Honestly I feel the biggest thing by far that holds TOTK back is how much it wants to copy BOTW in terms of gameplay but wants to disconnect with BOTW in terms of story.
Copying the shrines, temple order, story structure, combat, enemies, UI, items, and unlockables to be nearly identical from BOTW makes the game feel way less unique and fresh.
But at the same time, the game weirdly never wants to reference BOTW in the story at any cost.

I adore Breath of The Wild because it’s oh so obvious that you are playing in a world where the good guys lost. The world is overrun with monsters and the NPCs are coping with this destruction and fear in their own ways.
Breath of The Wild felt more personal because you were there experiencing that horror underneath the beauty of a post-apocalyptic world. Most games, after the end of the world, aren’t this beautiful. But you get to slowly uncover the deaths and stories of your friends, you get to help NPCs grow and change, you can watch as slowly but surely your actions create a more peaceful world. Link is the embodiment of hope after tragedy, and that really isn’t the case with Tears of the Kingdom, a world that has already been saved.

  • @eXimiusMax
    @eXimiusMax ปีที่แล้ว +402

20:59 This was one of my biggest gripes in the game and I’m so glad someone is finally bringing it up! Link is the main character, but he doesn’t have any character this time and just sits back as everyone else has the spotlight and I really don’t like it. The fact that this is the only game where he’s meant to explicitly be his own character to the point you can’t even name him this time, but then has less personality than almost all the other 3D Links that came before is mind-boggling! I was hoping we’d get to see more about him in this game since BotW didn’t deliver, but I guess not.

My biggest criticism of the story comes from me finding all the tears before completing a single dungeon. That one action completely and entire killed the stakes for me. Your telling me that im supposed to go off to find Zelda? I already know where she is. Why does nobody acknowledge that link knows EXACTLY what happened to zelda. Even if they had it so if you completed the memories the focus shifted to gathering the difrent tribes to tey and save zeld, but no. Where is Zelda? Shes not herself anymore

The thing is though, is even though you have those memories, there still is another 'Zelda' that you physically see wandering modern hyrule. Maybe Link is just as confused and trying to figure out what is going on, and finding this 'modern' Zelda is the key. Telling everyone else she died to become a giant dragon would just cause chaos in the kingdom.

I think my biggest problem with the story in TOTK is how the story already happened, and there's very little that Link himself actually does in it despite Zelda saying he is the one who will save everyone. All Link does in Totk is talk to people, kill a few monsters, and then take out Ganon, and it doesn't feel like he actually had an impact on the world. In Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker, Link has more responsibility and actually affects the course of the story and the lives of the people in the world. I think MM and TP did that part the best. In Botw, the fact that the story happened in the past was actually pretty cool because you could see the results of the Calamity on Hyrule. Many places are decimated, and you see the people slowly picking up the pieces and moving on, which helped drive home one of Botw's main themes: Moving forward and creating something new. The world in Totk doesn't have that same satisfying demonstration of cause-and-effect. Outside of the 4 major quests, the world feels more or less indifferent about what has happened, if they are even aware in the first place.

What we got was: Ganondorf fucks off at the beginning of the game and you don't see him again until the end of the game. The meat of the story happens in the past, with no influence on the world except "exposition dump"

I’m sorry but the world being indifferent to the upheaval and Link’s actions is entirely wrong and you must simply be misremembering the game. Ofc there are the obvious main 4 quests but outside of that the great fairies are disturbed and you have to rebuild a musical troupe in order to bring them back out. The korok forest is entirely zombified all the way down into the depths which you help heal. Pirates have taken over eventide and lurelin, the latter which you help physically rebuild which is rewarded with the villagers gratitude and special treatment. You help a group of warriors led by Hoz to take out large monster camps to bring peace to hyrule. All of the stable quests involve helping the locals and finding clues about Zelda’s whereabouts and actions, and it’s a nice mix up of the misdoings of puppet Zelda and the kind acts of the real Zelda aiding the people. You help with local town politics, the school, and the garden in Hateno village. You help Mattison and her parents during the buildup to her departure to Gerudo town which leads to one of the most heartfelt moments in the series. This is all off the top of my head there were plenty more like it throughout the game. Plenty of things to dislike ToTK for but I don’t think the world being indifferent is one of those reasons, it’s arguably one of the game’s best aspects.

