I don't know, it's probably a case of the Wallabies being so inept. I still expect us to struggle against the intensity and class of the All Blacks at Ellis Park.
I am also very thrilled that rugby league is gradually becoming more popular than union in NZ, especially with the younger generation Christchurch will soon have its own NRL franchise which will do wonders for the code's popularity.
I agree with the sentiment that union is boring and archaic with most games decided by penalties and yellow cards.

The Australian sports market has progressively been getting harder for Rugby Union to survive in over the last 20 years. During Australian Rugby Union’s heydays of the 90s and early 00s the AFL barely existed in Sydney and Brisbane and Rugby League was wrapped up in and then recovering from the highly destructive ‘Super League War’ which split the game and fans.
But now the AFL is now an 18 team competition with 2 pro teams in both Sydney and Brisbane/Gold Coast respectively built largely off supplanting Union’s place in its traditional private school nurseries, whilst the NRL is now a 17 team competition and so strong that it is also about to expand to 18 and then has plans to go to 20 teams (which will also likely see it add another NZ team).
That’s a LOT of competition from other contact oval ball football codes for a relatively small population of 26 million people. Add to that, Rugby’s one defining appeal - its international presence - has been undercut somewhat by the growing success of soccer in Australia. The socceroos and the A-League have their problems, but they’ve built a significant profile of their own and if having high profile internationals is your thing, then soccer just scratches that itch better than Rugby.

South Africans reign supreme against the Wallabies. What a display against a side devoid of ideas and unable to tackle. The scoreline flattered the Aussies who scored with South Afrixa having two men in the bin.
