Doe gave him a test that he didn't know the question to. He could eat until his stomach exploded or he could have refused to eat and John would have killed him but he would have unknowingly chosen Temperance. All the victims final act's would have been the sin they were guilty of, or the corresponding virtue. You'd have look deep into scenes but you could see the the virtues were always there (at least in john's mind) they just had to guess right.
I really enjoy your work. That last theory about Somerset being the orchestrator of the killings in Se7en is awesome. And you're right about the different Jokers, too. I did not like Leto's Joker, but Ledger's Joker is much more a Riddler-type than the "real" Joker. The perspective shift helps me appreciate his performance much more.
I love this movie. I remember going and seeing it in the theater before I left for Bootcamp. It's a stretch and I like where your head is at. I really enjoy your alternative prospective and theories on films. Outside the box thinkers. The world needs more like you. Keep cranking them out man. Loyal sub right here .

Movies like these always give us a great villian. And it's great to get more from them in other movies but they don't always turn out to be worth it. I've always love Mr. Brooks. His character is a big unknown with most people but really good.
Damn. The last min of this was a mind blowing revelation! I never would have even thought Sommerset to have set up this whole thing as a theory. Wow. If only this amount of thought would go into movies today. Great job on this one! Seven is a CLASSIC!
Hell yeah Se7en: Gotham city before Batman John Doe is essentially a compisite Batman villain Riddler (testing the detectives as a game) Victor Zsas (nihilistic killer) Holiday Killer (substitute holidays with the sins)

Doesn’t the scene where Mills chases JD and gets shot in the leg have quick camera cuts between JD and Somerset and they’re dressed relatively the same? It’s been a minute since I’ve seen the movie.
@Niŋin turdl已 woah wait, you’re telling me Somerset has a limp too! Definitely going to have to but I mean, that’s another strange little thing they got in common
So I just found your channel & I just wanted to say WOW I am so impressed by your critical thinking into all your theories on it seems all of your videos but especially this one ❣️ I'm an instant fan..
Minor nitpick: Last lines from Spacey was that she begged for her life and that of her unborn child. I love the Dantes Inferno theory, great out of the box thinking. Just discovered your channel, and I like you spin and analysis.
Made me think of Tom Cruise in Collateral (West Coast) and how Minority Report (Future) could also expand the Gotham-type ante-hell level universe. But to stay on your awesome work, remember how even the DVD was cased in a diary. In my opinion, those were the most significant. A lot of details and dialogue were provided - as you mentioned, with Somerset guiding the viewer/reader once they found JD’s lair. Or was it Somerset’s? 🤔 Or many accomplices? The evidence just became readily available, almost on purpose, to be examined and studied for generations - as JD mentions as one of, if not, his main goal - to have a cult following. Food for thought, indeed.
Your theories are very interesting! I've got another theory that you haven't covered. It is all to do with John Doe's speech in the car 'I'm setting the example and what I've done is going to be puzzled over, studied and followed forever'. What if the Envy Sin was not fully completed intentionally and purposefully, with JD's meticulous work being rumbled by someone like Detective Mills, leading to JD's Pride being the Sin he ultimately succumbs to and most importantly, being too Prideful to admit it. What if JD planned for someone to follow his example after his death, as he was no longer worthy, to complete the arc of Envy being the final Sin. I made a concept trailer to support this theory on my channel. Let me know what you think! 👍 Keep up the great work, loving your videos!
I like the theory that Somerset was the mastermind. It actually makes a little more sense within the confines of the movie. Take it a step further, Somerset being retired would give him more time to plan things. Somerset, is the mastermind behind Jigsaw. Just saying.
There is the question of how John Doe found out who and where to find Tracy. Tracy speaking secretly to Somerset. Somerset never telling Mills of their conversation. There was no indication that Doe could have known about Mills and Tracy or any established evidence showing this after the fact. There is only one person who could have been jealous of Mills and Tracey’s life together. Especially with the knowledge of the unborn child. In a film where every single sin has a logical motive for the murder by Doe, the only ones that do not were wrath and envy. Further, Somerset quotes Hemingway, "Ernest Hemingway once wrote 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part." Yet he did nothing to stop the cops from taking Mills in cuffs. These are cops, when have they not ever protected their own? Somerset needed Doe dead.
This analysis hit me like Darth Vader telling Luke he's his father. I remember seeing Se7en and The Usual Suspects at the cinema and noting the similarity between Spacey's characters in both. I didn't (couldn't?) make anything of it at the time but it's stayed with me ever since. Your whole Somerset angle is a true eye-opener though. It never occurred to me. Bravo.
I am so glad you are back. I didn't get notifications for your most recent videos for some reason and am trying to catch up. I absolutely love your channel, and this video is fantastic. I do want to give a little constructive criticism, though. When you say that Pride is the only victim that is guilty of her sin, I would argue that this is incorrect, specifically because of the scene near the end of the film where John Doe is taking the two main characters to the "big surprise." He explains his perspective on why some (maybe all; it has been a minute since I've watched the movie) of his victims are guilty: the prostitute spreads sexual immorality, disease, etc. by catering to the lust in her clients and society, thereby promoting and encouraging such behavior. The lawyer is a corrupt defense attorney, using underhanded means to get guilty criminals acquitted, choosing wealth over the pursuit of justice. Gluttony was guilty from John Doe's perspective just for being morbidly obese...and perhaps due to eating habits he observed (not sure on this). Anyway, that's just my two cents. I hope it at least adds to your intellectual process. You do great work, and I am always excited when I see you have new videos!
So, if Keyser Soze is John Doe, is it possible that Mills is Tyler Durden? After losing his wife and going through the inevitable investigation into the death of Doe, Mills imagines himself as some pencil pusher until his violent past intrudes into the fantasy. All the personality types he gets close to during the events of Fight Club mirror the victims of the murders in Seven.
"Somerset was the mastermind." Mind. Blown. I'll have to re-watch it, but dang that would be perfect - 1. It gives him a pseudo-glorious moment. 2. It follows the trope of good cop turning bad (or going crazy) at the end of his career. 3. He clearly steered Mills in every step of the investigation, from giving him the correct literature to (essentially) goading/tricking him to illegally enter the apartment. 4. He might even have been doing it to show the city what true evil looked like in hopes of the people improving themselves; he even says it in his last narration/quote: "The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. I agree with the second part." So he murdered seven people in this fight he says is worth it. Brilliant analysis, man!
John Doe said "I know you" to summerset, because he's the paparazzi they encountered. When he says "he didn't know," its not because he knew summerset knew, he was simply gloating that he knew & mills didn't. He needed mills to be the one to inflict their wrath, because it needed to be someone that knew if they killed him, John doe wins, but do it anyway. Summerset begged for Mills to be removed from the case, so he couldn't have been planning on using him. John Doe was envious of Mills, because mills saw on the ugliness in the world and still found the ability to love. Its easy to create theories if you ignore the facts of the movie. You're more impressive when you create theories that don't require ignoring parts of the film. You do this all the time, so keep being impressive.