Although the depths are not Auto-Generated, they weren't uniquely designed, all the terrain is just an inverse version of the surface. All the hills on the surface are valleys in the depths and vice versa, Even the lightroots are in the same places as the shrines from the surface. This is what gives the feeling of them being 'auto-generated'. Because the surface map was not designed with being flipped in mind, the depths feel weird to traverse and do not follow many game design principles. What I found annoying is that the tear number doesn’t coincide with the cutscene number. So tear #2 could be cutscene #6. And even when you _do_ follow the path the game pushes you towards (I think Wind > Fire > Lightning > Water dungeons), the tears along that trek still are random. You’d have to find a guide that actually tells you which tear is which cutscene to figure out what order it is to unlock them chronologically. But you’re not gonna do that on your first time and risk spoiling the story or other aspects, so you just experience a mess.
I didn’t find cutscene #1 until over 200 hours in. I thought it was done that way because it was some huge revelation to the story. Not really. You’re told you can both repair the Master Sword and strengthen it further. But given Ganon broke it already, something obviously had to give to win. And it’s not like knowing this beforehand would’ve ruined the surprise of Zelda becoming a dragon. That was already foreshadowed multiple times. I mean, when it was first mentioned to Zelda she didn’t even reject it as an option, and then turn around later. She never dismissed it as an option, just other people. So in the same scene it was mentioned it her lack of negative reaction basically foreshadowed “she’s obviously going to do it later”.

The problem too is that even if you are very story driven and go memory hunting immediately in botw, the game forces you to space it out with gameplay as you need to explore in order to find any of the landmarks in the pictures. And as exploration is the core of the game, you get a seamless and well-paced blend of story progression and game progression-explore a new area, find a new memory; it works.
But with totk, instead you get these massive geoglyphs that are just impossible to ignore, you can EASILY find most of them within the first few hours. And because people are like “oh look a shiny interesting thing that stands out golly” they’ll speed through the story in the first 10% of their total playtime which just feels…clunky from a pacing perspective alone.
From a story perspective, it’s just…terrible for all the reasons y’all already said.

Bingo! Nintendo shot themselves in the foot when they established that link will always have to fight Ganon in the next timeline which wasn't necessary.
Sadly when they do try to have a different story/antagonist they hardly have any idea what to do...
They also need to shake off the master sword requirement and a bunch of other stuff. It's getting really old! They could be telling fresh new original stories but they're not... It's essentially the same thing again and again and again. Find Zelda. Find the sword. Kill Ganon. Repeat.
Also they need to come back to their roots. Their games are turning into final fantasy and Zelda worlds are becoming way too much Japanese. The appeal of Zelda is its European medieval roots but when you make everything Chinese it kinda ruins everything. They might as well make a new game at that point and call it SAMURAIS!

22:01 I think Link's characterization works best when he has the same mindset as the player at the time. As seen in Scett's example, when Link about to storm the Forsaken Fortress for the first time and is waiting for Tetra's countdown to finish, the expressions on his face reflect the inner emotions of the player at the time as both mentally prepare for the fight ahead. Link in Wind Waker outwardly expresses what he's thinking in a way that not only makes him more of a character, but is more relatable to human emotion.
On the other hand, BoTW and ToTK don't have this same connection (imo). Also mentioned by Scart, Link is stone-faced 99% of the time - in the games where he could (and should) be expressing the most emotion he ever has in the series so far. I will say there are moments of personality that shine through like whenever Link cooks or when doing selfie poses, but the cooking cutscene gets boring very quickly and the selfie poses aren't very natural.
My issue is in the two games where he's supposed to be more than a glorified stand-in character, Link makes for the perfect stand-in for the player. We have more control than ever before as pick out our favorite gear and choose what dialogue to respond with as we make our own journey across Hyrule, and while it makes for rewarding gameplay, I find it hard to justify my mindset of exploring everything when Link is supposed to be saving Zelda - which breaks the immersion just enough to make the tedious parts of ToTK feel much more laborious than before. That or I'm sick of looking for these stupid Acorn guys all over the place.

I was really hoping that the story would keep me coming back for more in TotK but honestly it was just as frustrating as the rest of the game was for me. Not only does it seem shallow and has a lackadaisical plot but Zelda kinda just let everything happen. She went down deep in the chasms of Hyrule castle, saw murals of the past, took pictures, physically saw the mummified corpse who even mentioned Rauru's name, and when she gets transported back to the past and she doesn't say anything to the people who hold a resemblance to said murals? She can't put two and two together that Ganondorf is responsible for the Calamity? Especially when she sealed Calamity GANON for 100 years! I was so mad that when Sonia got killed then she wanted to warn Rauru? Umm too late for that pointdexter. I just... it blows my mind and I'm even more astonished that people are like not even aware of this and still claim the story is better in TotK. I think the reason I like TOTK's story more than BOTW is that the threat you're up against this time feels more....well, threatening. Calamity Ganon in the first game is certainly intended to be a huge world-ending threat, but the regional problems it caused felt more like mere nuisances half the time. In TOTK, all of the regions are really struggling with all the shit caused by the upheaval, and because of that I felt more invested in what was going on despite some of the story's quirks (like explaining the Imprisoning War in the same way 4 times, which I will agree is pretty silly). I even enjoyed the memories more in TOTK because, as silly of a reason as this might sound, Zelda's actually holding conversations with others most of the time. She technically is talking to Link in BOTW's memories, but Link barely ever reacts to anything she says in a noticeable way, so it felt like she was effectively monologuing to herself.
In short, I don't believe that the ideas brought forth in TOTK's story are any more interesting than BOTW's, I just think that the stakes here feel as high as they were meant to be this time around.

