Kongo was wracked by instability that had been exacerbated by the Portuguese presence, but the latter was not all powerful. Portugal did suffer military defeats at Kongolese hands, notably the Battle of Mbanda Kasi in 1623. Portugal's attempt to conquer Kongo in 1670 resulted in a crushing defeat that stifled Portuguese ambitions in the region for the next 200 years. Only when the Portuguese adopted advanced weaponry in the 19th century were they able to successfully colonize Kongo and its neighboring kingdoms.

If you look at the history of colonization across Africa, Asia and the Americas, you quickly find that the Europeans weren't these great fighters who conquered inferior people, they were just good at causing social disruption that caused the collapse of these civilizations.

@@TIENxSHINHANYep. Thats how the British were able to conquer the Northern realm. the Sokoto Caliphate, that would later become apart of Nigeria. They successfully exploited the mistrust between the Emirs to turn against each other and when the state was at its weakest, they striked. The same kind of thing happened in India too.

I've heard this story before, although the mention of portuguese influence wasn't really mentioned in such detail. I thought 1483 was the first contact date for example. The video didn't go into much detail about the change in power structure, just that once ine king died, his son seized the throne by force, and from then on it was a hereditary monarchy, something your essay seems to contradict somewhat. Saying there was still an electoral process and all (albeit rigged).
One thing that I heard previously that wasn't mentioned here is that the Kongolese had little reason to innovate in any other sector but warfare and slavery, so when European slavery was abolished, their while society collapsed. This was apparently where the real colonialism began.
Not saying that anything in this video is wrong, just that im going to have to do more digging to put the pieces together properly.

Hey, I understand where you coming from. I created this channel to have more conversations like these btw. Most TH-camr are Americans or European and unfortunatly that will sometimes influence the way they tell a story. That is why I (African) made this video about the begin, middle and end of the Kongo empire, keeping the focus on the kings and people inside Kongo and nothing on the outside forces and motives.
Clearly the idea that african societies had little reason to innovate is wrong and sad. The incentives of many African societies changed with slavery but, evolution and innovation did not stop because of it. Glad you liked the video and happy to read your ideas! Here are some of the sources I liked the most while researching for this video. Maybe they help in your research in putting the pieces together as well.

I'm curious as to why one of the kings you cover is not Nzinga a Nkuwu (Joao I) along with his son Nzinga Mbemba? As they were the ones to originally converted the Kingdom of Kongo to Roman Catholicism, thereby strengthening the trade with the Portuguese and increasing wealth of the Kingdom. This conversion is so important to understand, as it led to mass acceptance among people of the kingdom since it was not tied to foreign colonial occupation and also leading the syncretic nature of Christianity in the area giving rise to a distinct form of African Catholicism.

He was warned by the the local priests yet he wouldn’t listen. Kongo Kingdom is the correct term. King Kanga a Nvita defeated the Portuguese at the battle of Ambuila in 1663. There was resistance Mama Kimpa Vita was burned alive with her child because she refused to convert to Catholicism. There is a head of Ne- Mwanda head in the Vatican those evil ppl use for rituals. So before you spew your baseless claims read or ask so you can learn . Nzinga a Mbemba wrote to the pope complaining about the the people who came as missionaries and now were kidnapping people including royal families.
