This is probably one of my proudest creations yet. While the video might simplify the process, it took nearly 30 hours of 3D design in SolidWorks CAD to finalize the design. Building the prototype took hundreds of hours of labor. But it was all worthwhile to see the end result. A fully functional, real life expandable Captain America shield -- THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!

omg i remembered being inspired by this so much 2 years ago, i made a wooden version. I was 10 at the time. I used a piece of wood i found in our backyard and just sawed it to shape. Stole some paint from my grandfathers garage and finally used an old belt to strap your arm in place. Hacksmith is the best!!!

I don't know why people think it cant be a good shield because of its size. Smaller shields are easier to maneuver, making them easier to carry. Also, if you're skilled enough, they can be just as effective as larger shields, but give you more agility.
Ikr. In the medivel era some shields were even smaller. They were used for parrying and stuff like that.
David J i guess it depends on what you 2ant to use it for. Viking shields were big to cover light armoured troops in a wall like function. The small buckler parrying shields were meant for more 1v1 duels.

Make it thinner and you've essentially just got a buckler with stabby parts. Awesome!
Militaries use rifles, which shoot bullets that are way faster and harder hitting than a standard 9mm so it would probably go through the shield
1 inch ~= 25mm
No 5.45 round in the world can go through 25mm of steel. Extremely modern AP rounds for 7.62 might be able to, but it's a stretch. It's not until you get to .50 cal weaponry that achieving 25mm of perforation becomes feasible.

Everywhere but the center is only 1/4 inch, and the shield is a lot heavier and more award than an ar500 steel insert.
I'm not saying it's good. Just saying that it would work to some degree. Obviously there's a reason why modern militaries don't equip their troops with shields anymore.