To me the best thing about Tears of the Kingdom's story (aside from the big twist and the events surrounding it) is how it has you interact with the communities of Hyrule so much more than any other game could dream of. It no longer feels like Link fighting for Hyrule with some help from its people; it feels like Link fighting alongside Hyrule's people. Breath of the Wild felt like it was trying to do something like this by having someone help you enter every Divine Beast, but now they just go all the way and have them not only join you in the Temples, but fight Ganondorf alongside you. I also love how in Lookout Landing and various camps, they make a point to show that everyone there has their own role and they're contributing to the conflict in any way they can.

    • @C_Arson

@@speedude0164 That's a good point. I just played Twilight Princess for the first time recently (which I liked a lot overall), and that game has a group of mercenaries that were trying to restore Hyrule alongside you, but their effect on the story is rather superfluous and mostly limited to pointing you in the direction of the next dungeon. In stark contrast to that, I really got the vibe that all of Hyrule's people were pitching in to help in Tears of the Kingdom, even if they weren't directly helping the player in any way. In Breath of the Wild, the various regions and their people felt rather separate from each other for the most part - likely because the kingdom had been in disarray for so long - so it was nice to see everyone banding together against the Demon King's forces to show that they've gotten past the wounds of the Great Calamity.

...I didn't know you couldn't leave the approach to Ganondorf, but I should have realized this. I noticed that I wasn't able to put down a travel medallion. Luckily I was over-prepared, but still. My main complaint about TOTK honestly is how useless the sages are in both gameplay and story. They were great in their respective temples, but outside of that? Maybe if their abilities were on the rune wheel, but it just wasn't worth it for me to walk to up most of them to do a small attack. Tulin is the main exception as he's a fantastic mobility tool. Sidon is a special case in that he's useful for the Zora spear, and...that's it. If I want explosions, I have bomb flowers. If I want a lightning blast, I have shock fruit and yellow chu chu jelly. If I want to slowly walk around and use Zonai devices? I don't, but I could fuse them to my shield. And then the sages' powers are just...unavailable during the finale at all. Their avatars disappear, and while they do show up to help take out some trash mobs and distract the temple bosses...that's basically it? First phase Ganondorf they're not there, second phase they're only there for part of it and then they get knocked the fuck out for the rest of the finale. So....what did they do? Why did Link need their help?

This is because the game is offering a lot of linearity in the beginning quest sections.
The game can still be done in a myriad of ways and you can take whatever path you want, but if you want story in particular then the game gives advice and pin points you towards certain areas to do first. This is also why the game suggests you do Rito village first a lot as on your way to Rito village is the quest that "officially" starts your hunt for the dragon tears which would then lead you to the chamber that had all of those tears in order.

    • @aprofondir

The fuse UI is actually insane, I don’t know how it met Nintendo’s standards when they were doing play testing for game feel. I like that you have to craft things in real-time, but a real-time crafting menu that you had to navigate during gameplay would have accomplished the same goals, and would have made it infinitely quicker and more efficient to make weapons and shields. And arrows, my god, this was the dumbest implementation they could have thought of. Why can’t I just craft arrows in anticipation of a fight like I do with my weapons and shields? Maybe then you could have a limited number of different fused-arrow slots that you could upgrade using Korok seeds. Or hell, just the ability to pin five or six materials instead of having to have it be sorted by “Most Used” would have made me feel way more in control of my experience. I love the idea of the fuse mechanic, but it’s implementation is just needlessly cumbersome.

It really ought to be flipped, but as it stands jts very easy for players to not get autobuild for 100 hours, not get the sticky suit until its too late to be of any use, not get the fairy upgrades until deep into the game long after it was needed, but hey, at least the player can spend hours and hours roaming the barren underground where there's not much to see except copy pasted enemy camps and yiga hideouts.
