I watched this with my mouth hanging open. We used to sail a 1979 Southerly 105, and I loved that boat so much, but the new Southerlies are just incredible. Although very happy with our current long-keel 10m lady, I will admit to boat envy after watching this video. So many things that we talked about with our old girl that we'd like to improve, and every single one addresses in the new boat, plus a few we didn't even realise could be improved. Enjoy your beautiful boat, and if you're ever sailing Northern Irish waters, give us a shout.
Paul you looked like a little kid in a candy store with free reign to taste it all. Thanks for the tour! DS3 is amazing! It is great to see all the details that you planed into it and how excited you were to see you new beautiful boat that was almost ready to be delivered! Fair Winds!
I'm a regular of Boot, trying bargains in first windsurfing and more recently kite material. The boats there are so magnificent that you cannot resist the dreaming...until you know the prices. This is like a car show with only Ferraris and similar. Great and frustrating at the same time. Beautiful boat you bought here.
You two turned your passion into a business and ran your business with a passion year after year after year. Enjoy the fruits of your dedication and hard work. Well deserved. Congratulations.
I've been watching you folks since I was a kid (and you were much younger too ;-). So happy/inspired to see how you've lived your dream. So happy to see you getting this upgrade. Gorgeous. Love the very effective "crane shot" at 2:48. Had to watch a couple of times to figure out how you got it. As always, super pro work. You did miss the engine/ transmission room, so I'll need you to show that at some point :-) Very excited for you folks. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you.
LOL glad you've enjoyed our work for so long :-) Yes I plan to do many more features on the mechanical systems now that the systems are almost finished. Kind regards Paul
This a fine, thoughtfully detailed, safe, spacious, elegant, beautiful---- home in " 'outerspace' oceans"! Congratulations! I hope that you both enjoy it, a lot---- FOREVER!!!!+ FIGHT, to stay healthy---- FOREVER!!!!+, so you will always be able to enjoy it!!!!+ P.S.: Big Thank You, for bringing us the delightful, wonderful Boat Show! I never knew it existed! Everyone has to "check this one out"! God Bless You Both!!!!+
We took an 8 day Viking cruise from Switzerland to Amsterdam March 2017 and were in one of the only 2 suites at the stern. Along the Rhine River for 1000km. It was amazing. Europe is amazing. Amsterdam is incredible. We live in Canada and our country has it all wrong. Getting on the water is the best. The canals in Amsterdam are totally cool to ride on and the houseboats were also nice to see. Anne Frank and VanGogh and all the other history makes the place even better. Went thru dozens of locks on the Rhine and could and did touch the lock walls.
Awesome looking boat. I love how excited Paul gets talking about his new “toy”; like kid on Christmas morning 😉. Can’t wait to see this boat out on the worlds oceans.
Enjoyed your update. I am so excited for you guys and look forward to many new vidoes of your new adventures. DS111 looks like a real dream yacht congrats.
Very nice view of the large boats on the Rhein how they “drift” around the bends of the river. Congratulations to your great boat! Always a handful water under the keel!
I watch a bunch of super popular sailing channels...and ... as entertaining as they are... I am going to throw a giant thank-you at you two. You very professional ... extra super pro.
I have always loved the Southerly boats and was very pleased that Discovery picked up the line. Your new boat is beautiful and after watching your videos on its construction I am now convinced I want one for myself. My last boat was a CT47 CC Cutter which was fast, roomy, VERY seaworthy, but the draft at 6 foot 3 inches got me the nick name of "Farmer" in the Pamlico Sound here in North Carolina. As the sand/mud bottom was always shifting and a accidental grounding would happen. I look forward to watching more of your great videos.
Captains! If you need someone on board and scrub the boat in exchange for all these fun and learn the knots, let me know once the kids are in college I will join you. Thanks for sharing, beautiful boat.
That is a beautiful boat! 2:31 - that is bavarian food, when I was in the area Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Cologne the locals, I ask for some typical local food, said such things don't exists. So I got told there is no culture in that area, it was badly destroyed in the last war and in rebuilding it became multiculture. Some locals even told me food as local food that is originated in the countries from where the workers came. So, may this is a place in the middle of Germany where you find something from all over the world, that was my Impression!
Love the hob and the cooker. The aft cabin is fantastic. If I got a monohull I'd want a large aft cabin. The boat is beautiful. But I think I'd still like to get a catamaran. I've worked on the road for so many year, living in a camper. I've learned I want ROOM. I think having room when you're gone on a trip takes a lot, of stress away. But having more room is more to clean! So it is a catch 22 situation. Good luck with your new yacht, and may you have great sailing!
