    Love your vid dude! Great vid and a nice ride! I always did like tunnels- ever since I was a kid I have always loved freeway tunnels. Unfortuantely, Ohio doesn't have any! Great ride, great vid!

    Jim, you did an absolutely incredible job with this video!!! The editing on this was top notch, and I LOVED what you did in the tunnel with the music! Radiohead is one of my favorite bands, and this song went perfectly with the video. Without a doubt, this is going straight to the favorites!

    Another great video, Jim! Love the effect of looping and reversing the trip through the tunnel, making it seem like 5 miles long, as well as in coordination with the crescendo of the music! It's always nice to have a great song with your hometown video!

    The late city councilman Norman Reeves led the opposition in West Baltimore, saving Leakin and Gwynns Falls Parks; and in East Baltimore the opposition was led by then councilwoman and now US Senator Barbara Mikulski.

    If you are from the area you would see why that is impossible to do, without destroying some of the great neighborhoods of Baltimore such as Fells Point and Canton. The current routing of I-95 is through what was primarily industrial zoned land during the 1970s and early 1980s after years of local neighborhood opposition to the travesties of Wilmington and Philadelphia, where the freeways buried one neighborhood after another.

    Great video, as usual! But is it really the widest underwater tunnel in the world? The Elbtunnel in Hamburg in Germany also has 4 tubes with 2 lanes each making 8 lanes in total.

    No, the camera is stationery on a tripod, we pop it off so we don't have to potentially answer any questions as to why we have a camera up. Not that we're doing anything wrong of course but why invite the attention? When in San Francisco last month I left the camera up at the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza...three times, the northeast tends to be a little more uptight about such things.

    Just like in the Harbor Tunnel video, the older maps are fascinating (and they do provide some excellent glimpses into the politics of the area, once you know the whole story.) This map appears to have I-95 routed through Dundalk, Highlandtown, Canton and Fells Point with a connection to I-83 probably somewhere south of Pratt Street and a crossing right across the Inner Harbor. Had that been the final decision, Baltimore Harbor might look something like this today: www.roadstothefuture.com/EW_Expwy_Harbor_Route.html
    Fortunately, it didn't happen and the Inner Harbor went on to become what it has, with the Camden Yards complex right up Conway Street.
    And as you show in the video, the current crossing was conceived as a bridge, not a tunnel. This page has a picture of what it would have looked like: www.roadstothefuture.com/Fort_McHenry_Tunnel.html
    Ralph Corbman points out that Leakin and Gwynns Falls parks were saved, but there's still a gash through parts of West Baltimore that weren't saved. But that's more of a thing for the I-70 video. Former Senator Mikulski did save Fells Point and Canton from having either 83 or 95 routed through there. Good thing for the City, too. Those are the it neighborhoods these days.

    • @PGHammer21A
      @PGHammer21A 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was indeed the plan - and why I-83 ends at President Street, and I-70 at that Park and Ride west of both the Social Security Administration and Health Care Finance Administration buildings in Woodlawn - both were supposed to meet and connect to I-95 east of Caton Avenue (the ghost ramps are still there, in fact).

    This is where I lost my "tunnel cherry" - first tunnel I ever drove through. (Oddly enough, I was coming back home from Newark DE; I did not take I-95 out there - instead, I took US 301 via the Chesapeake Bay dual spans - "at night" - and I normally HATE bridges.)

    I may not be the biggest fan of the overdrive effects but clever use of repeats and mirrors to extend the tunnel for that guitar distortion portion.

    Nice video. Brings back memories of when I did that at close to 2 in the morning, but my internal clock was still on Pacific Time.
    I take it that folks at the toll booth get irked if you take their pictures, and that's why you skip over that?

  • @PGHammer21A

    About EZ-Pass: I was NOT a fan of it originally - however, two things killed my objections - HOV-3 discounting and open-road tolling - and the 495 Express Lanes were my first exposures to both.

  • @Freewayjim
    @Freewayjim  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @PGHammer21A
      @PGHammer21A 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first time I took this tunnel, I paid cash as well (I was also driving someone else's car). I had my tunnel music pre-planned, though - "Lonely" (Janet Jackson) from the "Rhythm Nation 1814" cassette - which I took along specifically for this drive. Radio reception is crap in tunnels - which I already knew - so I pack tuneage for tunnel drives.

    New York for I-95 north? I would think it would be Wilmington or at least Philadelphia.

    • @kesschristopher
      @kesschristopher 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is pretty strange. I don't think there's anywhere in Maryland that the 95 signs use Wilmington or Philadelphia as a control city. Those don't pop up until you enter Delaware and they start showing signs for where I-95/I-495 diverge from I-295. I wonder if they were expecting DELDOT and PENNDOT to one day give up the I-95 designation in favor of signing I-295 and the Jersey Turnpike as I-95.

      No south it will say Washington after that Richmond.

    • @rwboa22
      @rwboa22 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is due to the fact is that I-295 splits off from I-95 south of Wilmington, DE and the NJ Turnpike, even with I-95 now completed using the PA Turnpike, is the main route to NYC.

    Can anyone please tell me what are those factories are for before the tunnel going from Dundalk to north, and there are factories on the other side of the tunnel as well. It smells so bad while driving on 95 around that area. And I'm doing a project about clean environment so that's why I need to include that pollution in my project as well

    • @DAVIDRICKY41
      @DAVIDRICKY41 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't tell you what the first factory, but Dundalk has a large sewage treatment plant that really STINKS during the summer.(Never go to Eastpoint mall when it hot) The second is a waste incenerator.

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe W. No, it is not a public area, it is run by the Maryland Transit Authority and in the northeast I take the camera down at tolls as to not bring the extra attention to myself as there are police/security people at the toll plaza on most occasions. Watch my SF Videos that feature the Bay Bridge, I left the camera up, it's a different environment in the Northeast as opposed to California.
