Personal Flotation Device. Its a smaller cut down version of a life jacket which are to big and bulky to use safely on a Kayak. Never go out without your PFD on

I clean my gear with water, vinager, and I oil my gear after every fishing trip. I use 3 n 1 oil not wd40, it tends to gum up. clean and if necessary I have at times have to boil water to clean my reels, tools and spool.

My mom wouldn"t let me drill holes either, so i velcrowed it and wired the transducer to a hatch. I also velcrowed the transducer to the botttom. As far as the battery goes, use a cigerrette lighter that they have in cars.

@tonyel120 if your rods are inside the kayak they will just bounce around a bit, sure damage can happen but not nearly as bad as if they were dumped into the water.

It's generally a bad idea to simply have things leashed when launching or landing in the surf. Leashes can wrap around arms legs or your neck and cause real problems. It is best to have your gear buttoned down as securely as possible or better still stowed below when both launching and landing.

I learned my lesson last week. I lost a 300 dollar penn reel on a choppy day in the gulf of Mexico, as soon as I got home I ordered a leash for my other rods and my paddle, better safe than sorry.
