Been using K&N's in all my cars and motorcycles since 1970's!! Great filters no re-buying just clean and re-use. In my 2013 after removing the charcoal filter it has a little bit deeper intake sound NOT real loud.
I might try this however what I'll do is probably buy a replacement Upper Case (46051FL010) that I'll modify then put the factory one back on if I need any warranty work on it (since I have just under 30,000 miles and wish to keep my warranty).
just checking back after your modification to see the inside of your air box beyond the k&n to see just how much grime got past. Ive always run k&n in all of my vehicles and i have one in my crosstrek right now. I have yet to cut out my carbon filter yet and would like to see the difference between the two of us. id love to help you on the next video and could send you pictures of my filter vs yours for future viewers... and science. i have another month before i clean my filter. hope to hear from you soon.
Not just more power. I also got better MPG after upgrading the filtering. I got 46+ MPG on a tank with my 2016 2.slo/CVT...with stock tires. Now I use tires 1“ taller. I can still get mid-high 30s hwy at 55-60MPH.
I have a 21 crosstrek sport with same tires now and it has the 2.5l, did you change just air filter or did you also cut out the carbon out of the box like video, please advise, thanks.
these filter are great on racing cars with high revs......seen a test of these filters (believe it was on youtube) and they do work, low to mid range revs it doesnt do much but at higher revs it makes a diffence. Like you compared running with a mask on, walking and jumping boulders no problem, 100 meters sprint with full power it will be harder to breathe
This was day 1 of being a Crosstrek owner. Literally. Went with spectre brand filter tho Mine is a 2022 premium base manual, and going up hills it saves me from dropping a gear after I switch back to paper while the spectre filter was drying out for a couple days
I have a 22 XV, but I don't have the same screen you got in the middle between the gauges, and I couldn't modify the middle screen to make it simple just like yours since I think it looks much better. Do you know how? I tried fiddling it in the settings but nothing came out unfortunately.
It looks like it's just the speedometer screen. You use the switches on the lower left side of the steering wheel to cycle through the different displays.
It's not part of routine maintenance. I can't imagine it gets that dirty though since there's the filter in front of it and most cars don't even have that. Do you still have your stock FR-S intake?
I’m still under warranty too? I only have a power train warranty so in theory wouldn’t modification of something not related to the power train not void the warranty
Couldn’t get all the adhesive off and wound up using a wire brush. What would happen if a small speck of plastic or adhesive debris were to be sucked up?
Nothing good.. I would suggest taking a razor blade and getting as much off as you can. If it won’t come off with all that effort, then it’s unlikely to come off on its own into the intake.
I’ve loaded my Kawasaki on this hitch at least 20 times this past year, it’s worked well. But then again my air cooled bike is only 215 lbs. my 280 lb Yamaha feels noticeably heavier when driving though
Which hitch do you have on the trek? I was worried about all the weight on the hitch if I put a full size bike on it. I’ve got a yz that looks similarly built to yours and then also a 250f. Would be nice to use the trek to haul them (one at a time obviously) without a trailer
I agree I’ve been an auto mechanic since 2013 and I just bought a cross trek and noticed this extra filter. I also noted a very acknowledgeable change in both throttle response and pickup after 3,000rpm. Before I felt like the power and was extremely linear. Maybe a Flow Bottleneck from the charcoal filter.
The charcoal filtre is designed for engine shut-off - preventing positive crank case fumes venting to atmospheric air and other hydrocarbon emissions escaping, back up through the intake track such as unburned fuel from port injection systems. It's an emission thing.
That carbon filter is part of the emissions control, so technically removing it makes the car non-compliant. Depending on the state inspection process - a small gamble. However, you should check out the dyno results and other details done if you really want to do this - th-cam.com/video/F1JmOKKAgyQ/w-d-xo.html - otherwise the K&N seems like a no-brainer.
Little bit more response down low and you could hear the induction noise, but you're not gonna feel a just a few HP. Maybe if you change the exhaust, manifold, tune, etc then you could physically feel a difference.
It does just fine with my 2022 KLX140RF, even for long road trips. I hauled my 2007 YZ250 with it a few times, but only for short trips (feels sluggish with my big bike and car packed with gear.)
I have a 5x8 trailer and 1 quad and 2 full size dirt bikes, pull it about 15 miles each way to our riding spot. Been doing it for about 5 years now and never had a problem. th-cam.com/users/shortscZB8oVU2Cn8?si=qxh2RK8skTCGoQPM
It might depending on if it is required in the visual inspection. If you wanted to, you could purchase another housing and have one that you put on for your tests that has the filter, and one for the rest of the year that doesn't have the filter.
subaru already has designed their air filters and intake for maximum efficiency learned that back in 2004 on a wrx i had. replacement air intakes are a waste of money.
My point exactly. Some people in the comments talk about how bad removing this is when it doesn’t even come from factory on older models or foreign models..
@@PatrickKasilag It actually looks 😅, I'm French and I don't have it on mine, there are a few pieces that are different, while mine is from 2016. But unfortunately it's extremely hard to find accessories here.. like all the LP Aventure parts, the lift kits, everything is complicated to get..

I removed the carbon filter. The airfilter is a dry, cotton, high-flow filter from DNA.
I also use 0W30 oil, with a quart of Duralube.

How many horses did you get out of it?
Would taking the charcoal filter off show up on emissions test?
No it will not. And the inspector should have no reason to open up your airbox to check for that

Here is the thing though, they let more air in but that includes particles. But I doubt that makes a difference in 5-6 years of ownership.
Right, and most cars didn't even have a charcoal filter in the airbox from factory anyway (for decades)

replacement air intakes are a waste of money.
Does it change the Intake sound? Would like to get a little more grunt without paying for a cold air intake or sub-performing cone filter. Ideas?
It's a very minimal change in sound, but yes it is a bit louder
If you want more sound, pull the resonator off the bottom of the intake box.
Don't waste $ on a CAI
