I don’t have a yak, I have a lifetime with a bro craft mount running a minnkota 30/30, lithium batteries, 7 inch fish finder mounted on a console panel. Spent last winter wiring it. I did the all the work myself and learned a lot. If you want to really enjoy fishing, a motor is such a relief! I never used to wear a PFD until I started fishing kayak tournaments. Now it's a habit. I got the NK180 motor. It's great. Pushes my PA14 around at 5.5. I even run it on extremely low power to quickly run down banks at times. The down side is its 24V and those batteries are not cheap. I use a 50AH and I've never ran it dead. Total set up was a little over 2K. I will say if you're someone who jerk bait fishes, drop shots or just generally likes to get a bunch of cast in. The Xi3 with spot lock is probably your best bet. I have seen/heard where people didn't have it on and wish they did and now won't kayak without one on. I fish on a busy lake here in Michigan and a flag in the daytime and lights for night fishing is a good thing to have. First aid kit.
I fish a lot of rocky rivers with thick brush, and it's excellent for those situations. I also like it for kayak trips. Just clip it to a tree at night at the edge of the river. My 133x carries tons of gear. I do 5 day trips on rivers and lakes with it, and it's been incredibly handy, rather than dragging a huge kayak and 200lbs of gear on shore every time you eat or shit. Definitely always a pfd.
The usefulness of a stake out pole depends on what sort of water you're fishing. I find it's great in a shallow muddy-bottom fishery. Wouldn't bother with it in a rocky highland reservoir. And yes, do wear the PDF!
I always wear my pfd. Last May i was fishing in calm water. A buddy was having problems so i pulled next to him to help out. While there, a boat came rolling by and threw a wake at us. It hit both yaks, broadside. My buddy's yak was hit first and a split second later i was. The two kayaks collided while the wake was under us. His yak hit mine and lifted my yak up. I fell off my yak. The pfd lifted me to the surface immediately. I was able to grab the side of the yak and our buddies who were near came to help out. I did not have to dig out my pfd from my yak. You need it immediately. I know the arguements for not wearing it, but I want it to work for me in the one time its really needed. Make sure you get a properly fitting pfd. Its more comfortable, so your more likely to wear it.
I personally wear a PFD. I do consider myself a good swimmer, howerver, a lot of good swimmers have died because they didn't wear a PFD. Extra bonus if you get a PFD that has all the pockets bell and whistles it make fishing easier.
I love my trolling motor. MotoGuide XI3 with anchor feature. This is awesome. Pre-tournament fishing, helps you break down a lake more efficiently. Can be expensive but I felt (for me) it was a must have. Between the motor and my side scan Helix 8. MONEY!!!! Great vid as always tight lines.
My fav is the smallest you mentioned, the nail clippers. Ive been carrying one on a shoelace around my neck while fishing for over 30 years. Totally agree on the net, IMO nets are cheating but I feel the same about fish finders too.

I have a Lifetime Teton (I think). I recently built a cart to help transport it. I’m very happy with how it turned out. I also just bought a trolling motor for it. A 12 V Minn Kota 55Lb thrust 36’ shaft. I also have a Garmin Vivid 4CV with a 4 inch display. My question is the battery. What should I get? I’m guessing one of those small 12V is not gonna be enough or last very long.

how I anchor my pwc which is a fully decked out jet ski including fish finder is a 5lb scuba weight right beside me that drops quickly and quietly and I have a second scuba weight on a rope to allow me to position myself to face any direction I choose
Yes, l love my trolling motor i use it to go off shore and catch game fish I definitely recommend anyone who spends their time on the water to get one, trust me it's 100% worth it
😂 yay! I just wouldn't suggest being out in the middle of the lake/river with your cooler of beer though fellas while yaking. Save it for the bank. Oh, and always wear your pdf.
Its illegal in all 50 states. Same as driving or operating a boat while drinking! I'll fill a 42oz double wall water bottle with Coors. Keeps it low key
@@wendellfishing I haven't fished it in a few years 😪 since I moved to Medina county. When I lived near Summit racing I would fish either Mogadore or Walbourn depending on the wind direction. Before they opened Mogadore up to boats over 14 ft (with tournaments) it wasn't as hard to get double digit bags with a decent kicker. Now I fish Findlay, Spencer or Wellington which are smaller with less traffic. I do miss Ole Moggy.
