When I got married in 2010, we played The Search Is Over, another great Survivor song. Man Against The World is a greatly overlooked wonderful song. But Eye Of The Tiger is still a favorite.
Peterik would be the greatest uncle ever. This interview and the Don Barnes (.38 Special) interview are probably my two favorites so far, which is saying something because this channel has consistently had great interviews. To bring out and showcase the humble relatability of some of these music greats is such a refined skill.
Stallone is not most movie stars. he was a guy with a typewriter in Hell's Kitchen that nobody gave a chance. It's fitting that he's the one that gave this dude a chance to shine. Having trust in a person can result in great things.
I always kind of liked Stallone, but then I heard him narrate the commentary on the director’s cut of _First Blood._ If you haven’t heard it, give yourself that gift sooner rather than later.
In 85 I was in the army stationed at Ft. Hood Texas in the 2nd armored battalion. We were known as the tiger battalion so every morning when we're out doing P.T. Eye of the Tiger was blaring through the loud speakers. Running 2 miles and hearing that song we could run forever it felt like
And to think, '85 was before the PT belt. If you heard the song AND had on a PT belt you could have run all the way to Austin and rucked back to Killeen.
This is a great interview with Jim Peterik (Survivor and the Ides of March) about the creation of the song Eye of the Tiger for the Rocky movie was really awesome in fact i just got finished listening to Vehicle by his old band the Ides of March here on TH-cam along with Chicago and Blood, Sweat & Tears three of the best bands with horn sections another great video about classic rock and roll Thank You again Professor.🎶AM📻FM🎶
Great story !! I have seen them once back in the 90's at Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom..it was great! It was the best sounding .. and distortion free concert, that i have ever been to. They put on a really great show!
They hadn’t had a hit with them singing but Jim wrote Rocking Into The Night and after they recorded it and left it off the album they gave it to 38 Special. Jim also wrote and sang lead on Vehicle by Ides Of March. More recently Jim was the one who told Dennis DeYoung that he was an icon that needed new music and produced his two comeback albums. Incredibly talented, prolific and underrated musician!
19:56 You touched on this one awhile back. I'm just glad it was this band and NOT a band like Europe with the FINAL COUNTDOWN. HHHHAATE that tune. Awesome Story Adam as always!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎🎸🤟🏼
Jim seems so rad, a total dude. Even though I probably listened to it yesterday, I had to stop the interview halfway through for "Eye Of The Tiger," one more time.
I got to work/set up a private Survior concert in 96-96 at a hanger in Regan National Airport. Briefly said “hi” to band, but the roadies were cool! Heh I was sent to a few guitar stores in Arlington Va to look for a spare part(pickup switch for a Les Paul?) , that sucked but the rest of it was fun!

Excellent interview, Ive always loved this song having grown up in the 80's And Jim Peterik seems like a really great guy, very down to earth and relatable.
Never thought about it until Mr Peterik said that the music during the lyrics was very little so the focus was on the words, great move! You feel like you can go 12 rounds with Clubber Lang after you play this song, great in-depth interview professor!!
In Navy boot camp in 1988 this song and God Bless the USA were played to our company around the 6th week and I can tell you both of them lifted our spirits and helped all complete basic training. They both hit a bit different ever since.
I've always loved this song! When I first started my TH-cam channel, I did all Chipmunk versions of songs, and I did a Chipmunk version of this. The Chipmunk thing was something that I did to entertain my wife, but my daughter hated the Chipmunks and suggested that I sing with my regular voice, so I kind of slowly phased out the Chipmunk stuff. Now I don't even have that app anymore, so I haven't done a song like that in several years, but I still have all of them in a playlist called Kraziness, hence the name Karaoke & Kraziness. I did this song right after I recovered from a bad illness because I felt like a fighter after a comeback! It's a great motivational song!
Good morning, Professor! I love your interviews with Jim. He's such a great storyteller. His Stallone imitation is fantastic and hilarious! How fortunate for them and for us that Queen wouldn't give Stallone the rights to their music. I love that he uses his own song to lift himself up when he needs an emotional boost just like the rest of us. The little girl story from the pizza place is just adorable. Thanks for bringing us this interview, Adam. Have a happy hump day!
My drill Sgts played this song at breakfast the day we had to qaulify with our M-16. Mind you, we had not heard ANYTHING but cadence for 2 months. What a morning, what a song.
I was 2 years old when Rocky III was made and Survivor hit with "Eye of the Tiger". That made it one of those songs that have practically always been there for me. Afterwards, I would hear other songs that Survivor issued as singles ("I Can'tHold Back", "High on You", "The Search is Over", "Burning Heart" et al), and acknowledged e when I saw them play 20 years after this song was new during one of the reunion tours with Dave's successor, Jimi Jamison, how important they were to me in my youth. There are men who are often either overlooked, taken for granted or inappropriately targeted for all the wrong reasons. Regarding the syncopation in the intro, I knew that was going to be a total sideswipe when one of the bands I played in during the 2010s covered this song. A couple of us were trying to show the bass guitarist where to place all the appropriate hits, and it was not syncing in with him. I actually think the drummer was one of the people who got it.
I love Vital Signs! I had the cassette with me when I was on vacation and visiting my brother in Pensacola. The rental car had a cassette deck. I played it *all* week! 😊 As a tandem comment, Toto gave a free concert on the beach on my first day. My brother told me about it but suggested I get there early, before the bridge got closed. First day of vacation... up at 6:00 AM. Worth it!
(21:35) They didn't need another hit. This was THE HIT of all hits. It's still going strong. Eye of the tiger was one of, if not THE song that defined the 80's. No matter what style & genre of music you were into, everyone loved that song. I enjoyed the interview and hearing the back story. Oh. And SHAKEY'S Pizza was awesome! They had the balloon man with huge cardboard feet that theyd give to the kids and you could watch them twirl the dough through the big window inside the restaurant. It was the birthday destination for so many.
PROF: U Gotta do a video on Rocky 4's "NO EASY WAY OUT" - Amazingly powerful scene from the moment the car door is opened w/ the flashbacks throughout.
i was playing in bands, for 52 years, this song was a bar band song,..... part of the setlist along with she works hard for the money and what I like about you. and the stones honky tonk woman
I loved how, in Rocky III, the music from the end of Rocky's fight over Apollo dissolves into Eye of the Tiger, and we get twin montages, one is of Rocky's status as a beloved fighter grows while the other is Clubber Lang moving up the ranks and training alone. Someone really should make a movie about Clubber. I know the Rocky franchise has completely saturated the culture over the last 50 years, but there has to be a place for Clubber's story.
Obviously their best song, but "Ever Since The World Began" is a beautiful song that Tommy Shaw covered and both his and Survivor's version are great, should have been a radio single.
I remember recording the song from vinyl onto cassette. My father was a preacher and would not let us listen to rock music but he was also a fireman and at the fire department they watched a lot of movies. So my father made an exception for eye of the tiger since it went along with Rocky and that kind of opened up my opportunities to start listening to more music.
Love the song one of my favorites has got me threw a lot of hard times in life also love the movie all of them also one of my favorites , it's like they go hand in hand 👍
I always loved this song. A few years ago, my work had a basketball (actually horse) tournament & I thought -How Could I Win? When it was my turn to play, I played EOTT on TH-cam as I walked to the court. It really pumped me up!! My theme music. I won it all that year!!!
This has to quite literally be the greatest underdog rock and roll tune story in history. Love Jim and Survivor. And the Jane Fonda story is absolutely freakin' hilarious!

