How does Pav do that...4:49 He is the master. And one can't find a better Requiem than this one, really. So much limpid beauty. Karajan looks like he's in a trance at times.
WOOOOOW. That was Fabuluosly Increadible. What an honor to be with this great singers and musicians. Just WOW. Masters and Master piece. How blessed those who were their to hear and watch them.
Breathtaking performance. The soloists of the highest quality assembled for this performance. Hard to imagine getting all these operatic superstars together and they sing so well together: no one grandstanding just perfect ensemble singing.
Four gorgeous artists in their prime. Verdi would have been delighted with their performance. Their focus on Karajan implies a great respect for him and fine attention to detail and focus on the music.
And to think Pavarotti was always nervous before he went on stage to sing, never considering himself the great master musician that he was. He sang every note to perfection because he never thought himself perfect & always practiced his voice to achieve what he thought in his mind was perfection. ❤a very down to earth human being with an incredible talent.
UN-believable talent in that room. Karajan looks possessed. An Pavarotti just chillin' singing his part -- second fiddle to Ghiaurov. Did he even know what he would become yet?
A masterpiece written by a master. Sung by four incredible singers. Conducted by someone who is deeply committed to the music and subject of that music. Just look at his facial expressions and nuanced movements. He is living that music. If only more of our young people would give this a listen. There is nothing more beautiful and expensive than the human voice properly trained and supported. I’m not a singer and not a musician. I’m just a listener for many years that has a deep respect and admiration for what these people can do. If you need a break from today’s world just sit down and listen to this. Thank you.
You have grasped in the depths of the meaning the true feeling that man expresses towards the Most High, the Lord God, through music and all art. May all men of good will listen to this music but above all listen to the Word of God and put it into practice.
An imperious Price and an altogether magnificent vocal quartet in a heart-rending performance of the Offertorium from Verdi's Requiem...I never heard it sung and played so movingly before, not ever.
The way Verdi encapsulates the very essence of supplication in the Hostias section at 4:50 is just sublime. How lucky are we to have the confluence of that beautiful music and this divine collection of artists to share it with us? A young Pavarotti singing this prayer with an effortless soft tenacity, one of the most sonorous basses in our history, a true golden age mezzo, and of course the unmatched perfection of La Price in her prime. Karajan was a visionary to bring these paragons together. Forever stanning this performance.
❤ Thank you, sir, for this recording. Not just that this is one of my favourite musical jewels, but also one of two of my favourite bass'...When Hostias starts, it is worth to leave everything aside, close one's eyes and just allow to be - the music. From all heart thank you! Kristijan, Cro
Saw them all do this at Expo 67 in Montreal - Price & Cossotto were sheer heaven, their Recordare always always makes me cry. The only change was the tenor was Bergonzi instead. ): But no problem - it was astounding and remains to this day the best I've ever seen. CBC recorded it but no longer have it - tch tch tch. So glad the dvd was finally released - obviously done a few months later. And Pavarotti - bless him...
Never realized before how much Pavarotti's voice resembled Bjoerling's until hearing this. Both were remarkable talents, and this must be the greatest performance of Verdi's Requiem ever.
I'm not a Verdi fan in particular, but this is amazing music. And...Price and Pavarotti and Ghiaurov on the same stage in 1-9-6-7. (Pavarotti looks like he's just out of high school). Just breathtaking!! (And...von Karajan conducts without a score...sheeesh!) This is just too much.
Price at 3:49 ... what I would give to sing ONE NOTE like that! This is a magnificent recording, four remarkable singers, Verdi at his absolute best. I can listen to it over and over.
I believe when I posted this I had the time wrong. I was referring of course to her first entrance, where she sustains and spins that tone as no one else ever has that I've heard. What a magnificent artist, and what a God-given, glorious sound.
Today it’s no longer possible to get together a quartet if singers of this calibre. Talking about resonance-they’re all out of this world, but I am particularly impressed by Ghaurov.💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
The piece is more of an opera than a sacred piece! Thats why it wasnt performed in churches regardless of the composers intentions.@@tamarakupchenko8230
The video quality, sound is quite incredible, upto todays quality, if not the color better for something not a film, filmed more than half a century ago!
This is really the best out there, all of the soloist are in the best of voices, and the conductor is brilliant. Next to the one Carl Reiner recorded and thats another brilliant conductor.
Simply the best voices, and how perfectly they are balanced to produced great ensemble singing. Just want to note another high point which occurs at the chord at 7:45. Leontyne Price executes a beautiful trill (so rarely done by sopranos in other performances of this piece) as the others hold the notes of the chord including the strong bass of Nicolai Ghiaurov. Flawless!
How can it get better than this? From conductor to soloists some of the best voices ever to sing on the opera stage, but somehow this was not good enough for some people. Pleas explain.
would anyone believe me? - i watched this 'Requiem' performance in its entirety on Moscow TV when i was 14. never mind the sound quality then - Leontyne Price made it irrelevant. i remember every bit of her part - strangely, it's only tonight that i have realized that one of the performers is Luciano Pavarotti (sorry, Mary, i've pasted in my msg to you - couldn't help it)
I believe you - times have changed. There used to be opera singers on US late night talk shows. Opera stars were household names. We were never a cultured nation, but had a few glorious moments. ✨🌙 🌹
I don't know what it is about the last 45 seconds of this that gets me. Closure. Such bittersweet closure. Something like that would go well with the closing scene of a well-directed love story, where the man proposes to the woman. She cries tears of happiness, cascading him in kisses and hugging him tightly. She softly whispers in his ear, "How could I say no." Cut to black, 'The End' on the final chord. Someone ought to make that happen. :)
This is a fantastic performance, but the camera direction is really inept. The cameras move around too much, show things at weird angles, stay on the orchestra when we want to see the singers/conductor, etc. It's also a bit weird that this was filmed without an audience...it's slightly depressing, looking out an empty concert hall.
Oh my god, Pavarotti is especially amazing here. This is a flawless recording all around
How does Pav do that...4:49
He is the master.
And one can't find a better Requiem than this one, really. So much limpid beauty. Karajan looks like he's in a trance at times.