Thank you for calling a Walleye a WALLEYE , not a pickerel......pickerel are more of the pike family with a black line that goes down through their eye. We called them grass pike as kids.....walleye taste awesome , best eating freshwater fish in my books , especially the cheeks...... Now I'm hungry....great video now I have to check what I have and what I need for this year to add on to my kayak. Here in Canada we need the safety kit onboard all vessels , even kayaks...... Nice fine if you don't have it with you......( cheap charge in my books ) 👍 👍 🇨🇦
I get the brush gripper on creeks and rivers. Anchor can be nice even with pedals. I don't think either of those are underrated. I wear the PFD in places with heavy boat traffic, can't swim unconscious.
One thing, it’s a big one, is the pedal drive well. Nothing makes my Hobie AI as difficult as a pedal drive going down into the well loosely and taking on gallons of water at your feet I am new but right off the bat discouraged by pedal drives like mine. I don’t see how AI pedal drive slots can’t leak. Am I missing a seal around the drive? But if your feet stay dry, don’t underestimate it!
I never get in my kayak without a PFD. Once I was 1/4 mile from the dock, forgot my PFD, and wet back for it. Not only is it for safety, but I use the type with pockets for whistle, cell phone, and also have an attached knife and some other accessories.
I always wear my pfd. Even when it sucks. I know it has probably happened but I've never heard of a drowning victim who was wearing a pfd. Accidents happen better to be safe than sorry.
I also represent the PFD wearing full time. I can swim just fine but if I have a medical emergency or something, I’d like to at least have a chance to make it home to my wife and kids.
I wear my PFD at times and don't at times. Some of the areas I fish are less than 4 feet deep. I do not wear it in those places unless my 5 year old is out with me. I don't let him see me on the water without mine cause I don't let him out of his unless we are in the parking lot.
Regarding PFD's.... I am 59 years old and in really good shape. However, I have had a few episodes where I get light headed and feel like I may pass out. The term vasovagal is a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure that can sometimes happen. If one were not wearing a PFD, you could possibly fall out of the kayak and drowned. Not cool. I always wear one..... Better safe than sorry....
I wear a PDF that doubles as a fishing vest my clippers, pliers, line ,license all set up. I only need to carry a small box with a few lures, and other junk.
All right , so here's my question from this greenhorn angler. I purchased a used kayak, went out for my maiden voyage for 6 hours, no real issues . But, I'm a big guy and I'm concerned because my kayak is a little less stable than I'd like. What are your thoughts on outriggers, are they useful? do they slow you down too much? I do not see a lot of TH-cam anglers with them which is a red flag as far as I'm concerned. Thoughts? Thanks for the vids! Tight lines 🎣
Hey Mark, you are right, I don't see too many people with outriggers and I imagine the reason would be that it's more difficult to turn and I would imagine fish would like to tangle you up in them whenever they get the chance. My recco from the research I have done on these would be this. 1: practice your deep water reentry just in case and two.. I think you will find that after a few more uses that you will dial it in. If you are going to tip your yak.. it's usually in one of few first outings as you are getting used to it. Stay safe out there brother.
Test how stable it is on a warm day, and you don’t care to get wet. For me I found my kayak was stable. I just had to balance better and not over adjust.
@@grazhopper5069 yeah basically I stood up next to the dock and I could stand in it but there's no way I'm standing in it in Open water 🤣. I have 12 hours logged no issues so I think I'm fine. It's a used kayak, it's my first kayak. The weight rating was a little off from the guy who sold it to me and I'm still learning the ropes. Overall I think once I adjust and start to really like it I'll upgrade later on. Thanks for the tips tight lines 🎣
If you have a Native Propel, they make a transom mount that replaces the Propel drive that you can mount a regular trolling motor to. So you don’t have to spend the money if a Bixpy or Torqueedo or NK180. You do lose the option to pedal.
Ironically, I am selling my 12' Seastream Openwater and "downgrading" to a Pelican Catch because of the seat. I bought a boat because the kayak is unsafe to fish where Iive and yet tomorrow my wife and I are going to one of the few secluded areas where kayak fishing is only possible. Having both is nice, but very expensive. I would say, if anyone is wanting to kayak fish, to consider changing the equipment used. For example, a "one-step-heavier" action rod is almost needed in a kayak since you generally are not able to move like you can on a boat or shore. Even the angle of hook set is different and deserving of a heavier action rod than what is normally called for. I would also suggest a shorter handled net that can easily be reached so you are netting as you land. I've found that the majority of fish lost are due to poor hooksets caused by inherent issues with kayak fishing that anglers overlook or never think about.
