The largest empire ever from Africa is the Kanem Borno empire. It's so great that it existed over 200 years. Kanem Borno was so big that it took most vassal states a lot of years to know that MAI DUnamabDibalemi the second had died, as all vassals were still paying tributes.

    Cancel the Songhai Empire
    They had slavery
The slave trade was important to the Songhai Empire. They used slaves to transport goods across the Sahara Desert to Morocco and the Middle East. They were also sold to Europeans to work in Europe and the Americas. Slaves were typically captives of war taken during raids of nearby regions.

Your fate wasn’t doomed as under the cruel system of chattel slavery created in the Americas. But calling their empires the greatest of Africa is difficult when you also have to compare the civilizations of Egypt, Carthage, Nubia, Ethiopia, and the entire Sudan. Not to mention the accomplishments of smaller kingdoms that have given us worldwide marvels such as Great Zimbabwe and the Walls of Benin. The continent and its history as a whole is great.