This record I listened at St. Peters Square, Vatican. Unforgettable moment in my life!

Breathtaking performance. The soloists of the highest quality assembled for this performance. Hard to imagine getting all these operatic superstars together and they sing so well together: no one grandstanding just perfect ensemble singing.
Leontyne Price is in her 97th year. (Apr. '23) Video from '67.
This was magnificent.
Miss Price that control 2:37 is unmatched! #Legend!

Thats what you call a Dream Team. This recording will be preserved as a cultural heritage for many centuries

This. Ditto. 💯❤️
What a team
Wow! Pavarotti's mezza voce here is so meltingly beautiful!
Yes!!!
Yes! My 2nd favorite Verdi Requiem. I still prefer the Bjorling..Price ...Tozzi..and Elias with Reiner and Vienna (only because of Bjorling's Hostias)
This is Heaven!
An imperious Price and an altogether magnificent vocal quartet in a heart-rending performance of the Offertorium from Verdi's Requiem...I never heard it sung and played so movingly before, not ever.

Brings me to tears every time

4:50 indeed is fabulous but what about 5:39. 38-year old Nicolai with the most beautiful post-war basso. Two unique ever lasting voices.

Great music sung by terrific voices.
Terrific as in good?
@@alexj.denton7453 In this case, as in stupendous and earth-shattering.
Magnifique 😊
Esecuzione leggendaria! Quattro interpreti eccezionali !!!! Per non parlare di orchestra, e Direttore!!!!
8:08-9:09 could quite possibly be my favorite passage in all of Classical music. On a side note, Leontyne Price is absolutely sublime.
That chromatic harmony in that passage has always haunted me.
Price at 3:49 ... what I would give to sing ONE NOTE like that! This is a magnificent recording, four remarkable singers, Verdi at his absolute best. I can listen to it over and over.

I have this edition,on dvd.verdi "messa da requiem" price-pavarotti-cossotto-ghiaurov from deutsche grammophon-unitel.....absolutely awesome
Heavenly
Un'edizione capolavoro!
Pavarotti's resonance is so amazing
Incredible! Such beauty brings tears to my eyes. And Price?! Wow!! The Gods of singing came down to Earth....
In min 7:03 I almost cried.

Each of these performers is magnificent, but special kudos to Nikolai Ghiaurov 5:39 and, my goodness, Leontyne Price 2:37. Absolutely sublime.
The video quality, sound is quite incredible, upto todays quality, if not the color better for something not a film, filmed more than half a century ago!
Eccezionale!!!
jaason53, wherever you are, may God bless you for this - this... something beyond belief
Absolutely incredible
What an incredible performance of an incredible work!!
Karajan gets incredibly expressive singing from this extraordinary quartet of great voices.
Pavarotti unequalled. Probably never will be. RIP.
This is beautiful as it should be - Great performance by all involved - We always benefit from the effects of beauty.
The best Requiem interpretation .
Ah, there IS the Muti at LaScala.
I'm glad they included Fiorenza Cossotto - didn't know she was this great.
She is!
This will never be surpassed
Can you imagine just to open your mouth, inflate your lungs, that glorious sound??!!
Una vera meraviglia! Immenso Karajan e cantanti staordinari. Pavarotti, poi, un vero angelo

Fritz Reiner.

It's not his fault: Karajan loved himself some Karajan... LOVED it.
