Probably the Golden age of Scottish rugby in my lifetime. I remember in 1987 at the first world cup . The best game in the tournament was the pool match between France and Scotland. It was a non stop thriller ending in a appropriate 20 all draw. They were by far the best two teams in Europe at the time.
I was only 8 when this happened and I watched it with my grandfather who had played rugby when he was in the RAF. I didn't really know the rules but it watching with him was enough to get me hooked on the game. Looking back now the skills and ability of the players really was excellent and you have to love a Gary Armstrong dive pass from 9.....
I was on a ski holiday in France during that match, we hired a TV and set it up in the foyer of the apartment building. Every bar we went into that night we got free drinks, the French wouldn't let us pay! Great night!
So much to enjoy about this, apart from the result. Bill McLaren's dulcet tones and scrupulously fair commentary, so many Scottish legends on the park at the same time. (and what about those itsy, bitsy, teeny weeny shorts.....)
Can someone please do something clever with computers and get an AI to get Bill McLaren to commentate on every game until the end of time. Such a wonderful, insightful, passionate and non-biased voice. "A wonderful England try there" and he was right, but it didn't matter which shirt to Bill it was all about the beauty of the game.
I was at that game. I was standing at the clock end. From what I remember it cost me £4.00 to get in. There were Scots mixing with English, and although there was some serious "banter", there was never any suggestion that it would turn to violence. Great memories.
I will never tire of watching this, the old Murrayfield, the Poll tax, the sheer bloodymindedness, Flower of Scotland sang for the first time as an anthem, and we sent them homewards, tae think again.
Trip down memory lane! What names, Guscott, Carling, Chalmers, Cronin, Hastings, Probyn, Hill, Andrew (I'm English in case you hadn't guessed). This is the era of rugby I fell in love with, and still love to this very day.
Weren't England also going for the Grand Slam? I seem to recall the build-up was all about that, with the occasional "And of course Scotland could win it too."
I believe so. My dad was 20, and at the final Murrayfield match. He still remembers the pub afterwards like it was yesterday - all singing together, like a little beacon of hope in the Thatcher years.
Some grat names from the past the time when Rugby jumpers looked like rugby jumpers & not a advertising platform that also look like soccer jumpers nowadays
Why is it "really sad"? With a small pool of talent from which to choose we can only expect to win a grand slam every three or four generations. Probably even less than that now that the sport is professional.
@@peteryoungpeteryoung965 rugby is not played or watched in most of Scotland. And unknown in city housing schemes. In Wales it is in the fabric of their society. Is like saying why aren't France or England better than NZ.
@@neildiamondo1131 A good question, why are'nt they? Are you saying that Scotland shoud'nt even be in the Six Nations because no one in Scotland knows what rugby is. England, France and Scotland have all underachieved. Ireland and Wales have over achieved and so have NZ, massively so. In Ireland's case it's only their 4th most popular sport. In Australia its only their 5th most popular sport and look what they have achieved. It's all about desire, coaching and a will to win. Scotland has the players and it looks like Gregor has them playing at last.
A good lesson here for try time - don't be celebrating anything until the final whistle. It's why so many teams concede after scoring, they have indulged the chemical release and gone to sleepy mode. And what I wouldn't give to have Vern Cotter back with Craig Chalmers as his attack coach!
We can certainly do nostalgia! Simply by standing still we've gone backwards. At the next Calcutta Cup match @ M/fld, England clocked up a record win & did it on a regular basis. Record wins year after year. A major contributing factor to Scotland's win was English arrogance. Now we win about 1 match in every 5 against the Home Countries. Poor planning & preparation gives p*ss poor performance. The entire country really isn't prepared to compete at the required level.

Watching this in 2022 hard to believe that was 32 years ago!
How wonderful to hear Bill McLaren's voice again!
Was just about to make exactly the same comment. TV commentating has regressed dreadfully.
Worth watching/ listening for that alone.
I agree. Maybe we are a little nostalgic but as an Irish man Fred Cogley was the voice of rugby here and Bill's voice was equally legendary.

