  • Luthier and Instructor, Robert O'Brien, talks about and demonstrates how to apply a shellac based finish called Royal Lac.

    NOTE: It is no longer recommended to wet sand between coats. The finish needs to be fully cured before wet sanding. This can take up to 30 days.

    Don't think I'd a done that with the lac king but, what a beautiful grained wood that kinda "developed" when you put that finish on. Just beautiful; enjoyed it! 🤘

    Sounds like a variation on traditional violin varnish. The mastic, sandarac and lavender spike oil act as plasticisers. A final oil polish will give the shellac finish a certain amount of waterproofing or moisture resistance.

    I will NEVER go back back to Zinsser. I highly suggest Shellacfinishes Royal Lac and their flakes!

    Great video Robert, always enjoy your skills and thoughts about guitar building and especially finish work (seems the most difficult for me). I also used Royal Laq on my LP solid body build. I’ve noticed that the finish seems to get richer/deeper the longer it sits. Have you had the same experiences?
    I’m building LP Custom now and plan on using Royal Laq again.. it’s SOOO much easier than nitrocellulose and 1000% less smelly.

    Robbie, First off Thank you**** I just bought myself a low speed buffer, Can you tell me what is the product you rub on the buffing wheel to get the shine?? Also why is the buffing wheel orange in color? Thanks again Scott

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I use the Menzerna compounds that I get from LMI. I find that the orange buffing wheels tend to enhance the bass response in my instruments. No really, it is orange because the guy that made it for me used orange flannel.

    Robert, Can you expound on the 30 day wet-sanding text that appears in multiple spots in the video?
    PS: Did that guitar sound as good as it looked?

      The guitar sounded great!! Some folks have reported issues when using water and wet sanding. The manufacturer has isolated the issues to the water so he asked me to to add text saying to not wet sand when using this product.

    Can you also use an old t-shirt for the outside of the polishing pad or do I need a section cut off from an old bedsheet?

    I used Royal Lac to finish a guitar. Got a beautiful glossy finish. A couple of years later the finish started checking. Now it is known that wet sanding the finish with water causes this finish failure. It was not known at the time I finished the guitar. MESSAGE: DO NOT WET SAND ROYAL LAC WITH WATER. If you do, the finish will fail. I just had to remove bridge, neck, pickups, tuners, etc. and completely sand off the Royal Lac to refinish the guitar. I used lacquer this time.

      Probably humidity? Wood movement? Shellac is an organic finish so you know, not like polyurethane or other synthentic finishes

    • @edhaney3523
      @edhaney3523 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@solidsnake9332 Royal Lac has resins added so it is NOT a natural shellac. It is "shellac based".

      @@edhaney3523 just read that up and youre right. Did you seal the wood? If you dont seal the wood the finish can crack overtime due to expansion/contraction. I usually seal with 1/2lb shellac thinned just above 50%

    • @edhaney3523
      @edhaney3523 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@solidsnake9332 Yes I sealed the wood with shellac. If you use WATER to level sand Royal Lac your finish will fail. I posted the above to save people time, money, heartache and embarrassment. If you refuse to take my warning then you can't say you were not warned.

    Which Royal-Lac do you recommend, regular or post-catalyzed? I heard the the latter cures very quickly but is very hard to buff .
    Is your method still valid sanding with the same grit sequences but dry instead of wet or should I use different grits?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on how quick you want the finish to cure. The post cat cures in 3-5 days and is not any harder than other similar finishes to buff. You can set sand or dry sand the finish before buffing.

    Have you compared crystallac to Royal-Lac

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are completely different. Royal lac gives more of a urethane/polyester type finish and cures very quickly, especially when using the catalyzed version. It also has more of a traditional amber type color to it. Both finishes work well and I like the easy cleanup with the water based stuff.
