  • Luthier and Instructor, Robert O'Brien, talks about and demonstrates how to apply a shellac based finish called Royal Lac.
    NOTE: It is no longer recommended to wet sand between coats. The finish needs to be fully cured before wet sanding. This can take up to 30 days. ‍

    Your videos are always the easiest to understand on the web. No one instructs these type videos better!
    When finishing a guitar over several days with shellac are you careful to cover the guitar to keep dust from settling, or does the finish need to breath well to cure? Is a “drying room” necessary?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the compliment. My shellac finishes dry to the touch very quickly. No need to cover them.

    Hi Robbie, I enjoy your Tips du Jour videos. I wonder if you could tell a bit about the bench mounted buffer you used in this video, never seen anything quite like that. What is the buffer wheel itself made of?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Craig Bumgarner I had this buffer made for me years ago while living in Brazil. It spins a bit faster than most buffers but I prefer it that way. The wheels are made of soft flannel. Thanks for watching my videos.

    Hello Robert, another great video. For the sake of honesty in advertising; can we call this finish a French Polish?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  ปีที่แล้ว

      French polish is an application method using the traditional muñeca. This product can be applied by brushing, spraying, wiping or using a muñeca similar to a traditional French polish. Choose your application method and go with whatever works for you. If a traditional French polisher saw this he would probably roll his eyes.

    Nice feature. Few tasks yet on my build but will give Royal Lac a try. Or just French polish. One question..where can I get the one piece clear plastic guard used to protect the Flamenco sound board? All I can find is a two piece guard at Sam Ash. Mike

    Hi Robert! The finish looks lovely. Thank you for sharing it with us.
    Also, would this same finish work on an electric guitar? The Seal Lac and the Royal Lac. Thank you very much.

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this finish would be great on an electric guitar. The manufacturer now also makes a post cat version of this product which means you can level and buff in just a few days.

    • @MisterZavala7
      @MisterZavala7 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OBrienGuitars great! I am willing to use this to my next electric guitar. Just a couple more questions: could I apply the sealer after the water-based dye? (Trans-tint) or any other pruduct you suggest for electric guitar finishing with water based staining?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this finish is compatible over water based dyes.

  • @budandbean1

    Wonderful finish Robert! Thank you for the super video explaining everything. I have a question after everything else. How thick do you think your final finish is? As easy as it still is to sand through it, I would think it's still only around 1 to 2 mil. Does the polish add much, at least a bit of thickness to add some protection? Thank you, Buddy

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Buddy Martin Thank you. The final finish is very thin and comparable to my French polish finishes. This finish offers protection from humidity changes and minor scratches but due to how thin it is applied it doesn't offer much in the way of dent protection. You probably aren't taking your guitar to the beach anyway! haha

    • @budandbean1
      @budandbean1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert, I really thought it was funny when you said that the finish protected against humidity changes. I totally understand... It is amazing that an ultra-thin finish like this can provide such a beautiful and just gorgeous outcome. You really should be proud... Well, you and Royal Lac.

    Would the seal lac serve the same purpose as a 1 lb cut de-waxed shellac as a first sealer coat ? I am trying to apply these concepts on balsa wood for model airplane project. Also, on top of the Seal Lac can I use AquaCoat wood grain filler ? Thank you for your time. - Charles Bovalis

    Hello Mr. O’Brien,
    Would it be ok to string up my guitars 24 hours after the last coat of Royal lac? I noticed the long cure time, but wondered what you thought. Thanks

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, that depends. If you are going to level and buff it to a high gloss I would wait until that is completed. If you just put on a light seal coat then you are probably fine to move forward.

    • @owenlewis8944
      @owenlewis8944 5 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @owenlewis8944

    Hey Mr. O’Brien. I was wet sanding the seal lac before the pore fill and the seal lac slurry was packed into the pores. Now the pores are white and I tried blowing it out with compressed air but wouldn’t come out. What do you recommend?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Applying new coats should disguise this. However, Vijay has revised his instructions on the application method and now recommends to not wet sand.

    • @owenlewis8944
      @owenlewis8944 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I just went ahead and did the pore fill leaving it as was. Got to learn as I go with this stuff.

    When you say clean your brush with alcohol, Do you mean denatured, grain, or what type of alcohol?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any of the types you mentioned will work. I prefer grain alcohol but denatured is also fine.

    Boa tarde O'Brien! Após a lixa de 2500 vc apenas aplica uma cera (wax) espera secar e faz o polimento? Ou seja, depois da lixa 2500 vc não aplica novamente a goma laca, correto? Obrigado!

    • @OBrienGuitars

      isso mesmo. Depois da ulitma lixada voce so passa na politriz para dar mais brilho ou passa cera para um acabamento mais fosco

    Really smelly stuff. Even with a mondo cartridge vapor mask, the glands in my neck got all swollen after using this. Took some time to get better. I didn't find it very easy to work with. I would stick with regular shellac or TruOil.

    Ive used royal lac on my 2015 archtop. It has not failed yet. I applied seal coat first, 2 coats,then applied royal lac with a brush on the first coat ,then applied as normal shellac with a pad like french polish, after that. Multiple coats and very thin. It only builds to a satin sheen. I like this product. Check the guitar here. www.redtailguitars.com
