One of my absolute favorite rock bass lines ever he was in the zone and he didn’t sound like anybody else. He sounded exactly like him Way to go Ed rock bass legend.
He played but didn't write the bassline. I dont know why, it sounds so simple to play that this song fucking tongue ties my fingers at times with the little tweaks that happen throughout the song and as it builds and becomes more constructed throughout the song.
@@BradyIsAfagInHeatthat's actually not true. Ed King absolutely wrote this specific bass line that you hear on the studio version. This was his attempt to emulate Leon Wilkeson, but Leon never showed Ed how to play his version. So this was Ed's rendition, which is actually VERY different from how Leon played the song. You can hear Leon's bass line on the live album from the Fox Theater in 1976 as well as in the original demo version of the song on the "Skynyrd's First - The Complete Muscle Shoals Album".
@@chipcruey7757 Ed's bass line on this song was miles better than the original version, which was actually written by Larry Junstrom and taught to Leon by him when he left the group. That was also the same bass line that Leon continued to play live whenever the band would perform this song, so Ed's bass line is only listenable here and the only time it was ever played this way. Listen to the demo version of Simple Man and compare it to the studio version here. Ed's bass playing is far more active and worked much better for this track.
@@Dagger_323 Sounds like you know what you're talkin about. I just have always enjoyed Leons approach. You can hear more guitar influence in Eds Bass work. (naturally) But finer Artists wont be found in EITHER case. p.s. have you checked out The Stoned Roadie, Craig Reed ?
@@hi_is_this_clorox_bleach Yep. Leon had briefly left the group during the recording of this song and came back just before the album was published. Ed filled in for Leon here and since he was never taught the original bass line by Leon he came up with his own bass line which was superior to Leon Wilkenson's/Larry Junstrom's version.
If Ronnie was wrong about one thing- it was Ed's bass playing. He was every bit as good as Leon- listen to the octaves and thirds he's using for gods sake.
Reminds a bit of the bass line of Fade to Black with the late Cliff Burton with Metallica , and also because Cliff was a huge fan of Ed King
Ikr
Ed king has so many good bass lines

And HOLY SHIT can we talk about that sound?
Sounds like a Rickenbacker 4001, that growl is unmistakable.
Yeah I'm pretty sure thats a rickenbacker
Ed was amazing on guitar AND bass. Every bit as good as Leon
Ed was a GREAT guitar player! But as Ronnie said, HES NOT A BASS PLAYER.
@@chipcruey7757 I think Ronnie was wrong

Ed was a monster on the low end
Great bass player Ed
Fucking MASTERFUL
"Masterful" Is the perfect word to describe Ed King's guitar AND bass playing prowess
That's Ed King on Bass!
for real?

Well, we can agree Ed played better guitar than Leon.😀

(Which kind of hindered his bass playing)

Ed was the bass player in Strawberry Alarm Clock, so he's a natural here.
I thought he played guitar in Strawberry Alarm Clock...
@@mikestrong4946originally he played bass
Hi. Is Ed King using Flatwounds bass strings? Thanks.
idk i ain't their producer
Doesn’t sound like it to my ears
Don't think so
Hearing this, Ed was better than I expected, even though different from Leon. Now let's hear isolated bass (or anything else) from Freebird.
free bird tracks are already on youtube
This sounds way too trebley.... thats not Ed
Nope, this is absolutely Ed. The version on the final album track is simply mixed different.
