Don't Make this Anchor Trolley Mistake Kayak Fishing

- A big wave is about to hit... the anchor snags violently on the bottom in strong current ... or even a nice fish is about to wrap around the anchor line .. don't grab frantically for a knife and hope you can cut the line (or your trolley) in time - just connect the anchor to the boat the correct way! Two weeks ago, I attended a seminar where the guide related a story. He was fishing in his kayak, and the anchor snagged, pulling the boat over. He said he was able to grab his knife and cut the anchor trolley free since he could not reach the anchor line. Really??? If a guide can make this mistake, others can as well. Do it the right way!

should add to that also rigging the anchor to trip. so if it does get caught tight you can also recover it easily.

Hmmm. What you may want to consider is putting a small float on the end of your anchor line . Leaving the float end on the outside of the anchor trolley (the same as your anchor) thread a loop through the trolley and back to a cleat. I use a jam cleat as it's super fast to unhook. To untie, just pull the rope out of the jam cleat and let the loop pass through the trolley and you're free of the anchor yet it's easy to retrieve because of the float on the end.
Exactly right. That is what I do. I swapped out the cleat I had for a jam cleat a few months ago. Perfect solution since I do not have to do the slip knot any more.

Yep. I learned this the hard way on the New River in VA. My canoe almost dumped before I could cut the line.

Great and important video. This is exactly what I've done since day one. Methods besides a slip knot can lead to the rope not being able to be released due to tension on the rope (this way is also extremely quick). I also use the zip tie reverse method (can't remember the name) for tying the anchor to the rope so I can unstick it. Safety first! Thanks for posting.

As a river fisherman I like this tip. I switched from a 10' sink where I could anchor 360 from cockpit to NW Slayer 13. I had to go to an anchor trolley even though I knew the dangers of anchoring in current. Very good solution. I've also seen the anchor line stretch out like a bow string out of reach.
I almost flipped my canoe on the New River using it just tied off. I love the slip knot now!
Thanks for posting this and highlighting an important use of the trolley. Many of the anchor trolley systems I see in use make it difficult to detach in an emergency situation, as the anchor is clipped to a ring and moved to the front or back putting the anchor line out of reach. As a result, you are forced to move the trolley ring back to the cockpit in order to unhook. This can be difficult when under tension or in a very fast manner. I’ve never used an anchor trolley yet, but I intend to install and use one in this manner for fishing small rivers. Thanks.

That was an excellent tip. If you are in some running water, the chance of an anchor getting fouled and you getting your kayak swamped is a real danger.

Anchoring from the side of any vessel is a mistake you can drop a bow anchor and face the currents. You will have to use your paddle to control a passing boat wake. Many will not slow down for kayaks or canoes and some of those boats produce one hell of a wake so; you’ll have to learn how to use your paddles to keep level.
If you are anchored on the side and you experience a huge wake or tidal change or tidal surge; you are going over.
Glad I found this info. The last thing anyone wants is to capsize and be in a very dangerous situation. Many kayakers do not wear their PFD's and drown. I also have a floating seat cushion. Thank you so much. Happy fishing.

Great tip!I anchored in deep water, in strong current, had my boat positioned wrong.Next thing you know, I was swimming. The current rolled me.Well I had my anchor connected wrong, and couldn't get to it.I am definitely going to use this system!
That almost happened to me as well when I was in my canoe a few years ago - and that caused me to adopt the slip knot. I did not use the trolley correctly when I first got my yak - for some reason, my dealer did not explain this when I bought the yak. Guess they figure everyone already knows it.

I noticed this is as being an issue the other day while using my stake out pole through my trolley anchor ring. Being able to release and adjust anchors quickly is super important. Thanks for the tip.
+mike follmer Wow... good point on the pole ... I use mine through the anchor ring as well. I need to think about that and try and come up with a solution that does not add clutter.
What I did to fix that problem was tie off a piece of string to the middle of the stake. Then run that through the hoop then tie it off to your cleat. After that you can position your yak however you want. The only downside is that if you hook a fish and swims around you it will tangle on your stake. So what I do is I release the line once I see it's a big fish that can snag around it. Hope it helps. If anyone comes up with a better solution let us know. Tight lines and be safe.