@@wendellfishing yeah...just went with my name. I took the 4 Czens part off since people were confused about what it meant. People.are atill confused because I am not a "niche-based" creator and instead I am just a creator that posts about things I do and like.

Has for PFD of course you are required to have one on the kayak. I only wear mine in busy boating areas all other times I have its behind me. Here in Florida we have a lot of out of Towner's (Yankee doodles) that have never seen water or a wake zone never seen a boat until they rent one. They scream for fun control we scream for boat control 😂😂
I agree with most. Have had the striker 4 for 3 years.( Since I got my yak). Perfect for what I need. Mounts unobstructed on my sonar pod. You'd have to look at my platform. Feel free moken 12 .5. Has a wheel in the keel. Do carry a floating net along with fish grips. My PFD is behind my seat as well. Gotta get my sun. Until October in Pa.. Made an open crate w/ 3 rod holders, plus two inset rear and two Scotty's on front rail. Paddle only kayak but still added the rudder. Steer with my feet. Oh, battery/ transducer, and Striker live in and on my sonar pod. Use an anchor for windy conditions. Appreciate all the info you put out here. BTW, what lakes do you fishing Ohio near PGH?
Right on Greg.. nice rig. I don't head toward Pittsburgh much to fish. It's at least 2 hours from where I live. I mostly stay local with some trips to Central PA, Southern OH, and Michigan.
The cooler aspect isn't uncommon. a lot of guys use livewell/cooler combos. For me its been just sun gear like legging socks gators/hoodies etc, nothing sucks more then being 1-2 miles off shore and getting absolutely scorched, but i guess this really depends on your area/climate.
Not into beer, but I'm amazed how so many opt for fish bags vs cooler for their catch! I have my cooler outfitted with rod holders. It keeps my rods well above the water - I very much dislike the built into the hull rod holders. I like throwing my fish on ice, but I absolutely am not into stinking fish bags (hard to clean).
@@michaell1665 Most fish bags i have seen are Hobie clones so they are bow mounted, allowing you to also use a cooler as a live well. that and they tend to be larger than your average cooler. But yeah not something that's really needed for lake fishing.
I get that the weather was very calm, but with the number of noob's like me that watch you, you should consider wearing a pfd instead of a go-pro around your neck. If yer gonna put yerself out there, set a good example!
@@wendellfishing most useless piece of kit I’ve ever seen for a kayak haha .. your video is spot on tho with everything to make kayaking easier safer and more enjoyable the only thing I’ve added to my kayak other then wat you’ve said is a first aid kit just in case I cut myself or get a hook stuck in me or something
Wow, I have never in my life seen a Senko worked that fast! Hmmmmm... How about some kind of quickly accessible measuring device? Could even be a simple as a sticker that looks like a ruler that adheres to the side railing of your kayak. You do NOT want to get caught with a fish under the legal length, or in that 'catch & release only' zone for lakes with a slot limit. I had a walleye that was one inch short of legal(no measuring device on hand, so I just 'eyeballed' it) years ago back home in Oklahoma, and it got me a painful $150 ticket. Don't be *that* guy - like I was.
I was working it fast because I was fishing over dying grass and if I let it fall I was getting the ol grass bass lol.. Good call on the ruler. I just bought a sticker one that I adhered to my kayak about a month ago. I may do a quick short on it. $150.... ugh.. that is painful
Where i live. New South Wales Australia it is mandatory to wear a PFD when in a kayak. I don't mind wearing it especially fishing in Shark infested waters at night and the ocean.
I carry a drift sock instead of an anchor. Weighs way less & allows you to slow down your drift in windy conditions. Works well with an anchor trolley.
@@wendellfishing neither did I, then I found a drypod for my pdl spacer and before you know it I was off into the ocean, leaning back @5.5 mph without having to kick my feet at all.
Carrying an anchor is a safety thing. Anchors are required for powerboats as a safety item, so just because you have pedal drive it's no reason not to have an anchor.

My 133x carries tons of gear. I do 5 day trips on rivers and lakes with it, and it's been incredibly handy, rather than dragging a huge kayak and 200lbs of gear on shore every time you eat or shit.
Definitely always a pfd.
Right on Greatlakezgirl.. I'm coming up this week to fish Michigan.. wish me luck!
Right on Stonehorn
@@wendellfishing Good luck. Are you fishing for salmon?
