    Pretty cool that our lists are super similar. Are you using Nectar on instrument tracks as well as vocals then? I really wish Ozone combined the best features of Neutron and Nectar into one plugin for ALL instruments and voices.
    PS: My top 5 are
    1. Ozone 8 (love the tape module)
    2. Nectar 3
    3. Neutron 2
    4. MJUC
    5. Gulfoss
    In no particular order.

      When I used Neutron, I was mostly using it on Vocals -- mainly the Dynamic EQ and Gate, and sometimes the compressor as a second gentle comp. I wasn't using it much on instruments, except for bass, and occasionally the guitar buss. I don't find myself using Nectar much on instruments though, other than the EQ here and there.

      Actually now that I think about it. I've been using Nectar quite a bit on guitar leads - the dimension and harmony modules mostly.

      @@MusicTechHelpGuy I use Neutron 2 for Bass and Guitars a lot (and previously vocals until I got Nectar 3), but thinking about it now there's very little for those instruments I wouldn't like better in Nectar ...other than the transient shaper for guitars sometimes) so I'm going to try using Nectar as a Bass go to, especially that follow EQ could be great for Bass potentially, and I prefer the compressors in Neutron sound wise for their smoothness so I bet bass and Lead guitar as you mentioned that would be awesome on... Like that chorus effect on bass, but just eqing it in the plugin so it doesn't mess with the low end. Thanks for the inspiration! PS: Your project consolidate/delete files video in Logic was a HUGE help to me in saving space :)

    Nice overview...I think a top 10 list really depends on the genre of music you're doing, and this seems like a good list for mixing and master a band (drums, bass & vocals combo).
    For soundtracks or electronica I agree with some of these, for example FabFilter, Valhalla & Waves would stay on the list, though I'd replace others with:
    - FabFilter Q3 (for dynamic EQ)
    - FabFilter C2 (for compression)
    - Waves L3 & L3-16 (for limiting)
    - H-Reverb (for non-ethereal reverb)
    - Ozone's spatial plugin (which is cleaner than Waves S1)
    For creative FX I use:
    - FabFilter Saturn
    - XFER LFOTool

    It would be helpful/fair to describe your business relationship with the makers of these plugins? I see you were the voice-over guy on EastWest's video overview for Spaces II.

      I'm not paid to promote any of these plug-ins or give them a favorable review. Therefore, it's not a 'paid promotion' and doesn't require any labeling. I very rarely get paid promos on TH-cam, cause my channel simply isn't big enough -- other than the occasional AudioBlocks/VideoBlocks sponsorship.
      Because of the nature of my TH-cam channel I'm very often offered free plug-ins to review -- these are review samples. I cannot re-sell them, and therefore have no value, unless I legitimately use them and enjoy them. I'm not paid to give plug-ins good or bad reviews -- This is a 100% honest review of my favorite plug-ins at the moment. Typically, if I get a free plug-in from a company, and I try it out, and I don't like it, I just don't review it because it's not worth anyone's time to demonstrate something that I don't like or will never use. It's like giving a vegetarian a free steak dinner.
      With all that said -- the only company I have any sort of actual business relationship with is EastWest, and the majority of these plug-ins I paid for out of my own pocket. None have paid me or encouraged me in any way to include their product in this video. It's 100% my opinion, that's it.
      EastWest saw one of my reviews of their products a while back and asked me to be the voice of their online manuals for some of their new products -- Spaces II included. They do pay me to make those videos, but they are essentially dry, to the point, video manuals, on how to use the product, not a promotional tool. EW has not paid me to include Spaces in this review. I simply really fuckin' love the plug-in.
      Anyway, hope that clears that up.

    Great video, as always. Do you prefer Fabfilter Pro-L to Pro-L 2, or is it more of a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kind of deal?

    Just curious, did you ever get a chance to try out Slate's VMR? I only ask because our lists are super similar but pretty much all my compressors and EQs have been replaced by that, so I'd be curious to know your opinion!

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've tried it out at the studio. But nothing in it was game-chaging for me. It's great stuff don't get me wrong, but it hasn't replaced anything for me, yet. I'll have to give it another shot.

    Here's a question, why do you need a separate compressor for busses?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I typically like transparent compressors for individual tracks, other than the occasion LA2A clone for vocal tracks, and compressors that impose some character on the signal for busses, like the API2500. But that’s exactly why I like the 2500 so much, it works for both! The same goes for EQ too. That’s just my preference, though.

      Joe Bryant yes they do, but I recommend learning using the fl plug-ins first. A good mix comes from a good producer not from plugins

    What eq would you use on vocals, gullfoss or the one in nectar 3? Can you use both?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gulfoss is really nice for rebalancing signals. Nectar is great cause it’s eq can follow the melody. I usually use nectar on vocals, but I’ll use gulfoss on a vocal group, busses, or for mastering

    Shimmer is the worst Valhalla reverb. It’s messing with mid side which is a dangerous thing to do. All of the other Valhalla reverbs are amazing tho.