That seems like the most common sense way of using an anchor trolley. I use a carabiner instead of a solid ring on my trolley so I can get the anchor line into it via the spring loaded opening and I don't have to thread the end of the anchor line through it- I have my line wrapped around a side-winder line reel-I don't want all that loose line laying at my feet. And I use a zig-zag cleat
I like the carabiner for easy setup! Good point on the loose line as well!
After looking at things, I just clipped a carabiner to the solid anchor trolley ring (I did not replace the ring with the carabiner). It should work just as good though and I can pull the ring/carabiner to whichever end of the yak I want it-then lever lock it in place. There are more ways to tie an anchor line to a trolley system than you can shake a stick at!

I fish mostly ponds so not really an issue, but for rivers this is great advice to have a way to unleash fast. Carrying a knife is an option but then you lose the anchor.

I had mine out once on my local river musky fishing the big lures pull a kayak every which way floating down stream, i found out turn around and face upstream that big musky lures will allow you to slow drift and keep the kayak straight and not have to used a anchor! Cast side to side in a small river and you can pretty much cover the whole river at a nice slow pace

Truth! And I use paracord for an anchor line so I added a small fishing float so i can recover my line and anchor. Have had to disconnect the anchor a couple of times...it's important.

Great information. Even better, install a quick release and attach it to your seat leg so it's in reach. The quick release gives you an immediate access and release without having to drill holes and install a cleat. With your system you have to wrap it around the cleat, tie a slip knot, pull on the knot and hope the knot releases without slowing your reaction time and release down. Make it easier with a quick release clip. Just a thought for those of you looking for an easier way. Be well y'all.

I had to cut my anchor trolley off today when fighting a tarpon. The para cord went underneath my kayak in deep water, could not retrieve it. To avoid a hot mess, I cut it away.
At least I landed the tarpon. Definitely going to use this trick next time, thanks!

Thanks for the tip. Question, if you are fishing shallow, how to you set up your anchor line? Do you let all 25 ft out? What method do you use to shorten that up because you still want the quick release - correct? Thanks in advance.
The quick release works regardless of the amount of line. The USCG recommendation is to use 5 to 7 feet of anchor rope for every foot of depth. That allows the anchor to bite properly and hold the boat.

I just tie on a buoy to the anchor line and attach it to the trolley via carabiner. Then if I need to cut loose I just unhook the carabiner and return to my anchor later and reattach the carabiner to the trolley.

I think it all starts with the anchor trolley. That requires a lot of space to manage and forces clutter to the other side. Anchor goes on one side, fish finder o the other to balance. Good idea for a video! I'll make one. Thanks!

I am new and curious. I seem to see most people mounting their anchor trolley system to the left side of the kayak (as you're sitting in the seat). Is that fairly standard side? I am right handed.

Thanks. You are a wealth of information! I gave it some thought and decided to mount the trolley on the right side. On my car top carrier I have it on left side of vehicle. Therefore my kayak is in that rack on its left side. Can't put an anchor trolley on that side then. Haveta put some forethought into it. In the Army they taught us the Rule of 5 P's. I'm not sure if he did it or not but it's a good idea to attach a small floaty to the line so you can see where your anchor is after you detach. Just make sure the floaty is tied on past the trolley

Great tips on the trolley system I will use but my only issue is impressionable people/kids watching are now thinking it's OK to go out alone with no life jacket on based on what they see in this video. We're going to just pretend you have one of those inflatable PDF's under your long sleeve shirt because if you flip that's whats going to save your life no matter what. Keep those hacks coming and GL out there on the water!
You are correct, I should have had my PFD on when doing this video even though I was next to the shore. I think I recorded a few others this day as well in the same 'attached to the shore' location.