This was a fantastic Scottish team full of flair in every position!
Loved watching them! 🏴
Hastings ball control against England was superb. Carling was also a great player.

Oh those were the days! Absolutely love this
I went to the game at Cardiff, then the following game at Murrayfield the following week - that was the week that was. Great memories
A great game. Tension, excitement, electric.
Rugby heaven...this wee boy'5 heart is ready to burst with pride and joy....

The mighty sole, white, calder, milne and jeffrey were all over the pitch.
When rugby players weren't body builders. A faster and more exciting game.
Lol aye and offisdes, Knock-ons, and so much more was allowed hahahha
As I've told my wife a million times, big doesn't necessarily mean better.
I'm not usually a fan of the "better in my day" brigade but I know exactly what you mean.
It seems that's what scrums are these days. Just a little mini game within the game to show who's got bigger muscles.
No words, no words can come anywhere near describing my emotions that day....pure rugby heaven....

love a good pitch invasion
We need this back. If only it was so engrained into the culture like it is in wales, we would be flying. Let’s get rugby growing.
That Scotland team..full of world class players. What the hell happened ?
I will never tire of watching this, the old Murrayfield, the Poll tax, the sheer bloodymindedness, Flower of Scotland sang for the first time as an anthem, and we sent them homewards, tae think again.
"it looked so inebriated as it went over" God I miss Bill McLaren.
I do it, too. And I miss those times, watching the 5 nations in Italy, with my teammates...
Yes im a kiwi but he was the best.
So do I Graham the best rugby commentator of all time.

Yep and Carling wasn’t too nice about the chances of us “Sweatties” prior to the game.
everything was up for grabs, the Calcutta cup, the Triple crown and the Grand Slam.
Yir richt wee Scots had nae chance according to the English hype and media made it even better in the end
Aye the English are always the favourites ti win makes it better when they don't
Loved Bill McLarens comment aboot the inebriated kick sheer Scots class
Some grat names from the past the time when Rugby jumpers looked like rugby jumpers & not a advertising platform that also look like soccer jumpers nowadays
Scotland seem to have had a tradition of small but successful loose head props eg Ian "Mighty Mouse" McLaughlin, David Sole, Tom Smith
It's really sad what's happened to Scotland since but it looks like they could be on the way back.

@@dundeedolphin Come of it, Scotland is a much bigger country than Wales, yet we have won 12 grand slams, only one less than England.

Sole and Lineen provided crucial "over the advantage line" ball in many tries.

Used to go to Murrayfield when you paid 7/6 at the turnstiles to view great international rugby.
7/6 = 38 p in today's money.
A perfect day.
I was quite surprised it was in colour.
Cheeky git! :-)
Why a Aussie beer ad? Castlemaine xxxx

True, the no vote was a real disaster for Scotland.
Bill mclaren "it looked so inebriated as it went over".....yet we all know exactly what you meant....much missed
Been a long time between drinks.... unfortunately!
Proper rugby shirts too, not the skin tight nonsense we have now
RIP Grand Slam 2021
Us Scottish need a rethink of our psyche. That once, great warrior-nation mentality has completely gone.
What do you expect when we have so many no votes in the country??
@@alanreid9385 I might be wrong but I think most of that 1990 team would have voted no.
I kissed John Jefferey on the head in the pub the night after the England game
The players then were like gazelles on the hoof, rather than today's fresian bulls on steroids.
Wonderful memories.
What year was this
1990
Tukalo on the blind side
you don't see many pitch invasions in rugby these days
I’m pretty sure another grand slam would result in another
Probably the best Scottish try wee Armstrong and Big Gav then the young Lanky Stanger
Rember Jeffrey's was a farmer nae money in the game then
Only 4 points for a try?
...before the game became over coached 😞
First I think