I’m not , just smallies and largies around landing and Detroit
The usefulness of a stake out pole depends on what sort of water you're fishing. I find it's great in a shallow muddy-bottom fishery. Wouldn't bother with it in a rocky highland reservoir. And yes, do wear the PDF!
Solid Add Matthew! Thanks boss!
Solid boss.. and when things happen.. they happen fast
Thanks boss, and I'm thinking about an upgrade on the Fish Finder so thanks for the recco!
Great video! I have the Old Town 106MK, and love the hidden Minn Kota motor. 👍😎🎣💦
Thanks Claudia! That's a sick rig!
My fav is the smallest you mentioned, the nail clippers. Ive been carrying one on a shoelace around my neck while fishing for over 30 years.
Totally agree on the net, IMO nets are cheating but I feel the same about fish finders too.
You are a fishing purist!!! Not many of you left
Go and grab one of those paddle holders!
Right on Brother
You know you could use the lip grip for a brush grabber. I do theres always some place to hook it. Use the hole to grab a branch.
Could you do video how to take a good picture of your catch from your kayak and any accessories you might need to do so.
Picture or Video? For photo... I have a mount for my phone and you can use voice commands or set a timer.. for video...I have a video on that. Let me know if you are interested
Congrats boss on the new yak and well done on the DIY cart. Awesome. Here's a guide for the battery needed for your Minn Kota. Hope it helps: www.minnkotamotors.com/sites/minnkotamotors_site/files/min_productmanual_batt-wire-selct-gde.pdf
how I anchor my pwc which is a fully decked out jet ski including fish finder is a 5lb scuba weight right beside me that drops quickly and quietly and I have a second scuba weight on a rope to allow me to position myself to face any direction I choose
I own a brush gripper and I think I will use it but I haven't yet used it
Yes, l love my trolling motor i use it to go off shore and catch game fish I definitely recommend anyone who spends their time on the water to get one, trust me it's 100% worth it
Right on Tony!
😂 yay! I just wouldn't suggest being out in the middle of the lake/river with your cooler of beer though fellas while yaking. Save it for the bank. Oh, and always wear your pdf.
Yea my state it’s a dui. And they’ll watch you with 50x binoculars from the shore. They can see if I clipped my nails to short
Right on TopWater Wes
lol.. I've only been stopped once by DNR is year. Crazy for how much I fish
Its illegal in all 50 states. Same as driving or operating a boat while drinking! I'll fill a 42oz double wall water bottle with Coors. Keeps it low key
my number one is for paddlers....a drift sock...keeps me on productive structure longer
Solid tip Eric... Thanks boss!
Is that Mogadore reservoir? My favorite accessory is my homemade manual power pole. Great video
Yes it is sir.. you fish there often?
@@wendellfishing I haven't fished it in a few years 😪 since I moved to Medina county. When I lived near Summit racing I would fish either Mogadore or Walbourn depending on the wind direction. Before they opened Mogadore up to boats over 14 ft (with tournaments) it wasn't as hard to get double digit bags with a decent kicker. Now I fish Findlay, Spencer or Wellington which are smaller with less traffic. I do miss Ole Moggy.
@@VAFSH4LIF Yeah.... it's a tough lake to figure out

Right on Beef 15.
Whats the brand name of the battery pack under your gopro. Interesting vid.
This Guy? Nocqua Pro Battery Kit 10Ah: geni.us/Nocqua10Ah
One thing, it’s a big one, is the pedal drive well. Nothing makes my Hobie AI as difficult as a pedal drive going down into the well loosely and taking on gallons of water at your feet
I am new but right off the bat discouraged by pedal drives like mine. I don’t see how AI pedal drive slots can’t leak. Am I missing a seal around the drive?
But if your feet stay dry, don’t underestimate it!
Oh man.. I don't have water coming up through my pedal drive on my native or bonafide.
I never get in my kayak without a PFD. Once I was 1/4 mile from the dock, forgot my PFD, and wet back for it. Not only is it for safety, but I use the type with pockets for whistle, cell phone, and also have an attached knife and some other accessories.
Right on Michael... I love those pockets, tethers, etc as well.
Wet back?😂
I always wear my pfd. Even when it sucks. I know it has probably happened but I've never heard of a drowning victim who was wearing a pfd. Accidents happen better to be safe than sorry.
Right on Joe!
I also represent the PFD wearing full time. I can swim just fine but if I have a medical emergency or something, I’d like to at least have a chance to make it home to my wife and kids.
Respect ✊
The most badass part of the rod holders is they can lock in spinning rods or casting rods. Worry free trolling.
Preach!