Id love to see you do the story behind Silver Springs. I know it's been done by other TH-camrs. But there is something about the stories you tell that makes them timeless. Thank you again Professor.
I know this song is associated with Rocky but it always makes me think of Jensen Ackles' karaoke version in Supernatural. He was just messing around when he thought he was off-camera and it became a classic moment for the series.
"Eye Of The Tiger" is the favorite song for Aussie drunks in pubs who think they can sing. I'm living in Cagayan de Oro City Mindanao Philippines now, and many songs by Survivor are often sung on karaoke here. Before I married a Filipina grandmother and moved here, the only Survivor song I knew was "Eye Of The Tiger". What a great story.
I neither liked nor disliked Survivor. They were one of those bands that was just “there.” But man, watching this video and seeing how down to earth he is has turned me into a superfan! He’s still so enthusiastic and excited, like it happened just last year!
"I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before, and the man kept coming after you. Now we don't need no man like that in our lives. ."
This is such a great interview! As great as it is, my favorite part of the whole video is Jim saying that he is still Karen's vehicle after 47 years. Beautiful.
The one movie theme song that would even come close to "Eye of the Tiger" has to be Bob Seger's "Shakedown" from Beverly Hills Cop II. But, as much as I love that song, "Eye of Tiger" was the best. I remember being blown away that the song was perfect for the movie. I am still amazed at how these artists were able to do that; make a song that fits the movie perfectly.
Let's not forget how epic was/is Jim Peterik's song "Vehicle", with the band Ides of March. Powerful rhythm guitar opening, carrying the song to a satisfying climax in the chorus. MORE film producers should have left a message on Peterik's machine.
It was awesome! And yes, the little time change in the second riff in opening verses doing cymbal chokes is easy to screw up! 😆😆😆 The song always brings up vivid images in my mind of what I was doing then. I love playing it on my kit. And again, another reason why I play PAiSTe 2oo2 cymbals, as these are what you hear in this song. The Rocky movies were way cool too! Survivor is a fantastic band! And I like the second song they did in the next movie as well, very much! Cheers and Merry Christmas. 🎄
Then supernatural brought it to the newer generations. I snuck in to see survivor in concert about 25 years ago they were great. And the drummer was the nicest and coolest down to earth man I ever met.
I'm glad the multitalented Jim Peterik got to speak again about his amazing career. Actually, while I think "Eye Of The Tiger" is a good song, I think their first top 40 hit "Poor Man's Son" is an even better song, and their first Hot 100 hit "Somewhere In America" even better than that. But overall I think they were not getting worse or anything; they had many great pop rock gems in the late 80s, too.
Poll: What is your pick for the greatest movie theme, song, or score of the rock era?
Star Wars A New Hope
A Summer Place
Flash Gordon -- Queen
Doctor Zhivago
I'll nominate ... Any of the "Star Wars" themes (composed by John Williams).

Love the purple ensemble.
I'm Alright from Caddyshack is the greatest movoe song of all time imo. Don't know if it qualifies as an anthem or not, but it is to me!
Vital signs is one of my favorite albums ever. Not sure why none of those were number one.
Jensen Ackles in his Supernatural outtake is all of us when we hear this song.
Love that!