So sweet and just so well thought out. Theres just so much thought that went in to your new baby. I love the location of your wet gear closet for sure thats just such a perfect location and a real time saver not having to worry about getting salt water in your cabin. I'm really happy for the both of you. I've been a following you guys for a few years. You have such love for sailing and how you treat each other its just so refreshing. I look forward to future videos of you and that beautiful wife of yours Discovering this beautiful planet we live in the planet Earth. Congratulations and Thank you.
Good luck with the new boat! Have been following your videos for a year or two now and find them interesting and entertaining. Looking forward to new videos on Distant Shores III!
A beautiful boat ... the fit and finish looks as good as anything I've ever seen. Not sure about the need for twin wheels on a long distance cruiser and you'll have to keep off the beer if you want to keep using that nav station! Congratulations, fair winds and happy sailing to you both!
It hasn't happened yet, Frank, but then we have a rule about always wearing boat shoes. The hatch is an escape hatch in case of fire for the occupants of the aft cabin. It also allows star gazing from bed. ✨
Impressive boat, just came across this channel and watched some of your videos. Very educational, love the tech approach as well. Thank you very much for producing such quality work. A new fan and subscriber..............
Love you guys, love the videos, hoping to follow a similar path of living on a Southerly whilst documenting changes in seagrass and coral on our journey, from which scientists can deliberate as to the best course of action or experiment, through us; and the whole time, encouraging cleaning up the seas as we go. All I need now is a Southerly.
Now that was an awesome way to show a vessel! A great tour Paul and I was overjoyed when you showed us a technical side of your tour. This was the first time I wasn't disappointed by something on a new boat during a tour. This is my dream boat! One thing I would want on that wonderful swing keel is way to mechanically lock the keel in the up position in case a hydraulic bypass leak would start someday. One isn't sailing in to a port with that keel hanging down >10'. I noticed they do have a manual pump in case of a electrical or pump failure. Get them on the stick so we can see her ride the waves ;). Thanks for this tour Paul !!
Hi Ed. Yes there is a method to lock the keel in the up position. You can pump it up with the manual and then put the pin in. I will demonstrate it when we get her in the water - good suggestion!
I would also want to be able to lock it in the down position, and (preferably) in intermediate positions, in case of inversion. In the case of the hydraulics failing altogether, If necessary you could bring the keel up, I guess, by taking a bridle to the stern and winching half way up, then rigging another bridle from amidships and winching the rest of the way up.
Great presentation and congratulations on your new boat! I wouldn't change a thing except those vertical windows in the aft cabin -they just have to be horizontal.
awesome. more geek out videos please. looking to see what communication gear you install and what other options you put on the boat. and cant wait to go to this show next year.
Hey Hi Rick!! Yes we'll be back in the Caribbean by Christmas so must plan to meet up. I've been admiring your Grenada race video especially the drone shot of the beginning!
Great video, love seeing Dusseldorf and the grosse Schweinhaxe! Pretty incredible boat show. DS III is beautiful! Loved the technical details and nerd-out. Christine found the stern thruster exciting! Nice bow seats. Love the big lockers. Nice video. Cheers from sv Echoes.
I’m speechless. Wow, she is gorgeous! I’m new to the channel so maybe you’ve done it already, but I would love to watch a longer “tour” after you start sailing her. I’m so happy for you guys, I know the excitement feeling. Although in other area however, the feeling is the same I guess. Fair winds
Must be hard walking about not yet in the water. Saw you talking to Brian & Karen from Delo's between your travels an theirs it's going to be a great season.. Carry-on
Tune out if you don't want to see the technical stuff? No way. That's what I'm here for. I love yacht design. It's so interesting to me how different yards/architects approach the balanace of safety (to me the most important factor), usability, comfort & performance. I'm not a saior. The only way I'd ever be able to learn to sail & own a boat, is if I win the lottery. I've just found your channel. Lots and lots of content to view :) Can I ask why you chose the Southerly over any of the other yachts available? What it the fact that it's a centerboard? Stay safe in these horrible times.
DITTO, Captain Rick Moore. Just a lovely craft !! Love the special go-over of the cooker and hob at the end. Took notes on that piece of equipment. 👍👌👊✨🥂✨⛵️⚓️🍷✨ Captain Dick Chassé

She's a beauty! Congratulations and thanks for giving us all a tour. Lovely boat bling. Is that dyneema I see for lifting keel? Smart. Looking forward to your adventures a few months. Absolutely gorgeous! And Paul, your "nerding out" was a blast to watch. You're like a kid in a candy store. Enjoy your new home. Fair winds!
Thanks Heather - we'll shoot more on those "nerdy" lines!

That is one beautiful yacht. She'll help you drift right into the golden years. Enjoy !!
Congratulations to you both. She is stunning and very well appointed. It's Steph and Lori here, can't wait to be on her!

Skipper, I concur! Most likely the best sailing channel on YT.
