Thanks Davie, a great pattern especially in early Spring. The hackled pattern was always more successful on the River Ure, in North Yorkshire, it was always the go too pattern in April. I have a good collection of original Pearsall’s silks on wooden bobbins, many were my late Father’s and are over 70 years old now. Most of them are the Naples silks but I have several Gossamers as well. I can remember him tying wet flies with these silks long before there were bobbin holders and whip finish tools available. He used to cut off a length of silk first and retain the end of it in a rubber lug on his vice and all his whip finishes were by hand ! Hope you and other readers enjoy this little piece of history! I doubt there will be many rivers with March Brown hatches these days and although the artificial was a very successful fly on the Ure, I have never seen the real fly in 68 years of fly fishing ! Happy New year 👍
I’ve been fly fishing for over 20 years and only new to fly tying last year. I’ve been tying a lot of spiders cause it’s all I’ve ever used nearly and love the history off them, unfortunately I can’t get my hands on pearsalls , I was using semperfli pure silk and found it to thick , so after a lot of research I ordered YLI yesterday, looks great here and I’m looking forward to trying it, thanks
Love it. The bobbins used in sewing machines are about the same width as the Pearsalls. I wind from the YLI spools to those bobbins. For some reason I love tying with silk.
Hi Michael, I do like tying with the silk threads myself as I did learn to tye with them when I first started.I personally feel it made me a better tyer by watching the number of turns I was using and as well waxing my thread which gives the grip and strength you need..Happy New Year.. All the very best Davie
This looks good. I am used to catch good graylings with slightly different finnish version of march Brown here in northern Finland. Deffenetly gonna try this one!
For me it looks like a all season fly. Nice pattern and well tied. I wish you and your family the best for the next year. Thank you very much for all the flies that you showed us and all the helpful comments. Best greetings from Switzerland Guido, one of your 100 000 fans.
Cheers Davie, great tip about using up long partridge hackles! I use the YLI silks for all my spiders & Clyde style flies and would recommend them to anybody, there's loads of nice colours equivalent to Pearsalls. The spools are quite wide but I just put them on a spare bobbin holder I don't mind bending to fit.
I must say Davie, Sir your ability to get the thread to accept dubbing is superb! Unbelievable! its always been something I do not like to do, i'd much rather just go through and make a dubbing loop because of how difficult i find it to get the thread to accept dubbing! it always ends up wrapped around itself next to the thread instead of evenly or near evenly around the thread. Even when i use tacky dubbing wax!
Its a fly i have never used or had in my boxes as am not normaly out on the river till mid may onwards great fly tho i hear alot of people talk about it i have been fly fishing now about 12 years tying for about 10 years and still learming
Well Done as usual Davie! I Tie hares ear and March Browns with SILVER Wire or Tinsel. I have even better success. You should try it. Especially for Brown Trout on Sunny Days.
Hi Thomas, I was going to say that you could use a silver rib on the yellow version as it would be a great variant to the one with the orange thread..I will tye some for myself so I'll let you know how well they work...Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.. All the very best Davie..
Hi J. Glen Welker , I use a Law vise but unfortunately it's no longer being made, I did a video on it, I have attached link to it for you to see.. th-cam.com/video/3P6MZIrpGG0/w-d-xo.html All the verity best Davie..
Another beauty of a March Brown, Davie. Good to see the lighter side of the secondary being used, if I'm not mistaken I think you used them on the March Brown jingler too. The YLI silks are great value for money aren't they. Have you tried the Morus silks? I've yet to give them a go. All the best Tony.
Lovely fly Davie. Question please, when you tidied up the head you were working up the slope of thread so that each turn was resting against the previous one, but when you whip finished you worked down the slope towards the eye. Does this lead to the possibility that the thread will tend to fall down the slope, thus getting loose. Cheers
Hi Davie. On the subject of threads; when using threads like the uni thread many instructors online and in books stress that you should correct your thread every so often by spinning it anti clockwise so it lies flat and materials are less prone to twist round the shank. I’ve never noticed you doing that (or at least you’ve never mentioned it) and and everything lies beautifully for you so I was wondering if you are managing the twist in the thread more actively than it seems or there are some other tricks you use instead to make things sit nicely.
Hi Heather, I got your donation thank you, I'll email you tonight with your number as I get your email from PayPal..Merry Christmas and thank you again and good luck.. All th every best Davie..
More materials! I checked on YLI silk, ouch! I bought a spool of white thinking maybe I can dye it, but $20 a spool here is ouchy! LOL. Great looking fly though!
Hi Kerry, I did a quick search and found the Yli thread at $7 a spool so it may be worth searching around to find the best price...I have attached a link for you to see.. All the very best Davie ylicorp.com/products/silk-100-thread?variant=35612391758

Love the classics you have been tying of late! These are those I grew up tying. Takes me back 50 years, back when I was a teen.
Nice tie Davie. One of my favorite wet flies.
Thanks Davie. Lovely March Brown.

An excellent tie but I have a question. To me, if the wings were pointing down instead of up, it would be more visually appealing. Your opinion?
What is you vise? It seems to hold the hook much better than what I’ve been using. You very productive flies. I appreciate your effort!
