We can confirm firsthand that lightning damage can be extensive, even with a properly grounded boat. Lightning will find its own path to ground despite your best efforts to the contrary. We were struck 10nm south of Nassau in April 2016 and it destroyed all the electronics on the boat as well as caused delamination of the carbon fiber at the top of the D2s. It exited the boat down the backstay and out the hydraulic backstay adjuster, despite having a lightning rod and 6AWG wire to ground. the only electronics which survived were the handheld items- iPad and handheld radio and GPS which were placed in the microwave. Charger, inverter, and all lights were fried. Fortunately, were were able to travel by day back to Stuart, FL where we replaced the mast, standing rigging and all the electronics. Months after repairs were completed and we had spent the summer cruising, we also required a replacement of the engine wiring harness and panel. It pays to have good insurance.

That's why I love the boating community so much. They catch extra fish & then give it away to some one in need/wants.

I was sailing a 54 foot Van Disdat steel round bige yacht with a wooden mast & galvanised rigging in an electrical storm in Hawk bay NZ . A bolt came down directly above me hit the mast head then veird off & landed 3 meters away with a hell of a bang, load of steam ,No damage luckily just my underpants ,Oh by the way i was single handed , stayed in port for a couple of days after that.Love that shallow draft system , Amazing, Well engineered.

Great information on the swing keel (variable-draft) Southerly Yachts. They look pretty cool! That cast iron cradle it sits looks super strong. Great video of veteran cruisers hanging out. To think you both were doing this some 24 years before it got real popular on You-Tube about 6 years ago is super cool. You are amazing. I also enjoyed watching the sailing tips by Patrick Childress on his channel. That old salty sea dawg and his lovely wife Rebecca have learned a thing or two these past 40+ years sailing as well. Look forward to watching more and seeing lessons learned from 30 years of cruising! Fair Winds Distant Shores.

One of my old boats was struck by lightning in 1997, it was a Tanzer 26 and the lightning fried everything including the mast. Upon close inspection the top of the mast had a maze of small holes burned into it. My wind indicator exploded. It was an interesting thing, especially since the whole boat was bonded. Some of the grounding wires also fizzed.

Really, really helpful video. Thank you both once again. Just an extra point on hurricane damage on land. We had a family home in Grenada that was completely flattened by Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. After our insurance claim was settled, we decided to rebuild with a Deltec home which was reputed to be hurricane resistant, since they had not lost a single home to wind or storm surge damage in 40 years. If you know anyone who has lost their property due to Dorian, we strongly recommend looking at Deltec homes from Ashville, North Carolina. They have an excellent website which explains everything and has many videos, some of them showing recent damage in Abaco with a Deltec home still standing in a sea of devastation etc. It took us only 10 days to complete the build of our new house on a prepared concrete slab with the help of three local carpenters, a plumber and a tiler for the bathroom and kitchen final fixing. All the materials arrived pre-cut and ready to assemble in a 40ft container. It is a tough structure and beautiful. So happy with it so far. Tim and Mia Clarke

Wow, the Bahamas look like heaven on earth for trailer yachts . . . Is it truly even possible to shield a yacht from the effects of a lightning strike? We'd love to see a video on how _THAT_ could be done effectively. Lightning would have to be one of the most primal fears for a yachtie - sitting next to the tallest aluminium (or carbon) lightning rod around for kilometres is always . . . _disconcerting_ . . .

I had lighting strike near me on a ‘38 new Beneteau and my autopilot began an annoying alarm while the engine was running. Board had to be replaced - even with grounding electronics don’t like lightning. Turning everything off might have been a good move but I was in a bay and channel at the time

Wouldn't have been enough. The only savior is a Faraday cage (ie microwave). The microwave will be fried but the electronics inside will be saved. Anything outside the Faraday is hooped.

I have never considered a swing keel vessel as I always felt that it is too vulnerable. That said, I find the variable-draft Southerly Yachts a very interesting design. The keel block looks very rugged. Not too comfortable with the unprotected rudders. Thanks for this video and I will be doing more research on this. I am intrigued.

I have seen lighting tracking all the way from New Orleans to Houston.
Flying along a massive storm front this was happening for some good hour.
What you need to know as a sailor is that the lighting needs to have some sort of negative field to discharge
It the balance of electric buildup and sometimes it’s earths soil to be a discharge point
feeders to the leaders they say .. so a lighting may assent true your boat skywards to meet up with lighting form above
If that field is below your boat may is capable to come up it may use your boat to climb.
But in most cases the water where your in is like a “capacitive insulator” It evens it all outs.
It takes a massive amount of energy to discharge true that water layer.
But it will go wrong as is proven many times.
Sailing true it is very difficult to be the hit for lightning strikes but it happens too.
Anchoring has a better chance. I believe that your anchor system with attachment to the for stay will be a perfect lighting rod.
There are test that a headsail is completely roasting up on a hit. But a morning ball with a nylon rope is already a good insulator altho rain can reduce that insulation.
Having a Southerly with the big mental keel system Aes base plate and hovering above a sand plate its more likely to get hit.
So that boat needs very good bonding wires for that mast to the plate.
Thunder and lightening ....For me it means disconnect all antenna to the systems. Wish that your mast is proper wired “bonded” to the keel. Store the electronics in the metal box and Pray to Neptune that he will not stick his pointy rake towards your boat and unbalance the earths negative field. yell to wodan en Thor to stop F’n around.

But do note that it is for this specific type of vessel, designed for "beaching". Unsure if a "standard" swing keeled boat would behave as well and endure the stresses and wear as the Southerlys.

Just subscribed and enjoyed your video. We were hit by lightening in Perth seven years ago, only a proximity strike (water) whilst in the marina but yielded substantial electrical damage which was not evident at the beginning. We were sleeping in the aft cabin where the bronze port lights lit up like a Christmas tree - the lightening entered the boat via the bronze earthing strip around the water line. The electrical boards on the electronics did not give out entirely at first, so it's good to get everything checked out. We had a grounding plate installed after that but it would be good to learn of any other protection advice available to us. Thanks in advance and fair winds.

Caution: they have a boat that is DESIGNED to be grounded often. Some cats and swing keels can do this, but the vast majority of sailing yachts today can't do what a Southerly is designed to do.

I was looking forward to seeing how you got the Southerly off the beach. However, unless I missed it, you didn't show that. Guess I'll just view the video again at a later time...

It was dark so that time we didn’t film it. Basically the high water lifted us off but I agree I need to show it in a video. Coming soon😅

Lift the keel half way going down wind and use a small spinnaker to keep the boat on an even keel....

Would love to hear how you protect yourself from lightening and maybe stories you have heard from other sailors. Just last month, sailing back to Montreal from Lake Ontario, we experienced a "near-lightening strike" (touched down maybe less than 100yds). We lost our VHF, depth sounder and knotmeter. Our newer electronics such as Raymarine tiller pilot and Garmin handheld GPS were unaffected. Actually, the tillerpilot lost power but came back on. Still sorting out with insurance as they want to know if equipment is repairable. One issue that comes up is whether or not the transducers for speed and depth are to be replaced too? Really a nuisance. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. We started watching you guys way back on the T&E cable channel. BY ... before TH-cam 🤓