Yak gear has the yak sack which can be attached to the seat 4 mess pouches and zipper storage
Solid... just checked it out. Thanks Andrew... I have never seen this before
Sea anchor for paralleling wind blown banks. Really slows you down!!
Solid! Thanks TexasontheFly!
I always wear a PFD... ALWAYS!
Right on Moore
I made my own brush grip, and trolly. Everything on my rig was a diy project
I wear my PFD at times and don't at times. Some of the areas I fish are less than 4 feet deep. I do not wear it in those places unless my 5 year old is out with me. I don't let him see me on the water without mine cause I don't let him out of his unless we are in the parking lot.
Did the kayak crate. I can’t tell you how many old timers come up asking questions about it.
I definitely wear one everytime I'm out now. There was a time I didn't but that changed about year ago.
What rod were you using in the video? Great video too.
It was a Lews Xfinity Rod.. got it from Walmart :)
I wear a PDF that doubles as a fishing vest my clippers, pliers, line ,license all set up. I only need to carry a small box with a few lures, and other junk.
Heck yeah!
Yes, stake out pole. Stays on my kayak.
@@wendellfishing All right, very good. I think you've helped me make a decision on not using the outriggers. Thanks 👍
Right on Brother
You should have elaborated more on the tree bass God only knows we all've caught plenty of those
Oh.. .I feel like I catch one every video!!!
If you have a Native Propel, they make a transom mount that replaces the Propel drive that you can mount a regular trolling motor to. So you don’t have to spend the money if a Bixpy or Torqueedo or NK180. You do lose the option to pedal.
Right on TKF! I will have to check them out
I wear a PDF every time!
Right on Mike!
Ken... did you change your channel name?
@@wendellfishing yeah...just went with my name. I took the 4 Czens part off since people were confused about what it meant. People.are atill confused because I am not a "niche-based" creator and instead I am just a creator that posts about things I do and like.
@@KenJohnsonUSA Right on.. thanks for the explanation
I wear a pfd before I even step into a kayak, boat, or whatever cause all i can do is doggy paddle decent lol so i feel safe n worry free as long as im wearing it
Has for PFD of course you are required to have one on the kayak. I only wear mine in busy boating areas all other times I have its behind me. Here in Florida we have a lot of out of Towner's (Yankee doodles) that have never seen water or a wake zone never seen a boat until they rent one. They scream for fun control we scream for boat control 😂😂
Yankee Doodles.. lol
I see you have a battery on your GoPro, how big is the battery and how long it last ?
Here ya go... it lasts me 8+ hours. geni.us/PowerChargerBank
I’m over here with a Helix 8 and couldn’t imagine anything smaller.
Right on Greg.. nice rig. I don't head toward Pittsburgh much to fish. It's at least 2 hours from where I live. I mostly stay local with some trips to Central PA, Southern OH, and Michigan.
Maybe it's because I don't a larger one.. I imagine I wouldn't want to go back
The cooler aspect isn't uncommon. a lot of guys use livewell/cooler combos. For me its been just sun gear like legging socks gators/hoodies etc, nothing sucks more then being 1-2 miles off shore and getting absolutely scorched, but i guess this really depends on your area/climate.
Yeah, makes sense to me. I fish 99.9% freshwater so likely the disconnect
Also, I have a Native Slayer Propel 13, but would never leave without my anchor and my 8' mud anchor pole.
@@michaell1665 Most fish bags i have seen are Hobie clones so they are bow mounted, allowing you to also use a cooler as a live well. that and they tend to be larger than your average cooler. But yeah not something that's really needed for lake fishing.
@@michaell1665 Right on.. Solid Michael
I get that the weather was very calm, but with the number of noob's like me that watch you, you should consider wearing a pfd instead of a go-pro around your neck. If yer gonna put yerself out there, set a good example!

I notice you use a lot of spinning gear. What do you feel are the biggest advantages for you? I'm primarily a baitcaster guy.
I'm curious what others have to say on this
I use both
Haven't learned to skip a baitcaster from a kayak...no issues with spinning combo. Open water I prefer baitcasters
mainly because I suck a baitcasters is why I use spinners.
idk, i fly fish from my yak.
Like my friend Wendell

I carry a drift sock instead of an anchor. Weighs way less & allows you to slow down your drift in windy conditions. Works well with an anchor trolley.

Carrying an anchor is a safety thing. Anchors are required for powerboats as a safety item, so just because you have pedal drive it's no reason not to have an anchor.
