    I was one of the children in the corner where Jim Pollock scored the try to bring the scores level. Aged 8, my first time at Murrayfield. We were in tears when Peter Dods missed the conversion.
    Some great examples of JIm Telfer's rucking game, copied from the All Blacks of course.

    The driving ruck was a glorious sight and NZ & Scotland were probably the two greatest teams at utilising it around this time.

      There have been 32 meetings in the series overall: New Zealand have won 30 and there have been two draws, both at Murrayfield (0-0 in 1964 and 25-25 in 1983). I was at this game. The Scottish coaching team of Jim Telfer and Ian McGeechan were avid advocates of the fast rucking game having studied the ABs extensively and it was a fantastic game of rugby. Scotland went on from this match to win a Grand Slam in the 1984 Five Nations Championship (their first Slam since 1925, which was the year Murrayfield was opened and their first Triple Crown since 1938). It was disappointing to see Peter Dods miss the conversion of Jim Pollock's try in the corner. He was usually deadly accurate on place kicks and that would have given Scotland their first ever win over the ABs. I think the ABs are the only international side Scotland have never beaten.

      John Rutherford was a world class fly-half. Probably the best No 10 Scotland have ever had in my opinion. His positional kicking was phenomenally good! He would have had many more caps if injury hadn't ended his career at the Rugby World Cup in 1987. His half-back partnership with Roy Laidlaw was magnificent!

    Not broadcast in the U.K. I believe the two camera coverage was allowed by the A.C.T.T. union as long as there was no coverage in the U.K.The strike lasted for five weeks and also affected all Tennis and Rugby coverage. In the U.K. we had LIVE and uninerrupted coverage of Day Two of the 1983 Ryder Cup a month before in which Jack whiitiker had to apolgize for no day two coverage on A.B.C. Also I seem to remember Nigel Mansell winning his first world championship in Hungray. Which was not affected by the strike.

    This nearly became Scotlands first ever win against NZ. Hard to know why Scotland hasn't beat the ABs in 118 years of playing them. They have beaten the Boks and Wallabies but not the ABs. Once Ireland finally won against them in 2016 after 111 years they have now beaten the ABs 3 out of the last 5 tests so who knows with Scotland maybe getting that first win and carrying it on.

    How the game has changed, some for the better, most for the worse. These were the days when lineouts were won by jumping the highest, no substitutes, rucking offside players was allowed, and no slow boring mauls, look at the white blanket charging towards the line in this clip - glorious sight. Glad I played in this era, I wouldn’t last 5 minutes with the big softies in todays game.

      @Andy Butler Knight, Dalton, Ashworth, Haden, Whetton, Higginson, Loveridge, Hewson. There were a couple of others unavailable too. Arthur Stone was part of the Lions series. So, there's 9. Still rubbish?

    • @99waylon
      @99waylon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Andy Butler We are talking about 1983. All Blacks played the lions and Wallabies and all those names I mentioned played in those test. All Blacks were missing their whole tight 5 (plus Higginson) and Loveridge and Hewson for the end of year tour. That 1983 All Black team that played at full strength were unstoppable, so I would say that if all those players were available, they would have won all their games on tour. Stu Wilson wasn't that keen on being captain too. I still remember listening to the radio when they named the team to tour and I didn't know many of them. I was disappointed John Kiwan didn't make it after his outstanding debut season with Auckland. Bruce Smith got in after a couple of good seasons for Waikato.