I know this is a older video but you can add a float to your anchor for ease of retrieval later , makes cutting it lose even more of a good idea

Any system that lets you change your angle will work fine. The key is to avoid the mistake in the video!
Since buying your Coosa have you kept the Native? How do/ did you like the Native and if you no longer have it are you pleased with the decision to sell it? I own a SOT paddle kayak now but the Native Ultimate has always intrigued me. Thanks Sir.
I sold the Native to offset the cost of the Coosa and do not regret selling it for an instant. Although it had plenty of internal storage, it is basically a cut down canoe. Any water that gets inside stays inside until you mop it up. Additionally, it was not really recoverable if it flipped.

It might also help if you tied a small float to the anchor rope in such a way that it stays with the rope when released as you have displayed.

but how to recover it when its now at bottom with the rope at bottom also. dont you need some float also attatched to the anchor rope so when you quick release it its floating and then you can recover it?
Yes, if you look at the video, I do have a float attached. The only way to recover it if you do not rig it this way is to pivot your kayak downstream of the current to allow the trolley to come back to the top.
I have a 15 lb flat anchor. Is that ok to use? Or is it too big? I have no idea where to put it in my boat
I think 15 is overkill, but if you can get it in and out of the kayak, I do not see why it would not work
I'd just tie a "cleat hitch" on the cleat rather than a slip knot. It's made for exactly that purpose, of safely releasing a loaded line and it's super fast to tie once you get the hang of it.

The issue will be to work the anchor around your outrigger. The only thing I can think of is to do something like my buddy did in this video (th-cam.com/video/iNqDlqyA7yM/w-d-xo.html) and move the anchor attachment around the outrigger. One point on the video... like I said in this one, be sure you run the anchor line through the loop to attach to the kayak.

That's why you put a quick release rig to it with some type of float or a small buoy at one end to retrieve it later . Another thing that will help so your trolley line doesn't fall to the bottom of the hull. Keep your line snug when it's sagging like that. There is plenty of adjustment to tighten it up a little. Add a pad eye near your bow and stern, which I noticed you do not have. It helps everything to stay above the water line.
Attention to detail is important.Just my 2 cents worth.
Exactly right. That is why I recommend people tie off using a slip knot in the video. You also hit on the other key - have a float on the line so you can come back to it. At the end of the video, you can see the one I use, and I show how to make it in a different video. The point on the pad eye is interesting, and I will have to check out how that would work with my commercial trolley as opposed to a DIY one that would have built in slack. Thanks!
Np. pad eyes are not a problem you just have to undo your line to run it through. When installing make sure you angle them in a wee bit so the bottoms are angled towards midship. I'm sure there would be a video somewhere by a professional yak installer for trolley systems. Any how just to let ya know not trying to be a smart ass. Just a couple of minor details I had noticed, to pass on a couple of helpful tips to a fellow yaker.

Several questiins. How long is your rope? If i have 50-100ft. How do I store it ? then when I relese it Do you have crab trap float or dog trainer on it to keep it afloat? Sorry 63 cancer patitient trying ti figure everything, before i buy. looking for a used peddle yak due to not working in over a year. Sure aren't many blems or used peddle yaks out there.
The Coast Guard says you should use an anchor rope that is 3 times the depth. Mine is about 25 feet since I fish shallow all the time. Yes to the float. In the video, you can see the blue thing. Funny about the used yaks.... seems like folks use them until they crack apart or... if put on Craigslist, go quickly. I was lucky to get mine used. I just happened to be at the kayak store when they got it in. If your kayak store also sells used kayaks, ask them to call you when they get a model in. You can do quick research and then call them back to confirm you are interested enough to come in to look at it.
Be sure you buy a yak with a good seat! Sit in it and paddle it before you commit.
I visit NMB/MB frequently. Any prospects catching fish at the mouth of the “swashes “ along that section of the beach.
I have not fished there. Up here, the beach has random productivity since there is no structure to hold fish.
