  • In this video I talk about my vintage P20 pioneer chainsaw and then show it in action. I use it to cut down a tree and then use our Farmall cub tractor to pull the tree out. I also show how I use a sawbuck to process the tree into firewood for the homestead.

    My uncle there in Port Angeles always would send me out with the Pioneer farm saw as he has a 160 acre farm when I was a kid! I remember them running good but heavy as hell! Good stuff as always!

      Early chainsaws were big and heavy for sure. The 1964 Homelite XL-12 was the game changer that got the saw industry on the path to smaller, lighter saws. Almost all saw companies copied that saw.

      Pioneer saws were absolutely some of the best saws ever made, especially the bigger ones. Check out some of my older videos, and you will see my P50 in action.

    Fun fact at least for me. My dad's cousin Ray Pitre owned IEL back in the 1950s. He sold it to OMC in 1956.

    Your saw cut good for an older saw i like it . I,d like to start collecting pioneer saw if I come across one i,I, hold on to it.I really didn't know that much about them, I think the state of Michigan used them in the 70s .A Firend pick one up at a state action it was a monster well used and heavy.

      Pioneer saws were one of the best when they were on the market place. The main drawback to owning one, is that parts availability is very poor, as they went out of business a long time ago. If you find a good one and take good care of it, you will be happy with the performance and durability.

      I started with McCullochs and later ended up with some Pioneers. The Pioneers are the equal of the Macs in power and durability, but parts are not easily found and most dont have the overiding oiler that nearly all Macs have. Both are used and enjoyed on our homestead.

    You need to warm up every saw. I normally carry four saws on a cutting job and crank them up and leave them idling on the ground with the chain break on. I let them warm up a minimum of five minutes before I use them, according to the outside temperature. If they have a winter/summer shutter I make sure it is in the correct position for the outside temperature.

  • @Indeewoods
    @Indeewoods 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice. I just picked up a couple old Pioneers. A 2073 and a 14-20. Both need work but cool old saws.
    You should richen up your low jet there to get rid of that bog. It sounds like it’s running a bit lean even once warmed up and richening the L jet should smarten it up unless it doesn’t want to idle after it warms up then I guess you’ll have to leave it lean. 40 year old crank seals can make saws do funny things as far as idle goes.
    Will probably help in the hot weather as well they need that extra fuel to run cool.

    • @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
      @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This saw has fixed jets in the carb, and under some conditions it runs a little off because of air temperature and the amount of moisture in the air. In this video, it is experiencing carburetor iceing. This saw doesnt like hot weather, and vapor locks also, so between 45 to 55 degrees it runs pretty good. It idles fine, so the cranks seals seem to be OK. Good finds !

    I have two Pioneer 1200 A saws. Do you still use 16/1 fuel oil ratio as it states in the manual

    • @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
      @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With modern oils, 16 to 1 is too much oil. I use different oil to gas ratio's based on what type of work I am doing with a vintage saw., and the type of oil I am using. If you are doing just average cutting, you could use 32 to 1 if using a top quality partial synthetic 2 stroke oil. Do not use full synthetic oils in old saws. I would recommend ECHO Red Armor oil. It is the best oil I have used. If you are doing heavy cutting, especially in hot weather, use 20 to 1.

    I just purchased a 1074 pioneer for $10.Got to get it working better and need to find a air filter cover for it .BTW why the mat? I cut my trees down at the bottom ,i have been cutting wood for 40 years,never went in the woods with a mat

    • @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
      @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try CUSTOMCHAINSAWPARTS in Washington state. They usually have them. I used a mat in this area because the ground was wet from heavy rainfall prior to me cutting I use the mat becuase I am a weenie, and dont want to get wet and muddy. I cut my trees a couple of feet off the ground, as I seem to do a better job of aiming the tree, as I am not a pro logger. Thanks for watching.

    Very nice saw, I have one too, I want to put a 20 inch bar, will it work normally?

    • @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156
      @mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These saws were rated for using up to a 20 inch bar, but I think that they are a little under powered for that, especially with an aggressive chain. What type of wood is something else to consider. In hardwoods, a shorter bar would work best, and in softwoods, a 20" bar should be fine. It is easier to find the shorter bars than the longer ones.

      @@mrobsoletesvintagehomestea9156 Thank You! I mostly have birches, spruces and pines, but I need a longer rail so that I can cut the tree into logs so that I don’t have to bend or squat, I want to cut while standing upright.
