    Some bike build videos try to make the process look like a surgical operation in a sterile environment with a neat wall of Park tools as the backdrop. This immersive masterpiece is more like watching medieval field surgery. Just bite down on this stick while I saw your leg off.

    I genuinely wonder what the ratio of destroyed crank arms is between greased tapers cracking cranks and dry tapers fusing to cranks and stripping out extractor threads.
    My personal experience is 0 to ~9 in favour of greased tapers never cracking versus cranks destroyed that have fused to BBs in various ways.

    • @fatrobdouble
      @fatrobdouble 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've always used a wee bit of grease, never been a problem for me. OTOH, as a guy who buys old used bikes for cheap, I've dealt with lots of issues where galvanic corrosion or whatever has froze aluminum cranks to steel spindles, and yeah.... some of those old cranks didn't make it.

    One thing I learnt building boats is that you should never use graphite pencil on aluminium. It causes a corrosion/ weak spot and you will never get it all off.

  • @wismar3630
    @wismar3630 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Greasing the spindle helps to alleviate creaks, or so I've been told. I was taught that anywhere metal contacts metal there should be a thin film of grease. For corrosion mitigation etc., but mostly as a noise cancelling tactic. I've been building and riding square taper for most of my life and I've never had a problem with 'pull-through' on a greased spindle, I feel like this problem is a function of over tightening, not lubricating. Love what you guys are doing!

  • @Bruisewillies
    @Bruisewillies ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you can tighten a square taper crank enough that you pull the spindle through the arm, then you really have no business working on bicycles.

    Best of the Best. Love it. Remember well the first Stumpjumper in early 80’s..came with Mafac brakes and I think TA chainset. I bought a Second Gen. in mid 80’s with Specialized Cranks and sealed bearing hubs. I think one piece bar/stem. Solid bike. Then had the first Stumpjumper in late 80’s to use Shimano XT.....Finally built a Stumpjumper S Works Disc Brake frame in early 2000’s with Hope brakes,hubs etc. so have a bit of history with Stumpjumpers! Now gone back to 853 Stanton Sherpa Steel. P.S. always fitted square taper cranks clean and dry.

Don't get me wrong, I love steel but I can't get over the fact that its heavy and became too snobby and too rich for my taste..
